Cherokee County Schools Finance Director Resigns as District Continues Superintendent Search

Murphy, N.C. — Leadership changes are on the horizon for Cherokee County Schools, as officials confirmed that the district’s finance director will step down in October while the search for a new superintendent remains underway.

The school board announced this week that the finance director’s last day will be October 10, 2025. The district has not yet named an interim replacement or a permanent successor. The finance director oversees the system’s budget, financial reporting, and coordination with state and county funding sources.

The departure comes at a pivotal time. The school board is already in the midst of hiring a new superintendent following the retirement of Dr. Jeana Conley earlier this year. Applications for the position remain open, and board members say interviews are expected in the coming weeks.

School officials emphasized that continuity of leadership in both finance and administration will be crucial as Cherokee County Schools prepares for upcoming budget cycles and works to address needs ranging from teacher recruitment to facility improvements.

Community members are watching closely. During recent board meetings, parents and staff have urged transparency in the superintendent selection process and called for stable leadership to guide the district through a period of transition.

The Cherokee County School District serves approximately 3,000 students across Murphy, Andrews, and the surrounding area.

The board has not released details on whether an internal candidate may step into the finance role or if the district plans to conduct a broader search.
