Smoky Mountain Conference race heating up as stars lead the way
The Smoky Mountain Conference season is starting to take shape, and as the standings begin to settle in, it’s clear a few familiar names are leading the charge.
At the top of the standings sits Andrews, and the Wildcats have earned that spot with strong play across the board. A big part of that success has come from Drew Dartez, who has been as steady as they come at the plate. Dartez is hitting .523 on the season and has driven in 21 runs, consistently coming through in big moments for the Wildcats.
On the mound, Andrews has leaned on Ethan Sutton, who has struck out 48 batters so far this year. Sutton has given the Wildcats a dependable arm they can turn to, especially in key games. Add in Tanner Postell, who has swiped 19 bases and created havoc on the basepaths, and Andrews has found a way to win with a mix of power, pitching, and speed.
Hayesville is right behind in the standings, and much of their success can be traced to the arm of Jackson Sellers. Sellers has been tough on opposing hitters all season, posting a 0.58 ERA and keeping the Yellow Jackets in just about every game he’s taken the mound.
Robbinsville sits in third place and continues to do what it does best by putting runners on base and applying pressure. Benton Gibby has led the way with a .667 on-base percentage, finding ways to get on and set the table for the Black Knights offense.
Murphy, Swain County, Rosman, Cherokee, and Hiwassee Dam round out the rest of the conference standings as teams continue to battle for position heading into the final stretch of the season.
With Andrews setting the pace and Hayesville and Robbinsville close behind, the race is far from over. There is still plenty of baseball left to be played, and in a conference like this, things can change in a hurry. But for now, it is the Wildcats who hold the edge, backed by some of the top individual performances in the Smoky Mountain Conference.
