Charles Frank Calhoun, age 86, of Murphy, died Friday, March 18, 2016 in a Murphy hospital. Frank was a lifelong resident of Murphy. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army stationed in Panama and worked in the Motor Pool as a Sergeant.  He was a well-known business man for many years and owned and operated Frank’s Garage from the early 1960s till 1973, when Frank and son, David started Murphy Marine.  He was a boat dealer for the area for several years.  After retiring from the boat business, Frank then created Murphy Communications which was a commercial radio business that serviced businesses and law enforcement.

He was a ham radio operator (WB4KHM), was involved in local politics in his younger years, loved boats, fishing, and Hiawassee Lake.  One of his favorite stories was about him and Jack Ramsey setting the island on fire when they were kids and watching it burn.  He was a unique individual. He could fix a car, boat or a two-way radio and made business from these talents.  He loved Murphy and never wanted to leave even for a vacation.  He fought not to leave until the end.

He was the son of the late Charles I. Calhoun and Fannie K. Calhoun, and was married to the late Susie Calhoun.

Surviving are a son, David Calhoun of Cartersville, Georgia; a daughter, Kathy Ann Stevens of Buford, Georgia; a sister, Frances Owen of Knoxville, Tennessee; and a niece, Jean Holbert of Alabama.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2016 in the Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating.
