CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C. – The Learning Center’s entire middle school class welcomed a special guest speaker today all the way from Sweden. Mr. Mats Fristedt addressed the Learning Center’s middle schoolers today. He gave an introduction about where he was from, and how life in Sweden compared to life here in the states.

He offered them insight into his schooling, taxes in Sweden(65% of your income), social programs the Swedish government offer, and which field he decided to go into 14 years ago. I personally was impressed with how the children behaved. They were focused, quiet, showered their guest speaker with respect, and their attention. When asked how he thought the children did, Fristedt replied “I was surprised how well they behaved themselves.”

They covered everything from sugar beets, to the evolution of the windows operating systems, to the origin of the popular video game Minecraft. Which to even my surprise was developed and created in Sweden.

Fristedt works as an  IT Service manager responsible for over 620 employees. He explained how he started working in the sugar beet fields when he was a boy during the summer breaks from school. Pulling weeds in between the rows and rows of sugar beets. “It was not fun work, but you get money” said Fristedt.

Towards the end of his presentation, Fristedt answered questions from some of the middle schoolers, and even received a loud round of applause at the end. We took a few group photos and videos, and then the children were dismissed for the day.

You could really feel how interested the students were in learning more about the technology they have come to take for granted. To witness their growing minds process this new information was similar to watching the total eclipse, I couldn’t help but observe in silence.
