MURPHY, N.C.-  The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners (BOC) discussed the potential purchase of three 72-passenger activity buses that were pending approval of the commissioners and approved a notice of intent to lease the Hiwassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center at their Monday, Nov. 20, meeting.

At the Nov. 9, 2017, Cherokee County Board of Education (BOE) meeting, a budget amendment was approved by the BOE to use the half-cent sales tax fund in the amount of $270,000 to purchase the activity buses. The BOE needed the final approval from the commissioners for these activity buses, and on Monday, the commissioners granted the approval for the activity buses without hesitation.

Also, the commissioners unanimously approved a notice of intent to lease the Hiwassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center to a private owner at their meeting. This notice will be available for at least 30 days.

The terms and conditions that the commissioners instructed the county attorney to add in the lease were made available to the public on Wednesday. Copies of the proposed lease along with the notice of intent to lease is available at the county’s website.

The board met in closed session Monday night to secure the terms and conditions of the notice of intent with County Manager Scott Lindsay. When the board returned from closed session, there was no mention of who would lease the wellness center.

The county intends to lease the property to the wellness center to a private individual. The wellness center would stay as is. The lease is for a term of two years, with the option to renew the lease for one additional term of two years. Hiwassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center LLC will pay the county an annual rent of $6,000 for year one and $8,500 for the second year.

All persons interested in this lease are invited to attend the meeting of the Board of County Commissioners to be held in the Cherokee County Courthouse, Multipurpose Room 342, 75 Peachtree Street, Murphy, N.C.,  Tuesday, Jan 2, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. At that time, the board intends to authorize the lease of the property described above.
