Mr. James L. “Fatie” Chapman: Obituary

James L. “Fatie” Chapman, age 85, of Hiwassee Dam Community, Murphy, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016 at a Murphy care facility. He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. Fatie was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army. He had worked as a water treatment operator with Tennessee Copper Company. He was a member of the Copper Hill Masonic Lodge No. 656 and he was a Scottish Rite and Shriner. Fatie was also a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

He was the son of the late Theodore W. and Sarah Athalina Mashburn Chapman and the husband of the late Alma Ruth Owens Chapman, who died December 28, 2002. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bynum B. Chapman.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy Ann Verner of Murphy, and Brenda Chapman Zimmerman and husband, Eddie of Connelly Springs, North Carolina; a sister, Faye Chapman-Green and husband, Tom of Ducktown, Tennessee; three brothers, T.W. Chapman and wife, Donna of Atlanta, Georgia, Ivan Chapman and wife, Sherry of Murphy, and Eugene Chapman and wife, Stella of Ducktown, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Larry K. Verner, Rev. Tai Zimmerman Cole, and Andrew Davis Zimmerman; and three great grandchildren, Olivia Morgan Verner, John E. Magette, and Owen M. Magette.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 9, 2016 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Revs. Jerry Morrow and Kevin Chapman officiating. The interment will be in Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery with masonic graveside rites conducted by the Copper Hill Masonic Lodge No. 656. Pallbearers will be Olivia Verner, Henry Raper, Larry Verner, Ray Hamby, Scott Ledford, and Gary Kilpatrick.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 Wednesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of James L. “Fatie” Chapman to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy in charge of all arrangements.
