Mr. William G. ”Bill” Phillips: Obituary

William G. ”Bill” Phillips, age 76, of Peachtree Community, Murphy, died Friday, July 15, 2016 in Murphy Medical Center. He was a native of Jackson County, Alabama, but had lived in Atlanta, Georgia and Dallas, Texas for several years before moving to Cherokee County in 1992. Bill was a graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama receiving a bachelor’s degree in business. He retired in 1990 after a successful career with Sears. Bill later owned and operated a Car Quest store in Blue Ridge, Georgia and also worked as a Marshal and ran the Pro-Shop at Chatuge Shores Golf Course. He was a faithful member and Sunday School teacher of the Murphy First Baptist Church. Bill was an avid golfer, tennis player, and loved classic muscle cars and Alabama football.
He was the son of the late R.Z. and Maxine Smith Phillips and the husband of the late Margaret Curtis Phillips.
Surviving are three sons, Zachary Phillips of Murphy, Randy Phillips and wife, Brenda of Birmingham, Alabama, and Luke Phillips and wife, Tammy of Tyler, Texas; two sisters, Brenda Linard of Gulf Breeze, Florida and Liz Price of Smyrna, Georgia; four grandchildren, Stephanie Gwen, Joshua, Rebecca, and Anna Phillips.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2016 in the Murphy First Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Tanner and Dr. Chester Jones officiating. The interment was in Peachtree Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were William Shook, Jason and Israel Killian, Daniel Cable, William Paine, and David Cantrell.
The family received friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy where the body remained until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made in memory of William G. “Bill” Phillips to the Murphy First Baptist Church, 517 Hiwassee Street, Murphy, NC 28906.
