Gene Griggs, 87, of Marble passed away Thursday, January 2, 2020 in a Robbinsville care facility. He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County. Gene was employed with Baker Furniture, retiring in 1997 after 31 years. Gene coached little league baseball in Cherokee County for many years. He was a member of Marble Springs Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and served as a deacon. Gene enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
He was the son of the late Ulysses Grant and Emma Jane Crisp Griggs and the husband of the late Lois Ann Raxter Griggs, who died February 22, 2010. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Colt Griggs; two sisters, Frances Carroll and Pearl Griggs; and three brothers, Marcell, Vincent, and Porter Griggs.
Surviving are a son, Donny Griggs and wife, April of Andrews; two sisters, Mae Coffey and Linda Parsons, both of Gastonia, North Carolina; three brothers, Charles Griggs of High Point, North Carolina, Junior Griggs of Gastonia, and Robert Griggs of Murphy; two granddaughters, Allie Griggs and fiancé, Jordon Mathis, and Erika Griggs, all of Andrews; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2020 in Marble Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Bernie Dixon and John Bailey officiating. The interment will be in Moss Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Howard Coffey, Dick Brown, Mike Erwin, Mike Hunsucker, Danny Crooke, and Jeff Rowland.
The family will receive friends from 10-11:45 Saturday morning at the Marble Springs Baptist Church prior to the services.
