Frances Oden Moffat passed away peacefully at home among her family in the early evening Monday, August 10, 2015. Fran was born May 13, 1924 in Gibsland, Louisiana to Steverson and Margaret Oden. The second of two children, she was preceded in death by her brother Steve Junior in 1925, by her father in 1937, and by her mother in 1985.
Fran attended Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana and completed two years at Centenary College. In 1943 she left school to take a full time job as an executive secretary. Fran was married to David Louis Moffat on July 10th 1946, making good on their engagement promise to each other in 1943 (after two weeks of dating) prior to his posting to England and France during WWII. Fran took on the role of a military wife when Dave was called back to the Air Force during the Berlin Air Lift until his retirement in 1965 and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.
Fran was an adept needlepointer, enthusiastic and accomplished bridge player, excellent cook, and loving friend. She was particularly active in her church, St. Luke’s Episcopal, North Little Rock, Arkansas, from 1964 – 2010, serving in a variety of roles from office assistant to vestry member over the years. Fran stayed active at her ’new’ church, Christ the King Anglican, upon relocating to Hayesville in 2011.
Fran was mother to two sons, Arthur Lewis Moffat II (1951-1989) and Steverson Oden Moffat. Dave preceded her death in 2008 after 62 years of marriage. She is survived by Steverson, his wife Bess, and their children Jane, Niles, Penn, and Liam and by Arthur’s son David Lynn Stanton and David’s three daughters. A memorial service will be held at Christ the King Anglican in Hiawassee, Georgia at 2:00 pm on August 22nd.
