Alan S. Peters, age 74, of Murphy, died Friday, July 1, 2016 in an Atlanta, Georgia hospital. He was a native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, had lived in Sandusky, Ohio and Macon, Georgia, but moved to Cherokee County in 2001. Alan taught English in his early years and then worked for Combined Insurance for thirty years, and while in Macon, Georgia, he taught physically impaired children. Alan was president and board member of the Sharing Center and was a member of the Shepherd of the Mountains Church.

He was the son of the late Robert F. R. and Mary Caris Peters. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Peters and Greg Peters.

Surviving are his wife of twenty-five years, Kittie Cox Peters; a son, Arlan P. Peters and wife, Allison Moy of Durham, North Carolina; a step daughter, Kelly Dare and husband, William of Macon, Georgia; two step sons, Timothy O’Hara Grant and wife, Erika of Jackson, Georgia and Thomas Carey Grant and wife, Kay of Macon, Georgia; a brother, Robert F. R. Peters, Jr. and wife, Ginny of Alexandria, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Kathy Peters of Eugene, Oregon; five step grandchildren; and one step great granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2016 in the Shepherd of the Mountains Church with Rev. Al Beck officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:30-1:50 p.m. Thursday at the Shepherd of the Mountains Church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, family request friends to bring food items to be placed around the altar in memory of Alan S. Peters for the food pantry and/or donations to the Development Fund at Shepherd of the Mountains Church, PO Box 1136, Murphy, NC 28906.
