Bulldogs Look for a Win Going into the Bye Week Before Starting Conference Play
By Brandon Stephens
(Asheville) – – Tonight’s game will be the third meeting between Murphy (2-and-1) and the A-C Reynolds Rockets (1-and-2), according to football records. Murphy leads the series 2-0. The Rockets have been a traditionally tough team with a large student body to suit up dedicated offensive and dedicated defensive squads.
A-C Reynolds is not having the best start to its season. Surprisingly, the Rockets dropped its first game to Brevard 31-to-7 and its last game to Jay M. Robinson 49-to-21. The one win was close against Maiden 27-to-26. There is also hope Junior transfer quarterback Avery Hollifield will produce the magic he did last season at Asheville Christian Academy. There Hollifield passed for 2,299 yards in six games. This season Hollifield has completed 5 of 12 passes for 45 yards and an interception. More snaps have been going to Junior quarterback Kolton Rymer, who has completed 24 of 37 passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Passing is the name of the game for A-C Reynolds. The rockets may use as many as eight different receivers, including running backs for a slip or bubble screen. The pass has been the key to helping move the offense in tricky ways. Watch for Kolton Rymer to line up for a pass, where he has caught 22 passes for 120 yards. Senior running back Kayden Ray leads the team in pass yards with 158 on 9 receptions.
Rocket rushing and depended greatly on Senior running back Tyvon Patterson-Davis, who has carried 28 times for 148 yards. The remainder of the 375 yards rushing has come from a combination of quarterback keepers with Hollifield and Rymer or Kayden Ray and Jayden Smith, all of whom have less than 60 yards of rushing yards at this point in the season.
The Murphy Bulldogs appear to be ready after a steady week of good work in practice and the momentum coming off a 42-to-6 win over East Surry. Murphy racked up 349 yards of offense and scored 6 touchdowns. Senior quarterback Brady Grant explains how the East Surry game has made impact to the team and his view of A-C Reynolds.
Coaching through a good win over East Surry and prepping for the last non-conference game of the season is a good time for Murphy Head Football Coach Joseph Watson. Getting past the open date and carrying all good momentum is always a challenge says Coach Watson.
Tonight’s game at A-C Reynolds will kick off at 7:30 PM. Stay connected to Team FYN Sports through the Facebook for game updates. Data and stats in this article are from Maxpreps and from Murphy football records.
