The Andrews Lady Wildcats begin the season with a sense of optimism that has not been there for a long time. While they know they are not ready to go out and win the conference there is a strong feeling that this could be the best season in a long time. It is no easy task they play in the toughest girls basketball conference in the state. Yet the Lady Wildcats are ready to go out and surprise some people this season.
Last Year’s Team:
The Lady Wildcats went winless last season and have only won one game in the last two seasons combined. While they did lose a few seniors they bring back most of their firepower from last season. They fought hard in a lot of games last year but a small roster really made it a struggle.
This Years Team:
This season is a different story as they have as large a roster as they had in the last five or so years. Head coach Eric Duong mentioned several players for them in his preseason interview. Emily Mealer will lead the way for the Lady Wildcats, they are confident in her ability to score it. A player that didn’t play as freshman but is playing this year as a sophomore is Kinleigh Queen. Coach Duong expects her to also be one of their bigger contributors. They also have a very strong freshman class coming in led by Kylie Donaldson who should as the year goes on could play a leading role.
- Robbinsville (11-1) 2. Murphy (10-2) 3. Rosman (7-5) 4. Cherokee (7-5) 5. Swain (4-8) 6. Hayesville (3-9) 7. Andrews (0-12)
With Rosman no longer in the conference, the Big Smoky Mtn conference is now made up of 6 teams. Robbinsville and Murphy will once again probably fight it out for first place. While both are also state championship contenders. Cherokee is always strong and will look to fight their way into one of the top two spots. Swain returns quite a bit and could be a team we see take a big step forward. Hayesville is very young and lost quite a bit off of last year’s team.

Expectations & Goals:
The Lady Wildcats should most definitely take a step forward this year. What does that look like? Well playing in an incredibly tough Smoky Mtn Conference could mean it is only a few conference wins. Yet even one conference win would be an improvement over the last two seasons. Also with a full non conference schedule this year expect the Lady Wildcats to definitely win a handful of games. As well, if their freshman class grows up quicker than expected the Lady Wildcats could really surprise some people. Regardless, the future is as bright as it has been for Andrews in several years.
