Marlene Morrow

Marlene Morrow, age 88 of Murphy passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Murphy Rehab and Nursing. She was the daughter of the late Issac Abraham Russell and Maude Ann Downey Russell. Marlene was a member of Second Baptist Church of Murphy and a member of the Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Morrow; nine brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by her son, Ray Morrow; daughters, Ealane Cole and husband Sonny, Wanda Scroggs and Sheila Walls and husband Larry; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Calvin Murphy and Rev. Jerry Morrow will officiate. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Kane Walls, James Patterson, Scotty Walls, Daelen Mingus, Matthew Edwards, Lewis Barnwell, Mark Grant, Lewis Walls and David Burrell.

The family will receive friends from 12 pm-2 pm, Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy.

Harley “Ervin” Golden, age 90 of Murphy, NC passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at the Life Care Center in Ducktown, TN.

He was born on August 20, 1928 in Cherokee County, NC to the late Dr. Thomas M. Golden and Bessie Mundy Golden Amburn. Ervin was an avid outdoors person. He loved to hunt in his younger days. Ervin spent his entire life in the timber business and was a hard worker. When he retired from the timber business he enjoyed gardening. Ervin was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church; and he and Christine served as church janitors for many years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Townsend Golden; one son, Tommy Golden; brothers, Mitchell, Otto and Eddie Golden and sisters, Esma Viitala, Mae Vance, Mary Bailey and Helen Kearley.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Ware and husband Etheridge of Mineral Bluff, GA and Ann Price and husband Paul of Hayesville; one son, Tim Golden and wife Mary of Murphy; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Desma Upton of Michigan and two brothers, Johnny Golden of Murphy and Curt Golden of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Friday, June 21, 2019 at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Rev. Ronnie Crisp will officiate. Music will be provided by Selina Davis and the Golden Family. Burial will be in the church cemetery by his beloved wife Christine. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Scott Price, Kevin Ware, Clay Ware, Brian Ledford, Lee Golden and nephew, Mitchell Golden.

The family will receive friends from 11 am – 1 pm, Friday, June 21, 2019 at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.

Louie “The Kitchen Knife Man” Esposito (Decker’s Flea Market) passed away peacefully on May 22, 2019 after many years of fighting his health battles.

He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Frances Esposito, daughter Susan Ruby, son-in-law Ken Ruby, granddaughter Samantha Ruby and her fiancé Steve Sardone along with many friends he had met along the way.

There will be a gathering to celebrate Louie’s life and his love of the mountains on Friday, July 5, 2019 3 PM at Townson-Rose Funeral Home, 138 Peachtree Street, Murphy, NC 28906.

Betty Ruth McCombs, age 81 of Murphy passed away Monday June 10, 2019 at Erlanger Medical Center.

Betty was a lifetime resident of Cherokee County and the daughter of the late Luther and Edith Fair Allen. She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a step-mother, Annie Mae Allen; her husbands, Neil Colbert and Furman McCombs; son, Nicholos Colbert; brothers, Chester, Walter, Edward and Frank Allen, Steve Owens and sister, Evelyn Colbert.

She is survived by her sons, Gregory and Pernell Colbert; daughters, Edith Lloyd of Murphy, Betty Torrence and husband Victor of Charlotte and Charlene Davis and husband Patrick of Murphy; brothers, Johnny Allen and wife Shirley of Andrews, Charles Allen and wife Barbara of Las Vegas, Oscar Allen of Murphy, Preston Allen and wife Missy of Murphy and Martin Allen of Murphy; sisters, Margaret Moore of California, Judy Colbert and husband Jeff, Selma Jackson, Ruby Allen, Yvonne Allen, Zulia Allen and Mattie Ann Brown and husband Ervin all of Murphy; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Murphy. Rev. John Paul Webb and Rev. Louis Grant will officiate. James Harold Annis, age 83 of Murphy, NC passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at his residence.

He was born in Madison County, NC to the late Oscar Harold Annis and Lorene McDaris Ricker. James was a US Navy veteran. He worked for Southern Railroad. James enjoyed watching Westerns, fishing and shooting guns. He was a member of South End Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah Annis and one granddaughter, Misty.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Annis; two sons, James Harold Annis, Jr. and wife Melinda and Harold Landon Annis and wife Summer; one daughter, Melissa Yonce and husband James; one step-brother, Joseph Ricker, Jr; six grandchildren, Ryan, Shay, Kellie, Savanna, Joseph and Jadeyn.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Steve Sneed will officiate. Burial will be in the Hampton Memorial Cemetery with military graveside rites being conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC. Patricia Wright Patterson: Obituary

Patricia Wright Patterson, 73, of Murphy, passed away Friday, August 16, 2019, surrounded by family at her daughter’s home in Cartersville, Georgia.  She was a native of Cherokee County and had lived in Marietta, Georgia, Palmdale, California, and Iran before returning to Hiwassee Dam in 1996. She had worked as an operator for Southern Bell, a sales associate at Southern Linen, and for Foster’s Doughnuts in Palmdale.  Her favorite job was being a homemaker to her family. She was a devoted member of Murphy Bible Church. Pat loved spending time at church and studying the Bible.  Pat passed on her skills and love of making biscuits to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She had a talent for making everyone feel as if they were her favorite.

She was the daughter of the late Calvin Elmo and Versie Helton Wright and wife of the late Robert M. Patterson, who died March 22, 2019. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Michael Wright; and a sister-in-law, Judy Allen Wright.

Surviving are two daughters, Pamela Timbs and husband, Jeff of Cartersville, Georgia and Penny Garrison and husband, Billy of Winston, Georgia; a son, Paul Patterson of Murphy; a brother, Rex Wright and wife, Charlotte of Murphy; nine grandchildren, Heather, Ryan, Haleigh, Breanna, Paul, Pierce, Zachary, Caleb, and Caitlyn; seven great-grandchildren, Savannah, Eli, Sophia, Ava, Susana, Malachi, and Catalina. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Ware and Rev. Keith Allison officiating.  The interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Darryl Wright, Adam Wright, Roger Campbell, Mark Patterson, Randy Patterson, and Thomas Wright.  Honorary pallbearers will be Donnie Wright, Joey Reid, and Harold Helton.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2019 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy where the body will be until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

Darlene Alice Schorik, age 76 of Murphy, NC passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at her residence.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois and was the daughter of the late Albert and Alice McNally Diederich. Darlene retired from MGM Brakes.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Schorik.

She is survived by three sons, Richard Schorik and Rose Edwards, Gary Starnes and Angela Beaver and Dale Schorik; one brother, William Diederich; one sister, Maryann Fiorelli; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Susan Dockery, age 61 of Andrews, NC passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, TN.

She was born in Macon County, NC to Ruth Pendergrass Orr of Andrews, NC and the late Sterling Bateman. Susan was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Benny Bateman.

She is survived by; one niece, Amber Bateman and her children, Nathan, Arian, Andrea and Areya; and two nephews, Tyler and Justin Bateman.

Funeral Service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Rev. Jeremiah Wyke will officiate. Burial will be in the Valleytown Cemetery.

Franklin Martin: Obituary

Franklin Martin, 86, of Murphy, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2019 at his residence.  He was a native of Murphy, but had lived in Beloit, Ohio. He had worked for General Motors for 35 years as a dye maker until his retirement in 1991 and then returned to Murphy.  Franklin was a Korean War Veteran serving in the United States Army.

He was a member and deacon of Ogreeta Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening.

He was the son of the late Fred and Elsie Graves Martin. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dollie Smart and two brothers, Devero and Clyde Martin.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Alice Worley Martin of Murphy; a son David Martin of Flowery Branch, Georgia; a sister, Nancy Helms of Murphy; two brothers, Fred Martin, Jr. and wife, Ollie of Brasstown and George Martin and wife, Sandy of Manchester, Tennessee. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with Rev. Eddie Duckworth and Rev. Eddie Cook officiating.  The interment will be in Grape Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites provided by the Murphy American Legion Post 96, Hayesville VFW Post 6812, and Hayesville American Legion Post 532.  Pallbearers will be Steve, Keith, and Jeff Martin, Paul Worley, Doug Radford, and Tom and Aaron Kephart.  Honorary pallbearers will be Floyd Worley and Larry Davis.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-2:50 p.m. Tuesday, August 20th at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the service.

Charlotte Jean Patterson, age 82 of Nasheville, TN passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2019 in Nashville, TN.

She was born in Indianapolis, IN to the late Eugene and Lois Lawless Creekmore. Charlotte and her husband operated Chars Socks at the Decker Flea Market in Murphy. She loved to fish and play golf. Charlotte was of the Lutheran faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Patterson.

She is survived by three sons, Bob Patterson and wife Anne of Windmere, FL, Ron Patterson and wife Pam of Gallatin, TN and Larry Patterson and wife Freda of West Palm Beach, FL; two daughters, Kathy Magyar and husband Daniel of Fairview, TN and Lori Dennis and husband Doug of Miami, FL; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3 pm, Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Rev. Calvin Murphy will officiate. Pallbearers will be Bob, Ron and Larry Patterson, Daniel Magyar, Jakob Klotz and John Alfassa.

Betty Pearson Westmoreland, age 89 of Murphy, NC passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Murphy Rehab and Nursing.

She was born in Chattanooga, TN to the late Walter and Blanche Henderson Pearson. Betty graduated from Central High School. She retired from the Cherokee County School System. Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Murphy, Murphy Methodist Women’s Circle and the Garden Club. She was a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Betty was a devoted and loving wife to her husband George.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, George Westmoreland and one brother, Jim Pearson.

She is survived by three sons, Gary Westmoreland and wife Jan, Larry Westmoreland and wife Kevennie and Ronnie Westmoreland and wife Sharon; one sister, Jo Swann; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixon, TN. Rev. Wil Posey will officiate. Pallbearers will be Johnny Swann, Tony Sutter, Alvin Sutter, Larry Kernea, Barry Westmoreland and Dexter Hubbard. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Hughes and Morris Graves.

She was the daughter of the late John Roy and Lona Audrey McClure Scroggs and the wife of the late Keith Scroggs who died November 11, 1991.

Surviving are a son, John Keith Scroggs and wife, Anne of Fairfax, Virginia and a grandson, Keith Franklin Scroggs.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Powell Allen. Brookley was a secretary.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Brian Allen and Bently Damon Allen.

She is survived by two sisters, Beverly Allen and Brenda Allen Lloyd and husband Greg of Murphy.

Daniel Monroe Wilson: Obituary

Daniel Monroe Wilson, 68, of Brasstown passed away Sunday, August 18, 2019 in a Murphy care facility. He was born August 5, 1951.  The first of four children of the late Eleanor Lambert Wilson and Herman Monroe Wilson, Danny lived most of his adult life on the farm in Brasstown.  With his parents, he was a founding member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Hayesville.

Danny loved to cook.  He worked at various restaurants in the area before beginning a 25 year career in the dietary department at Murphy Medical Center where he is remembered for “going way beyond his duties to do extra special things for the employees” and for the patients.

He was also known for his love of gardening.  Working as the “Chief Mower” at the John C. Campbell Folk School from 2002 to 2011, his dedication and hard work were evident in the beauty of the campus.

Everyone knew Danny as he walked everywhere he went.  He appreciated everyone who gave him rides.  Danny was known as the perennial judge for the Annual Possum Drop at Clay’s Corner in Brasstown after his win as the Possum Queen of 2000.  An avid folk dancer, Danny spent many Friday evenings at the Folk School in his “red dancing shoes” often helping others learn the steps.  Another hobby he loved was bowling with his friends and he participated in league tournaments.  He bowled a perfect game in 1995.

Danny will be remembered for the love and kindness that he showed others, his pride and appreciation for his friends, and an ability to find joy and meaning in life which allowed him to rise above any obstacle. He was loved by everyone.

He is survived by his three siblings, Eleanor Anne Wilson Harper of Timonium, Maryland, John Herman Wilson of Danville, Kentucky, and Florence Wilson Atwood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; six nieces and nephews, Ben, Catherine, James, Anne, Sarah, and David.

James Wesley Truett, age 81, of Andrews, NC passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019 in the Clay County Care Center.

He was a native of Cherokee County and the son of the late Aston Dillard and Ethel Stiles Truett. James had worked for Magnavox and Baker Furniture as a sander and finishing furniture. He loved hunting and fishing. James enjoyed gardening and sitting on the porch.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Stewart Truett; two daughters, Shirley Hardin and Linda Burris both of Andrews; one brother, Richard Truett; three sisters, Judy Huskins, Janice Ford and Dorothy Wilson.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 2 pm at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Rev. Steve Cothren will officiate. Burial will be in the Valleytown Cemetery.
