Hot 7-on-7 Scrimmage at AC Reynolds High School – More Better for the Bulldogs

(Asheville-Reynolds Community) – – Official high school football practice begins on July 31st for North Carolina prep teams in helmets.  The Murphy Bulldogs have been taking every opportunity to practice and work its new and young football team.  Murphy will have a lot fewer returning starters than it had last year, but will field some eager young talent that does not have varsity experience.  Every opportunity run against an opponent is worth its weight in gold.  While the Bulldogs have a playbook that is heavy on run plays, it may not be reasonable to say a 7-on-7 pass scrimmage does any good to knock the rust off returners and build football acumen for younger more inexperienced players.  Unity and getting on the same page may be the value this team is taking away.

Murphy is showing it has speed and the ability to make good decisions with the ball at the half-speed pass-option heaving scrimmages.  It has faced fierce teams like Hendersonville, A-C Reynolds, and for a second time the Burns Bulldogs.  The Murphy defense still shows areas to build its skill and reading faster teams, which it will face this season.  Bulldog Coach Joseph Watson says the team is working well and has some work to do before the first game rolls around in about a month at Franklin.

This season won’t be the first time a Murphy team will bring a young quarterback to lead its offense.  Brady Grant has been given the summertime chore to work at QB.  He has shared some snaps with Cole Vining.  Both are looking to get varsity experience.  As Bulldog teams in the past know, attitude and effort go a long way to make good plays on Friday night in the fall.  Grant appears to be very comfortable and confident leading the Bulldogs.

Murphy will continue its summer workouts until the entire time will put on the Gold and Black helmets for official practice.  It will run through a mandated time in helmets; then full-pads and limited contact before a pre-season scrimmage.  Eventually the season will open in the later weeks of August, on what has been a “hot” night in the Panther Pit in Franklin to open the non-conference portion of its 2023 season.  Get ready for the most wonderful time of the year…HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON!
