Geraldine Grace Swartz, age 91 of Murphy, NC passed away Sunday, February 10, 2019 at PruittHealth –Town Center in Harrisburg, NC.

She was born in Crow, West Virginia to the late William and Bertha Boley Redden. Geraldine was an insurance agent for Independent Life and also worked several years for the Social Security Office. She was an ordained minister with the Church of the Science of Minds. Geraldine traveled extensively. She was a member of the Alcohol Anonymous for 47 years and attended the Church of the Science of Minds in Blairsville, GA.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo W. Swartz; and four brothers and five sisters.

She is survived by three sons, Jerry Carpenter of Ocala, FL, Merle Radford of Concord, NC and Franklin Radford of Ft. Myers, FL; one sister, Marie Oaks of Shady Springs, WV; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Speaker J.J. Carpenter will conduct the service

Dane George Simmons, age 71 of Andrews, NC passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019 at his residence.

He was born in Rinebeck, NY to the late Benjamin Harvey and Dorothy VanWagoner Simmons. Dane was a US Army veteran. He received a degree for Diesel Engineering from M.I.T. He was a diesel mechanic and also worked on small engines. Dane was a member of the D.A.V. and a member of Cornerstone Community Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa; children, Bruce Caldwell, Breanne Holt, Heather Miller, Brittany Simmons, Lindsey Simmons, Stephanie Phillips, Emily Phillips and Kellie Phillips; one brother, John Simmons; one sister, Debie Simmons; and twelve grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Billy Ray Mashburn

Billy Ray Mashburn, age 66 of Murphy went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 15, 2019.

He was the son of the late Leonard Jackson and Lillie Melinda Farmer Mashburn. Billy was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Ogreeta Baptist Church. He enjoyed socializing at the Unaka Community Center and visiting with his large extended family. Billy worked in the carpet mills in Dalton, Ga, drove a bus for Cherokee County Schools and worked at Mundy’s Lumber Company.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Leonard Mashburn and a nephew, Jonathan Edward Carroll.

He is survived by four sisters, Wilma Mashburn Beaver of Marble, Lois Mashburn Sneed and husband Stanley and Thelma Mashburn Allen and husband Robert all of the Ebenezer community and Doris Mashburn of Trenton, FL; two brothers, Herman Mashburn and wife Elaine and Paul Mashburn and wife Regina all of the Unaka community; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 pm, Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Calvin Murphy will officiate. Music will be provided by David Lovingood. Burial will be in the Unaka Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Adam, Jerry, Melvin, David and Jason Mashburn and Tyler Dockery. Honorary pallbearers will be James Sneed and Tripp Beaver. Sylvania “Boots” Stiles, age 83 of Murphy, NC passed away Sunday, February 17, 2019.

She was born in Madison County, NC to the late Milton Edd and Johnnie Ballard English. Sylvania worked for Outboard Marine Company as a gear matcher. She loved line dancing and was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Charles English.

She is survived by one son, David Stiles and wife Donna; one daughter, Marian Murphy and husband Bill; four grandchildren, Hannah Talon Stiles, Micah Murphy, Jason Murphy and Daniel Murphy and three great-grandchildren, Sarah Murphy, Jacob Murphy, and Hadalie Murphy.

Funeral Services will be held at 7 pm, Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Lawrence English will officiate. A private family graveside service will be held in the Stiles Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Micah, Jason, Daniel and Jacob Murphy, Cody Moore, Benjamin English and Trevor Grant.

Jane Wilson, age 93 of Marble, NC passed away Monday, February 11, 2019 at her home.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County and the daughter of the late Sidney and Iowa Harbin Wilson. Jane worked for Clifton Precision. She loved gardening and canning. As well, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Jane was a member of the Peachtree United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Wilson, whom she was married to for 57 years; a son, Richard Wilson; and two brothers, James and Bill Pendley.

Jane is survived by a son, Harold Wilson and wife Carolyn; one sister, Jean Pendley Ingram: four grandchildren, Dwayne Wilson and wife Samantha, Trent Wilson, Kristi Mingus and husband Michael, and Brad Wilson and wife Kimberly. She also is survived by six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3 pm, Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the Peachtree United Methodist Church. Pastor David Feathers will officiate. Burial will be in the Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dwayne Wilson, Trent Wilson, Brad Wilson, Nathanael Wilson, Noah Wilson, Reggie Pendley, and Michael Mingus.

Catherine Whitaker, age 74 of Andrews, NC passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018 at her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late Grady and Lula Guffey Brackett. Catherine was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy Carter; her sisters, Margaret Gladden, Enda Conley, Iva Conley and Eva Whitaker; and brothers, Dee Brackett and Ray Bracket.

She is survived by two daughters, Wanda Underwood and Janice Whiter; two sons, Jack Whitaker and Arnold Crawford; two sisters, Lucille Burchfield and Faye Stewart; a brother Neil Brackett; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Sunday, December 23, 2018 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Rev. Bo Phillips and Rev. Patrick O’Dell will officiate. Burial will be in the Old Mother Cemetery in Robbinsville, NC. Pallbearers will be Corey Underwood, Mikey Laney, Jacob Whitaker, Edwin Flowers, Eddie Conley and Harry Carter. She was a native of Prince William County, VA and the daughter of Gary Robert and Teresa Mathis Jones of Hayesville, NC. Tabetha was a Registered Nurse and loved her job. She enjoyed her animals and boating.

In addition to her parents she is survived by her two daughters, Brooklyn Leamon and husband Dallas of Murphy, NC and Kayli Ann Howard of Cleveland, TN; two brothers, Dustin Jones of Charlotte, NC and Brett Jones and wife Rachel of Hayesville, NC.

A Graveside Service will be held at 12 pm, Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews, NC.

Vaud King, age 94 of Murphy, NC passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late McKinley and Minnie Headrick Stiles. Vaud was a lunchroom manager in the school system and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon King; one son, Harold King; brothers, Harvey, Herman, Homer and Jack Stiles; and sisters, Norma Nix, Mae Roberts and Oma Taylor.

She is survived by one son, Steve King; one brother, Claude Stiles; two sisters, Barbara Anderson and husband Edgar and Eunice Johnson; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Pastors Ronnie Crisp and Randy Johnson will officiate. Music will be provided by Russell Anderson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kevin King, Clint Rankin, Jimmy Bailey, Chris Johnson, Danny Turner and Rodney Vice. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Martin and Edgar Anderson.

Thomas Van Mott, age 88 of Ormond Beach, Florida passed away Sunday, February 17, 2019 at the Hayesville House.

He was born in Washington, DC to the late Charles and Selma McMillen Mott. Thomas was a self-employed car dealership owner. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. Thomas loved to go on cruises, horse races and playing cards. He was a member of the Halifax River Yacht Club of Daytona Beach, FL, Moose Lodge of Ormond Beach, FL and the Lions Club in Herndon, VA.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first cousin, Margaret Coomber.

He is survived by his wife, Dolly Mott, they were high school sweethearts and been married for 68 years; two sons, John “Jack” Mott and Bob Mott and wife Stacey all of Ormond Beach, FL; one daughter, Mary Mott of Hayesville; second cousin, Vicky Coomber; three grandsons, John Mott of Hayesville, Chase and Robby Mott both of Ormond Beach, FL.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Betty Jo Hughes Wilson, age 84 of Murphy, NC passed away Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Murphy Rehab & Nursing.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late Clingman and Hattie Bishop Hughes. Betty worked for Gold Kist Manufacturing. She was avid reader. Betty loved her grandchildren and kids. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Wilson; two brothers, Herman and Robert Hughes and one grandchild.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Wilson and wife Roseitta and Bobby Wilson; one daughter, Barbara Bell and husband Lawrence; two sisters, Anna Margaret Arrant and Stilla Louise Carter; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 pm, Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the Murphy Free Methodist Church. Ricky and Richard Wilson will conduct the service.

Jim M. Williams, age 72 of Brasstown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at his home. Jim was born June 18, 1946 in Columbus, OH to the late Ralph and Dorothy Williams, he was Methodist in faith and served his country bravely during the Vietnam War, enlisting in the US Navy. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed working on his hot rod and he worked as a bartender at Harrah’s Valley River Casino. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jerry Allen.

Survivors include wife, Brenda Jellel Williams, one son, Brian James Williams, one daughter, Christina (Curt) Parrish, sister, Nancy Allen, brother, Dean Williams and five grandchildren.

Irvin James Chambers age 90 of Cornelia, Georgia and formerly of Murphy passed away January 23, 2019 at the Life Care Center of Copper Basin in Ducktown, TN.

He was a native of Cherokee County and the son of the late James Marion and Mattie Weeks Chambers. Irvin was a retired barber and was a US Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, Irvin was preceded in death by his wife Mary Mills Chambers who passed away December 31, 2018; two brothers, Roy Chambers and Henry; five sisters, Forrest Whitener, Georgia Mae Deal, Maddie Bryant, Lydia Bryson and Edith Carringer.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He is survived by two brothers, Brian Coffey and wife Kimberly and Tim Coffey; five nieces, one great-niece, five great-nephews and several Aunts and Uncles.

He was born in Swain County, NC to the late Joseph Fred and Nellie Hall Jones. He had worked in auto parts and for the ABC store in Murphy, NC. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and riding his lawn mower.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Jones.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Brooks Jones; daughter, Tammy Jones of Dothan, AL; grandchildren, Matthew May and wife Skye and Jordan Hand and wife Molly; great-grandchildren, Landon May, Dakota Arrow May and Mary Ellis Hand.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Bo Phillips will officiate.
