Bryson City, NC- The Murphy Bulldogs traveled to Bryson City to take on the Swain County Maroon Devils in their first Smoky Mountain Conference matchup of their young season. A 3 runs sixth inning allowed Swain to take the victory, 4-3.
Charlie Collins was on the mound for Swain County, and lasted six innings while allowing six hits and three runs. Collins also struck out 10 Bulldog batters.
Cole Laney started the game for Murphy, allowing five hits ad four runs over five and a third innings while striking out eight. Briggs Cornwell came on in relief for the Dogs.
Murphy jumped out to an early lead on the Maroon Devils, thanks to a Briggs Cornwell double in the first inning that scored Will Carringer. Isaac Cole would then go on to score Cornwell on a double in the same inning.
In the top of the third, Cornwell added to his RBI total driving in Brayden Rumfelt and giving his team a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, thats where the runs would stop for the Bulldogs.
Swain would finally get on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to a Gabe Lillard sac fly, but the big inning for the Devils was in the sixth. Senior Will Jenkins was the hero for Swain County, knocking a two run single to left that scored Carter Hayes and Carson Taylor.
Swain and Murphy will line it up again this Friday 3/18, this time with Murphy hosting.
