Virginia E. Erickson, 93, of Hayesville passed away Monday, April 16, 2018 in a Murphy hospital. She was a native of Concordia, Kansas and lived most of her life in Stromsburg, Nebraska before moving to Fort Pierce, Florida and then to Hayesville, North Carolina in 1990. Virginia was a retired first grade teacher having worked for 20 years. She was a member of the Marble Springs Baptist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Rev. Walfred Gustaf and Ruth Elizabeth Carlson Holmberg and the wife of the late Alfred Lloyd Erickson, who died December 27, 1998. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sherill Ruth Conrad, who died November 10, 2000.

Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Garrett of Hayesville; three sons, Dr. Charles Arthur Erickson of Aberdeen, Idaho, Curtis Lloyd Erickson of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina, and Jay Lloyd Erickson and wife, Adrienne of Andrews, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Justin Garrett and wife, Robin, Travis Garrett and wife, Shawna, and Matthew and Caleb Erickson; and five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nickolas Dixson, Kaylie and Mattie Garrett, and Emmalee Erickson.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018 in the Marble Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. John Bailey and Jimmy Tanner officiating.

Garry Uranus Deyton, 63, of Topton passed away Monday, April 9, 2018 in Erlanger Medical Center. He was a native of Cherokee County where he had lived most of his life. He had served in the United States Air Force. Garry had worked for Duke Power as a nuclear engineer. He had worked as a cook locally at Elsie’s Steak and Seafood. Garry loved horseback riding and taking part in the Wagon Train. He was a Christian of the Baptist faith.

He was the son of Mary Louise Edwards of Topton, and the late Uranus Deyton. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jeremy Deyton, and an infant sister, Susie Diane Deyton.

Surviving in addition to his mother, are a son, Jordan Deyton of South Carolina; three sisters, Sherry Maxwell and husband, Russell of Hendersonville, NC, Sheila Bettis and husband, Bob of Marble, NC and Gina Jones of Andrews, NC; a brother, Larry Deyton of Topton, NC; seven nieces and nephews; and three great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 am Thursday, April 12, 2018 in the chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews with Rev. Tommy Jones officiating. Interment was in the Red Marble Baptist Cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion Post 96, Murphy DAV Chapter 73, and the Hayesville American Legion Post 532, Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison Bristol). Pallbearers were Jackie, Michael, and Kenneth Deyton, Byron Minto, Russell Maxwell, and Bob Bettis. Tony and Dennis Deyton served as honorary pallbearers.

The family received friends from 6-8 Wednesday evening, April 11 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews.

Edna Mae Cross, 78, of Sylva, formerly of Topton, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2018 in a Sylva care facility. She was a native of Cherokee County, where she had lived most of her life before moving to Sylva in 2010. Edna retired from Baker Furniture and was a member of Red Marble Baptist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Hill and Mae Jones Dockery and the wife of the late Charles Donald Cross, who died July 9, 2010.

Surviving are a son, Chuck Cross and wife, Kathy of Sylva; a sister, Mary Ellen Mehaffey of Robbinsville; three brothers, Boyd Dockery of Topton, Dean Dockery and wife, Sandra of Marble, and Carroll Dockery of Mooresville, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2018 in the Red Marble Baptist Church with the Revs. Mickey Stewart and Tim Dockery officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Scott, Bobby, Darrell, and Chris Dockery, Jerry Campbell, and Allen Raper. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Yonce, Larry Dailey, Harold Coggins, and Jeff Darnell.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews where the body will be until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

Roy Gene Dockery, 78, of Marble passed away Friday, March 23, 2018 in Park Ridge hospital, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was a native and lifetime resident of Marble.  He was a 1958 graduate of Murphy High School.  Roy had worked for over thirty-five years at American Thread plant until his retirement in 2002.  He was a member of Marble Springs Masonic Lodge #439.  Roy enjoyed coaching youth basketball and fishing. He enjoyed raising Shih Tzu’s for many years and gold prospecting.  He loved his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.

He was the son of the late J.P. and Cora Franklin Dockery and the husband of the late Carolyn “Tootsie” Lovingood Dockery, who died February 2, 2007. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Dockery and Lena Owens and a brother, Steve Dockery.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Brooks and husband, Steve of Clarkesville, Georgia and Teresa Baker and husband, Keith of Blairsville, Georgia; a son, Kevin Dockery and wife, Erica of Asheville, North Carolina; two brothers, Frank Dockery of Marble and Albert Dockery and wife Kate of Murphy; six grandchildren, Barrett Rogers, Brandon Rogers, Keisha Dockery, Stephanie Hough, Sarah Bowman, and Brittney Dockery; five great grandchildren, Savannah Rogers, Tate Rogers, Hutch Dockery, Colt Rogers, and Levi Hough. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2018, in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Rev. Jim Hall officiating. The interment was in Moss Cemetery. Pallbearers were Barrett Rogers, Heath Dockery, Brandon Rogers, Jackson Baker, Patrick Graham, Chuck Davis, and T.J. Hansen.

The family received friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.
