Mary Ruth Ledford, 79, of Hayesville passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2019 in a Blairsville, Georgia hospital. She was a native and lifetime resident of Clay County. She worked as a sewing machine operator and supervisor in the textile manufacturing industry most of her life. She later worked in housekeeping at Clay County Care Center until her retirement. She enjoyed reading love-inspired books and watching western movies on television.

She was the daughter of the late William Thomas “Tom” and Oma Long Mason and the wife of the late Kenneth “Red” Ledford, who died August 26, 2010. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Kate Mason, Helen Nichols, and Hazel Nicholson; and four brothers, Frank, Jack, Charles “Hoss”, and Bill Mason.

Surviving are her caretaker, friend, and special daughter, Mary Nichols of Hayesville; two sisters-in-law, Jesse Mason of Hayesville and Sandy Mason of Blairsville, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.

The interment will be in Myers Chapel Cemetery.

Denora Ramsey: Obituary

Denora Ramsey, 97, of Warne passed away Monday, August 5, 2019 in a Clay County care facility. She was a native of Elkhart, Indiana and had lived in Florida, residing in Pompano Beach for more than 30 years. She was a 1943 graduate of Florida State College for Women, now known as Florida State University, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Denora taught physical education and science at Pompano Beach Junior High School for 25 years, retiring in 1983 when she and her husband moved to Warne. She was in the women’s auxiliary of the Jaycees in Florida and served in the Good Shepherd Home Health Auxiliary in Hayesville. Denora was a member of the Hayesville Presbyterian Church. She volunteered at the Moss Memorial Library and Granny’s Attic Thrift Store.

She was the daughter of the late Harley W. and Ada Ella Burhans Ecker and the wife of the late Ted Ramsey, who died April 29, 1995.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Volpitto and husband, Paul of Augusta, Georgia; a son, Andy Ramsey and wife, Lynn of Irvington, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Justin and wife, Mary, Greg and wife, Jennifer, Jennifer and husband, Peter, Christi and husband, Al, Jessica and husband, Michael, and Leslie and husband, Derrick; and 14 great-grandchildren. A special thank-you to her friend and personal caregiver, Glenda Clayton.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Hayesville Presbyterian Church.

Cecil Carl Derreberry: Obituary

Cecil Carl Derreberry, 97, of Andrews, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at his residence.  Carl was born October 31, 1921 to Napoleon (Poley) and Betty Curtis Derreberry.  He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County.  Carl was a loving and caring husband, father, son, and brother.  Carl was a carpenter by trade and loved to build with his hands.  He also loved to garden and share his produce with friends and neighbors.  He was a lifetime member and deacon of Valley River Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Grace Luther Derreberry who died May 14,2016, infant daughter, Glenda Lou, grandson Clark Earwood, son-in-law Ron Hicks, four brothers Clyde, Claude, Ward and Hoyle Derreberry, and six sisters, Ruby Adams, Bonnie Barker, Mae Phillips, Marie West, Maggie Derreberry, and Bettie Sue Love Parker.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda Hedrick and husband, Jerry of Rutherford College, North Carolina, Vickie Hicks of Andrews, and Shirley Owenby and husband, Dick of Dillon, Montana, grandson, David Owenby and wife, Kelley of Erie, Colorado, brother Austin Derreberry and wife, Dot of Andrews, and sister, Joyce Foster of Advance, North Carolina. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a special caregiver, Angie Payne.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Valley River Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Phillips and Rev. Roger Derreberry officiating. Music will be provided by Tony Pace and Angie Payne. The interment will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites provided by the Murphy American Legion Post 96, Hayesville VFW Post 6812, and Hayesville American Legion Post 532. Pallbearers will be Danny Derreberry, Steve Adams, Jimmy Morgan, James Young, Cecil Warren, Eddie and Matthew Wood.  Honorary pallbearers will be David Williams, Bill Phillips, and Alvin Gunnels.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Valley River Baptist Church prior to the servce.

Henry E. Hatterman Jr: Obituary

Henry E. Hatterman Jr., 79, of Warne passed away Friday, August 2, 2019 at his residence. He was a native of Stamford, Connecticut. Henry also lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Hendersonville, North Carolina before moving to Warne in 2005. He had served in the United States Coast Guard. He was a truck driver with Carolina Freight, retiring with 30 years of employment. Henry was a member of the Teamsters, the Elks Lodge in Florida and Hendersonville, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Henry enjoyed collecting toy trucks and he loved animals.

He was the son of the late Henry Ernest and Gertrude Pelosi Hatterman and the husband of the late Patricia Hatterman. He was also preceded in death by a son, Henry Hatterman; and a brother, Vincent Hatterman.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Thiel Hatterman of Hayesville; a son, Vincent Hatterman of Lakeland, Florida; a step-daughter, Kimberly Franz of Black Mountain, North Carolina; a step-son, Kevin Sorrell of Florence, Kentucky; a granddaughter, Jessica Hatterman; and a great-grandson, Jonathan James.

Bernadine L. Capies: Obituary

Bernadine L. Capies, 95, of Gainesville, Georgia passed away Saturday, August 3, 2019 in a Clay County care facility. She was a native of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Bernadine was a homemaker.

She was the daughter of the late John and Ethel Tougher and the wife of the late Harry E. Capies.

Surviving are a son, John M. “Jack” Capies and wife, Joanne of Gainesville, Georgia; two grandchildren, Michelle Moon and Natalie Coffman and husband, Mike; five great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Joshua, and Logan Trossevin, and Acadia and Delaney Coffman.

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2019 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The inurnment will be in All Saints Cemetery.

Troice Ledford: Obituary

Troice Ledford, 42, of Andrews passed away Friday, August 2, 2019. He lived in Andrews most of his life. Troice worked construction as a welder and directional driller. He attended the Andrews United Methodist Church. He loved riding his Harley Davidson and enjoyed spending time on the lake in the boat with his children. He was always teaching them how to fix things around the house. Troice was a loving father and husband and his kids were his world.

He was the son of Janie Ledford of Dawsonville, Georgia and the late Bryan Chastain. Troice was adopted and raised by Belle Brown of Andrews.

Surviving, in addition to his mother and adoptive mother, are his wife and high school sweetheart, whom he married in 2015, Alaina Ledford; two daughters, Ethne Ledford and Electa Ledford, both of the home; four sons, Lochlainn Troice Ledford of the home, Dylan Ledford of Andrews, Dalton Bath of Boone, North Carolina, and Blake Huskins of Andrews; four brothers, Jerry Fricks of Dawsonville, Georgia, Willie Emert and Doug Emert, both of Maryville, Tennessee, and Ernie Emert of Florida; father and mother-in-law, Ricky and Kandy Barnard and special aunt, Peggy Yon; loving family members from Georgia; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins from the Birchfield family, who loved him like one of their own.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, 2019 in the Andrews United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Jolly and the Rev. Dr. Mary Brown officiating. The interment was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Shane Smith, Kenny Welch, Tim Adams, Jeff Huls, Mike Taylor, and Scott Harrelson.

The family received friends from 12-1:45 Monday afternoon at the Andrews United Methodist Church prior to the services.

Billy Edward Mills: Obituary

Billy Edward Mills, 90, of Murphy passed away Friday, August 2, 2019 at his residence. He was a native and lifetime resident of Murphy. Ed was a World War II veteran in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Randolph. He then re-enlisted with the Air Force and was also a Korean War veteran. Ed worked as a cutting room supervisor with several local textile manufacturing companies. He later worked as a maintenance foreman with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, retiring in 1994. Ed was a member of Grandview Baptist Church. He enjoyed working on his farm, woodworking, fishing, and reading. Ed loved his family.

He was the son of the late Maynard Edward and Lula Hall Mills and the husband of the late Irene Jones Mills, who died June 18, 2003. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Lula Bell Ladig, Tommie Revis, and Jean Dockery; a brother, Clyde Mills; and a son-in-law, Johnny Rowland.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty Jean (B.J.) Mills Thompson of Murphy; a son, Richard E. Mills and wife, Beckie of Hazel Green, Alabama; a sister, Mary M. Cousins of Sarasota, Florida; a brother, Maynard Jack Mills and wife, Frances of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Brandon Mills and wife, Hollie of Fayetteville, Tennessee, Jessica Hood and husband, John of Raleigh, North Carolina, Erica Sickler and husband, Billy of Athens, Alabama, Stephanie Godfrey and husband, Ross of Toney, Alabama, Chris Thompson of Murphy, Michael Thompson and wife, Elizabeth of Titusville, Florida; ten great-grandchildren and another great-granddaughter any day; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Rev. Steve West officiating. The interment will be in the Hanging Dog Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Murphy American Legion Post 96, Hayesville VFW Post 6812, and Hayesville American Legion Post 532. Pallbearers will be Brandon Mills, Billy Sickler, Justin Mills, Chris Thompson, and John Hood.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the son of the late Roy and Medley Rogers.

He is survived by one son, Dr. Damien Rogers of Florida; three brothers, Johnny, Sammy and Jimmy Rogers; and two sisters, Shirley Whitaker and Judy Kephart.

Clyde Boyd Dockery, age 75 of Andrews, NC passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at Valley View Care Center.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the son of the late Hill and Ester Dockery. Clyde worked for Gibson Furniture. He loved talking, dirt track racing, water skiing, mowing his grass and camping. Clyde was a member of Red Marble Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Kendall, James, Chuck and Ronald Dockery and one sister, Edna Cross.

He is survived by one son, Scott Dockery of Andrews, NC; two daughters, Missy Little and husband Kit of Ranger community and April Massey and husband Shawn of Marble, NC; two brothers, Carroll and Jerry Dean Dockery; one sister, Mary Mehaffey; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, August 3, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Rev. Mickey Stewart and Rev. Tim Dockery will officiate. Burial will be in the Red Marble Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Dockery, Darrell Dockery, Shawn Massey, Kit Little, Kendall Young, Aaron Young and Colby Little.

Albert Edward “Ab” Smith Jr: Obituary

Albert Edward “Ab” Smith Jr., 94, of Murphy passed away Thursday, August 1, 2019 at his residence. He was a native of Boxcartown, Pennsylvania. Ab was a combat veteran in the United States Air Force during World War II. He lived in South Florida throughout most of his life. Ab later moved to Murphy in 2012. He enjoyed yard sales and flea markets. Ab also enjoyed boating and fishing with his family while in Florida. He was a devout member of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church while in Florida and a current member of Saint William Catholic Church in Murphy. Ab was heavily involved with the Knights of Columbus in Vero Beach and Plantation, Florida where he was a Grand Knight.

He was the son of the late Albert Edward Sr. and Pauline Rush Smith and the husband of the late Anne Susanne Dietz Smith, who died September 30, 2011. He was also preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are a daughter, LaVerne Kingsbury and husband, Tim of Orlando, Florida; three sons, Albert Edward Smith of Boynton Beach, Florida, James Thomas Smith and wife, Carol of Plantation, Florida, and David Charles Smith of Murphy; a brother, William Smith of McKeesport, Pennsylvania; and eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

An inurnment will be held in South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida at a later date.

Ida Vivian Timpson, age 79 of Brasstown, NC passed away Monday, May 13, 2019 at Erlanger Medical Center.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, NC and the daughter of the late Edd and Mattie Jackson Arrant. Ida retired from Tri-County Community College as a director for the Adult Basic Education. She was a member of Hickory Stand United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles, Frank, Wilbert and Malcolm Arrant and sisters, Edith Deaver and Ruth Butler.

She is survived by her husband, Tim Timpson; two sons, Bert and Ed Timpson; one sister, Joanne Hart and husband Chuck; and two granddaughters, Brittany and Tiffany Timpson.

Funeral Services will be held at 4 pm, Monday, May 20, 2019 at the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church. Rev. Bryan Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mikie and Matthew Crawford, Steve Heberger and John Herbert.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm, Monday, May 20, 2019 at the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church.

Donald Leon Meltz, age 83 of Murphy, NC passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Erlanger Medical Center.

He was born in Atlantic City, NJ to the late Sam and Anne Leon Meltz. Donald retired from the US Air Force as a recruiter. He was also a security guard at Bear Paw for 15 years. Donald was a member of the St. William Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, William O’Brien and one step-sister, Christine Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Meltz of 49 years; sons, Lawrence, Timothy and Patrick O’Brien and Daniel and Stephen Meltz; two daughters, Cheryl Ketelhut and Elisabeth Graham; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am, Friday, May 17, 2019 at the St. William Catholic Church. Father Alex Ayala will officiate. Military honors will be conducted right after the service by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC.
