Mr. Dennis Ray “Denny” Woody: Obituary

Dennis Ray “Denny” Woody, 61, of Hayesville died Thursday, October 6, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a yearlong battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He was a native of Macon County, but grew up in Clay County and lived in Georgia for 13 years before moving back to Clay County in 1989. Denny was a tool & die maker with Wither Tool & Die in Atlanta. In 1981, he founded Clint Woody Southern Company, which is also in Atlanta. After returning to Clay County, he ran a Pepsi-Cola route in Hiawassee, Georgia. In 1996, Denny became a partner in Hayesville Hardware. He then started his own business, Smoky Mountain Manufacturing Stone. Later, Denny worked as a tool & die maker for Moog. He was a member of the Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville, Georgia.

He was the son of Clarence and Joann Hogsed Woody of Hayesville. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mattie Jo Woody.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 39 years, Leslie Anne Moore Woody; two daughters, Stacy Woody and Megan Woody, both of the home; five sons, Clint Woody and wife, Susan of Savannah, Georgia, Reid Woody and wife, Shandalee of Brasstown, Clay Woody and wife, Lauren of Blacksburg, Virginia, Chad Woody and wife, Erin of Hayesville, and Joseph Woody of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three sisters, Debbie Patterson and husband, Wade of Roswell, Georgia, and Clara Reffit and husband, Gary, and Vickie Benson and husband, Wade, all of Hayesville; and ten grandchildren.

A funeral mass was held at 11:00 AM Monday, October 10, 2016 in the Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Blairsville, Georgia with Father Juan Areiza and Father Richard Wise officiating. The interment was in Eagle Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Clint, Reid, Clay, Chad, and Joseph Woody, and John Taylor Baker.

The family received friends from 6-8 Sunday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Dennis Ray “Denny” Woody to the ALS Association, NC Chapter Catfish Hunter, 4 North Blount Street, Suite 200, Raleigh, NC 27601.

Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville in charge of all arrangements.
