Sammy Stamey, age 69, of Hayesville, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2016 in Union General Hospital. He was a native and lifetime resident of Hayesville. He had served in the United States Army in Vietnam. Sammy worked as an engineer for several large communications companies. He installed fiber optic line in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and many areas around the country. Sammy enjoyed working on his farm and raising beef cattle. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He attended North Mount Zion Church of God. He was a member of the VFW Post 6812 (Allison Bristol) and Disabled American Veterans.

He was the son of Elveta Rowland Stamey of Hayesville and the late Ray C. Stamey.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Patricia Stamey; a daughter, Kate Scroggs and husband, Jay of Hayesville; a son, Glenn Scroggs of Hayesville; three sisters, Carole Scroggs of Jonesborough, Tennessee, Dot Law and husband, Steve of Nashville, Tennessee, and Lynn Padgett of Hayesville; two brothers, Clarence Stamey and wife, Faye of Castle Rock, Washington and Edward Stamey and wife, Pauline of Suches, Georgia; four grandchildren, Rylan, Reagan, Addison, and Stella; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Rev. Rayburn Wilson and Rev. Edward Stamey officiating. Military rites will be provided by Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison Bristol), American Legion Post 532, Murphy American Legion Post 96, VFW Post 10222, and the North Carolina National Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be Marty and Brent Scroggs, Sammy Lee Stamey, Jeff Padgett, Richie Parker, and Zack Cook.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:45 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
