Kathryn Ann Stevens, age 60, of Pendergrass, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center – Braselton.

Kathryn was born August 22, 1959 to the late Frank and Margarett “Susie” Calhoun in Murphy, North Carolina.  She was a purchasing analyst for Kubota Manufacturing for 13 years.  She loved pandas, bells, boating, and riding her motorcycle.  She enjoyed camping for many years and was an avid clogger in her younger years.  She and Greg enjoyed gardening and kept all the neighbors and friends fed from their garden.  She and Greg participated in a lot of car shows over the years, showing a 2001 bright yellow Corvette.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Greg Stevens of Pendergrass; dogs, Skipper and Harley; brother, David Calhoun of Cartersville, Georgia; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Carl and Edith Stevens; sister-in-law, Carla Stevens of Norcross, Georgia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vickie and Sam Hinegardner of Woodstock, Georgia; and nephews, Alex and Ryan Hinegardner.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Pavilion in Memorial Park South Cemetery in Flowery Branch, Georgia.  The family will receive friends following the service.

An inurnment will be held Saturday, September 21, 2019 in Sunset Cemetery.

Juanita Bryson, age 86 of Murphy passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019. She was the daughter of the late James and Lillie Beaver. Juanita was of the baptist faith. She loved her flower garden, doing crafts, and shopping at thrift stores.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Hoyt Beaver and Howard Beaver; half brother, Lester Brannon; sister, Margie Morrow and half sister, Amilee Brannon.

She is survived by her brothers, Charles Beaver, Austin Beaver, Melvin Beaver and wife, Shirley; sisters, Linda Patterson and Opal Chambers and husband, Jr. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2pm, Thursday September 19, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Nathan Rose will officiate. Pallbearers will be nephews. Burial will be in Unaka Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ricky E. Crawford, 67, of Murphy passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at his residence. He was a native of Jackson County, Georgia. Ricky lived in Athens, Georgia for more than 20 years while working for Bridges Funeral Home. He then moved to the area in 1996, where he worked for Ivie Funeral Home for more than 20 years. He was a member of Tomotla Baptist Church, where he enjoyed playing the bass guitar. Ricky enjoyed building model cars, collecting old cameras, and especially photography.

He was the son of Mattie Crawford of Athens, Georgia and the late Howard Crawford. He was also preceded in death by a son, Avery Crawford.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 44 years, Debra Crawford; two sons, Emery Crawford of Murphy and Aaron Crawford and wife, Rei of Berea, Kentucky; a sister, Marsha Waters and husband, Tommy of Athens, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Tomotla Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Stiles officiating.

Lorraine B. Stiff, 94, of Murphy passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at her residence.

Frederick Leroy Foland, age 78 of Hayesville, NC passed away Sunday, July 14, 2019 at his residence.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio to the late Frederick O. and Lula Mae Roberts Foland. He was an Army veteran. He was a long time meat manager at Kroger while he lived in Ohio and at Publix while living in Florida. He loved fast cars, loved to grill, and loved to joke.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 35 years, Marjorie Foland, who he greatly missed; and his sister, Georgia Ann Parsons.

He is survived by his two sisters, Sharon Lee Smith and Barbara Ellen Foland; special nieces, Ashley Nishimura and husband Toshiya, Taylor Burns and husband Ty, and Tami Baughman and husband Buzz; and many other nieces and nephews.

Travis Gene McGrady, age 41 of Murphy, NC passed away Friday, July 12, 2019 at his residence.

He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County, NC and the son of the late Robert and Linda McGrady.

He is survived by his companion, Athena Cook of 13 years; one son, Robert Helton; one stepson; four daughters; three brothers, Mickey, Jason, and Shawn McGrady; one sister, Robin Whitener; and many beloved family members and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 6 on Tuesday, July 16 at Little Brasstown Baptist Church. The Memorial Service will be held at 6:00pm. Rev. Aud Brown will officiate.

Vernon Howard, age 69 of Marble passed away Monday September 9, 2019 in Chattanooga, TN.

Vernon was the son of the late Greely Howard and Joyce Wiggins Howard. He enjoyed fishing and loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He worked for Mayfield Milk for many years and was known as “The Milkman”. He was an US Army Veteran. Vernon loved the Lord and was a member of Tomotla Baptist Church where he was a deacon, and choir director.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ella Howard; daughter, Vicki Olive and husband Brad; sons, David Howard and Richard Howard and wife, Ashley; grandchildren, Sara Hardy, Christian Olive, Tori Olive, Lily Howard, Molly Howard and Serenity “Pickle” Howard; brothers, Ed Howard and wife, Jan and sisters, Sheila Morris and husband,  Bobby and Gladys Waldroup and husband, Nathan.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday September 12, 2019 at Tomotla Baptist Church. Rev. Doug Howard and Rev. Harold Stiles will officiate. Joyce Allen, 87, of Murphy passed away Sunday, July 14, 2019 in a Murphy care facility. She was a native of Lexington, Kentucky, where she worked for Community Bank for 29 years before moving to Florida. She then worked at Bank of America for 14 years before retiring to Murphy in 1995. Joyce was a dedicated animal lover and supported local animal rescue organizations and also rescued many animals herself. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed cooking.

She was the daughter of the late George Lyman and Evelyn Harper Alcorn and the wife of the late Howard Ulma Allen, who died July 31, 2001.

Surviving are a brother, Gehrig A. Alcorn and wife, Robyn of Colorado; and several special nieces and nephews.

Carol Ann Day, age 74 of Murphy passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at her residence. She was born in Staten Island to the late Michael and Anna Tristaino Fava. Carol was a member of Ranger Baptist Church and a former member of Eastern Star of Martha’s Chapter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,Jimmy Lee Day.

Carol is survived by her sons, Victor Marrone and Kevin Michael Flachofsky; daughter, Theresa Ann Marrone; grandchildren, Jennifer Mikulo, Chase Keiser, Shawn Marrone and Smantha Blahnik and great-grandchildren, Clark Anne Blahnik, Alyasa Mikula, Hunter Keiser and Zayne.

Ralph Jackson “Jack” Wood Jr., 67, of Marble passed away Monday, July 15, 2019 at his residence. He was a native of Nantahala, where he had lived most of his life. Jack worked in tunnel construction for W.L. Hailey & Company. He later went on to become a machinist with OMC.

He was the son of the late Ralph Jackson Sr. and Evelyn Morgan Wood and the husband of the late Mary Plumer Wood. He was also preceded in death by a son, Daniel Jeremy Wood, who died March 10, 2006.

Surviving are a son, Jason K. Wood and wife, Christy of Nantahala; and a brother, Bart Wood and wife, Lora of Nantahala.

Joel Keith Creasman, 78, of Andrews, NC, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2019. He was born January 7, 1941 to the late Alvin Eugene Creasman and Mildred Russell Creasman. Mr. Creasman retired from Western Forge a furniture manufacturing business. He loved football, baseball and basketball games and he loved to garden and read. He was a member of Aquone Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, also a Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara Creasman; two sons, Brian Keith Creasman (Valerie) of Kentucky and Joel Creasman (Nichole) of Andrews, NC; grandchildren, Jeremiah, Kenzie, Isabella, Micaiah, Hilkiah, Georgia, and Hannah Creasman; a sister, Erla Jean Jones of Andrews, NC.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, September 6, 2019 at Aquone Baptist Church in Topton, NC, with Rev. Joel Creasman and Rev. Michael Grant officiating. Addison Matthew Wareham, 92, of Placida, Florida passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at Venice Regional Bayfront Health.

He was born on March 2, 1927 in Lake Linden, Michigan.

Mr. Wareham served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion.

He was known as “Mr. Fix-It” and could design anything as well, including a two-story home in the mountains of North Carolina. He had a special ability to make people laugh. Singing in the Church Choir and in a mixed chorus known as ENCORE were favorite activities.

He was ultra conservative, yet he contributed anonymously to many philanthropic causes.

He was the son of the late Raymond and Esther Wareham. He was also preceded in death by a son, Greg.

He is survived by his partner of 9+ years, Virginia “Toni” D. Samsel; his daughter, Marcia Stockard; and three grandchildren.

Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2019 in the Rowland Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Marble.

Curtis Melvin Chambers of Atlanta passed away peacefully on September 4, 2019. He was 86.

Curtis was born in Birdie, Georgia on July 16, 1933 to the late James “Corbett” Chambers and Sallie Barrow Chambers. He was the eldest of six children, and a character guided by his entrepreneurial spirit throughout his life.

Curtis was raised in Mobile, Alabama, and was known in his community as a young entrepreneur who sold ice and candy, and delivered newspapers, groceries, and auto parts. Curtis was also known as an entertainer, regularly playing guitar and singing at his high school, and hosting his own radio show in Mobile. Curtis’s school principal once told him “You need to give up that hillbilly music, there’s no future in it.” That same principal also chased Elvis Presley off his high school stage for inappropriate moves.

In 1952, Curtis joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska during the Korean War.  He served 4 years on aerial reconnaissance flights gathering intelligence from the Soviet Union, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and the Good Conduct Medal.

After completing his service, Curtis arrived in Atlanta in 1956, and began working at Lockheed Corporation. Curtis often played the guitar at social gatherings in the city. Curtis met a red-headed woman while playing guitar at a house party in Atlanta. When she asked him why he came to the party, he replied “I’m looking for me a wife.” The rest is history.

Curtis married Madelyn Gibson in April, 1957, and welcomed their first son, Jeff, later that year. Sons Greg and Ron were born in 1960 and 1968, respectively.

Curtis opened Chambers Service Station in southwest Atlanta on December 26, 1957, becoming a Pure Oil dealer, and later a Union 76 dealer. Curtis expanded his business to include lawnmower repairs as a Snapper dealer, and became one of Atlanta’s first video rental businesses. Curtis’s customers included many prominent Atlantans in the 1960s and 1970s, including Hank Aaron, Dr. Joseph Lowery, United States Ambassador Andrew Young, and Martin Luther King Sr.

Curtis became a grandfather in 1992 and spent the next two and a half decades adoring his five “ugly bunch of grandkids.”

Curtis’s jovial presence could be felt in any room. If you’ve met him, there’s a good chance you counted the ‘Fs’ on the back of a Chambers Service Station business card, saw a picture of his “Pride and Joy,” and heard a story about one of his 15+ trips to Walt Disney World.

Curtis’s other accomplishments include evading formal healthcare for more than 40 years, representing himself in county court twice, ending a high-speed police chase by shooting out the tires of the suspect’s car as it drove by his business, and maintaining the only rotating commercial sign in Fulton County after 1988.

Curtis is preceded in death by his parents Corbett Chambers and Sallie Chambers; sisters Betty Chambers and Jean Cochran; and sons Greg Chambers and Ron Chambers. He is survived by his wife Madelyn Chambers of Atlanta, Georgia; son Jeff (Shari) Chambers of Acworth, Georgia; daughters-in-law  Nancy Chambers of Newnan, Georgia, and Melissa (Brian) Carlson of Auburn, Alabama; grandchildren Sarah Chambers of New York, New York, Kathryn (Nathan) Bohannon of Suwannee, Georgia, Kellen Chambers of Atlanta, Georgia, Paxson Chambers of Tallahassee, Florida, and Caraline Carlson of Auburn, Alabama; and sisters Barbara Coogler of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Gail Roberts of Saraland, Alabama, and Peggy (Ben) Adams of Mobile, Alabama.

Henry Herr, 91, of Murphy passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2019 in a Murphy care facility. He was a native of Baltimore, Maryland and lived in Murphy since 2012. Henry was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Army. He worked for General Motors for 43 years. Henry was a member of the United Automobile Workers Local 239 in Baltimore and the Saint William Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and loved to work with his sons.

He was the son of the late Henry George and Alma Dahlen Herr and the husband of the late Angela Regina Wagner Herr, who died April 17, 2014. He was also preceded in death by a step-sister, Angela Modeski; and two step-brothers, Thomas and Ronnie Privette.

Surviving are two sons, Henry J. Herr and wife, Kathleen of Baltimore, Maryland and Randal Herr and wife, Kimberly of Murphy; a brother, Charles Herr and wife, Helen of Baltimore County, Maryland; a step-sister-in-law, Delores Privette; and five grandchildren, Cindi Herr, Jason Herr, Matthew Herr and wife, Hannah, Kathren “Katie” McClafferty and husband, Shane, and Henry C. Herr and wife, Jessica.

The inurnment will be held at a later date at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery in Maryland.
