Cherokee County School Board to Update Policies in August 2017

CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C.- Cherokee County School Boards upcoming meeting on August 10th, 2017 policies to be reviewed: 3410 Testing and Assessment Program, 3470/4305 Alternative Learning Programs, 5008 Automated Phone and Text Messaging, 5030 Community Use of Facilities, 6320 Use of Student Transportation services, 6450 Purchase of Services, and 7930 Professional Employees: Demotion and Dismissal.

Proposed changes to Policy 3410 on Testing and Assessment Program include clarifying the standard for exempting students from CTE Post-Assessments, adding to the list of permissible exceptions to the testing window to be consistent with the DPI testing handbook, updating the SBE policy cited in the legal references, and adding the DPI testing handbook to the list of “other” references.

Proposed changes to Policy 3470/4305 on Alternative Learning Programs/Schools include revising provisions for the involuntary assignment of students to alternative programs/schools to better align with procedures established by the SBE. The revisions address: the role of the multidisciplinary team in making assignment decisions, the process for assigning and transitioning students with disabilities, and the appeals process.

Changes proposed to Policy 5008 on Automated Phone and Text Messaging, and Policy 5030 Community Use of Facilities were not available online. They seem to be new or unchanged. Will follow up on this, and will keep you posted.

Updates to Policy 6320 Use of Student Transportation Services include clarifying the appropriate use of school buses in Sections A and B and updating terminology, policy cites, and hyperlinks. One new footnote was added as well.

Policy 6450 on Purchase of Services was updated to add a provision to clarify that this policy does not apply to certain professional services contracts, which are instead subject to Board Policy 9110.

Updates to Policy 7930 on Professional Employees: Demotion and Dismissal include adding a statement of performance standards and other expectations for professional employees and updating the cross references.

These policy updates will be in review for the 2nd reading at the next Cherokee County School Board meeting to be held on August 10th, 2017 at 6:00p.m.
