Obituaries January 22, 2020Lois Browning Woodard, age 92 of Brasstown, NC passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020.
She was born in Harlan, KY to late Boyd and Rachel Jones. Lois loved going to church, her family and visiting others. She was member of Hickory Stand United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Paul L. Browning, Jr.; two daughters, Sherri and Nova Browning; four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived one son, Mike Browning and wife Kris of Cincinnati, OH; one daughter, Marla Browning Heberger and husband Steve of Brasstown; one sister, Linda McClain of Adairsville, GA; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church. Rev. Bryan Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Teresa Diane Boring, 62, of Murphy, North Carolina passed away Monday, January 20, 2020 at her residence. She was a native of Maryville, Tennessee before moving to Cherokee County, North Carolina. She worked as a medical assistant and secretary in the healthcare industry. Teresa loved her Lord and Savior. She was a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church. She enjoyed her mission trips in Belize. She never met a stranger and left everyone with a smile. Teresa enjoyed cooking, crafting, and working in her flowers, but most of all, she loved spending time with her husband.
She was the daughter of Louie and Dixie Luttrell Harris of Maryville, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Moore.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her loving husband, Ernie Boring; two daughters, Amber Wills and husband, Justin of Hiwassee Dam, North Carolina and Erin McFaddin and husband, Brandon of Alexander, North Carolina; two sons, Isaac Boring and wife, Anne of Hiwassee Dam, and Barry Moore and wife, Andrea of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; a sister, Kelly White and husband, David of Maryville; a brother, Ronald Harris and wife, Chris of Maryville; six grandchildren, Christian, Jake, Savannah, Jared, Lillian, and Brody; two nieces, Cara and Caitlin; and two nephews, Britt and Chandler.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2020 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Revs. Tim Dickey and Richard Roberson officiating.

Diocese of Charlotte names former Murphy clergyman in list of accused abusers

MURPHY, NC — The Catholic Diocese of Charlotte today published a list of 14 clergy who have been
credibly accused of child sexual abuse in western North Carolina since the diocese was established in 1972.
The list is the result of a year-long process that included a comprehensive, independent review of more than 1,600 files dating back almost 50 years to ensure a full accounting of credibly accused clergy in the diocese’s history.
The file review confirmed that no clergy member serving in the Charlotte diocese today has a credible allegation of
sexual abuse against him. Records also show that all 14 clergy named on the list were long ago removed from ministry or died before allegations arose. Most of their names also were made known publicly years ago by the diocese and others.
One former clergyman Adelbert “Del” Holmes was accused of abusing three in 1976 while serving at St. William Catholic Church in Murphy, NC. Holmes was also assigned to Immaculate Conception Catholic Mission in Hayesville, NC.
The Ohio-based Glenmary Home Missioners first named Holmes to its list in Oct. 2019, which prompted the Charlotte, NC Diocese seek more information into the matter. In Nov., the society told the diocese Holmes had been accused of abusing three minors in 1976 in Murphy. The society also said another credible allegation stemmed from Holmes’ subsequent assignment in Franklin, KY.
Glenmary said it had received the North Carolina allegations in 1988, while Holmes was living at the society’s headquarters in Cincinnati, and that Holmes had admitted the abuse. According to the society, he was sent for treatment in 1988 and removed from ministry in 1991. Holmes died in 2013.
In Oct., the Diocese of Richmond, VA, added Holmes to its list of clergy with credible allegations of abuse that occurred in the Richmond diocese.
Overall Holmes appeared on four accused clergy lists: Glenmary Home Missioners, Diocese of Richmond, VA, Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and Diocese of Charlotte, NC.
Reflecting national trends, the review found that instances of alleged abuse in the Charlotte diocese peaked in the 1970s and dropped sharply in the 2000s as new protections were put in place by the Church. In the last 20 years, one credible case of abuse is alleged to have occurred in the diocese.
“It is painful to even try to comprehend such gravely immoral behavior,” Charlotte Bishop Peter J. Jugis wrote in a
letter published Monday along with the list and other abuse information. “However, in speaking with survivors and
hearing their stories, it is clear to me that making known the names of their abusers can promote healing for them and their families.”
“This list is the culmination of a process begun more than a year ago in our belief that a full accounting of credibly
accused clergy would provide validation for victims and demonstrate our commitment to transparency and
accountability,” wrote Jugis. On Sunday, the bishop offered prayers for abuse survivors and told parishioners about
conclusions of the diocese’s file review during Mass at St. Patrick Cathedral in Charlotte.
In addition to its list, the Charlotte diocese published information about credibly accused clergy who served in western North Carolina before the Charlotte diocese was established in 1972, when the Diocese of Raleigh oversaw the Catholic Church across the state. Also identified were clergy who served without documented incident in the Charlotte diocese but were accused of abuse or misconduct elsewhere on lists published by other dioceses and religious orders.
The diocese compiled the information on a new web page, www.accountability.charlottediocese.org, which also
features resources including a new hotline for reporting sexual abuse operated independently by Red Flag Reporting.
The hotline allows people to speak up, anonymously or not, when suspected sexual abuse or other unethical activity is noted.
The accountability web page is the latest in a series of steps the diocese has taken to prevent child sexual abuse since
2002, when the U.S. bishops adopted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Charter
mandates a zero-tolerance policy, strict screening and training standards, and protocols for reporting and preventing
abuse in all U.S. Catholic churches, facilities and programs.
In the fall of 2018, the diocese set in motion a multi-layered process to publish the names of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse. The diocese automatically placed on its list clergy who had admitted to allegations or were charged by law enforcement with child sexual abuse offenses. In addition, the diocese placed on its list all clergy who were determined by its Lay Review Board to have been credibly accused.
To ensure historical allegations were identified in the diocese’s files, independent investigators from U.S. Investigative Security Services of Charlotte reviewed 1,600 personnel files of priests, deacons and religious brothers, as well as other archives, for any indication of allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. Their review took more than 1,000 hours and encompassed 150,000 pages of documents. As a result, four credible cases of alleged abuse handled before the Charter protocols took effect in 2002 were surfaced from the files and included on the list.
“As with most organizations, very little attention had been paid to our personnel files going back almost 50 years, but
we knew it was important to explore their contents and make relevant information known,” said the Rev. Patrick J.
Winslow, a canon lawyer and former promoter of justice who oversaw the file review as the diocese’s newly appointed vicar general and chancellor. “Today, we sincerely hope our efforts will provide some validation for abuse survivors and promote a culture that allows people who may be suffering in silence to come forward and seek help.”
The Charlotte diocese has embraced – and built upon – the Charter protocols. Protections today include:
• Immediate required reporting of all abuse allegations to civil authorities.
• Required background checks and Safe Environment training for all personnel and volunteers.
• An independent Lay Review Board to investigate and determine credibility of abuse allegations.
• A rigorous code of conduct that prohibits Church personnel and volunteers from being alone with children,
except in rare circumstances that involve parental oversight.
• A local college seminary, founded in 2016, to promote local vocations, reduce reliance on outside clergy and
more closely guide the formation of its future priests.
“Please pray with me that this information achieves the goal of bringing healing to victims,” Jugis said in his letter.
“With the Lord’s help, we can continue fostering a safe and supportive environment in our parishes, schools and
ministries so that the Church in western North Carolina can help lead future generations to Him.”

He was born at Murphy Medical Center to Randy and Donna Rhodes Canup of Hayesville. Derick worked for Robert Penland Builders Poured Walls. He attended Hayesville Church of God.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nevaeh; and paternal grandfather, Paw Marvin Canup.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his sister, Whitney Canup; two nephews, Braleyn Thompson and Bently Canup; maternal grandmother, Martha Rhodes; and paternal grandmother, Louise Canup.

Obituaries January 18, 2020Florica “Sam” Spence, age 75 of Marble, NC passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Erlanger of Chattanooga.
She was born in Madrid, Spain to Frank and Ola Bell Belcher. Sam began her nursing career at Providence Hospital in Murphy, NC. She also worked at District Memorial in Andrews, NC before obtaining her RN. She worked many places before retiring from Personal Touch Assisted Living. Her life always consisted of caring for others.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two daughters, Cammy Spence and Nikki Crisp and one granddaughter, Krystal Millsaps.
Sam is survived by two daughters, Pam (Rick) DeVore and Abby Spence and one son David “CB” (Bennie Jo) McKinnon all of Marble, NC; grandchildren Shannon (Jeremy) Silvers, Sam (Barry) Cross, Shonda (Seth) McClure, Aaron (Candace) DeVore, Brittany (Dustin) Davis, Amanda Amos, Ben McKinnon, Jameson Bartholomew, Megan and Tasha Crisp; great grandchildren Dakoda Silvers, Chance and Coda Blair, Bryson Bolling, Brock and Kylie Cross, Myah and Scarlett McClure, Austin Davis; best friend, Pam Daniel and a special little friend, Payton Hyde.

Sally Stiles, 80, of Andrews passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020 in a Chattanooga, Tennessee hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County. Sally was a homemaker and was a member of the McClelland Cove Baptist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Floyd and Emma Williams Hodge. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Bertha Clark, Mary Jo Stevenson, and Ruth Welch; and three brothers, Bill, John, and Claude Hodge.
Surviving are her husband, Eugene Stiles; a daughter, Emogene Stiles of Ellijay, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 16, 2020 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews with the Rev. Steve West officiating. The interment was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roger Stanley, Michael and Phillip Hodge, Shawn Clark, Tony Hall, and Brody Holloway. Bobby Grindstaff served as an honorary pallbearer.

Robert Stiles Jr: Obituary

Robert Stiles Jr., 76, of Andrews passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2020 in an Andrews care facility. He was a native of Cherokee County and a United States Army veteran. He lived in Athens, Georgia for several years before moving back to Cherokee County. Robert worked throughout his life as an over-the-road tractor trailer driver. Robert was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed watching Rev. Charles Stanley on television.
He was the son of the late Robert Thad Sr. and Janie Carroll Stiles and the husband of the late Minnie Allen Stiles and his second wife, Delthia Melton Stiles. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Stiles; six sisters, Ola Pope, Erna Postell, Carolyn Morris, Cleo Dockery, Ruth Ballew, and Pauline Stiles; and three brothers, Frank, Dillard, and Grant Stiles.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Berry of Murphy; two sons, Robert Stiles III of Dalton, Georgia and Rick Stiles of Andrews; a sister, Margie Ashe and husband, Vernon of Locust Grove, Georgia; a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
An inurnment will be in Bellview Community Cemetery at a later date.

Mildred G. Ward, age 100, of Andrews, passed away Friday, January 10, 2020 in a Haywood County care facility. Mildred was a native of Rock Springs, Wyoming. She had lived in Henderson County before moving to Andrews in 1959.
Mildred was a past member of Eastern Star Alpha Chapter #1 in Laramie, Wyoming. She was a member and treasurer for the Connaheta Club in Andrews and was a member of Andrews United Methodist Church.
She was the daughter of the late Franklin Leonard and Elizabeth Thomas Gates and wife of the late Sam Ward, who died January 1, 2014. She was also preceded in death by a son, Douglas Lee Ward. She was the last surviving of her siblings.
Surviving are a daughter in law, Jaimi Ward of Waynesville, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Charlotte Ward; three step-grandchildren, Cade Holsey, Adam Holsey, and Megan McGuinness and husband, Zack; and a great grandson, Scott Thomas McGuinness.
The graveside service and inurnment will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with. Rev. Thomas Jolly and Rev. Mary Brown officiating.

Jeffrey N. “Smurf” Swain, 52, of Murphy, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2020 in an Asheville hospital. He was born in Fulton, County, Georgia, but was raised in Cherokee County where he then lived throughout his life. He was a 1985 graduate of Murphy High School. Jeff had worked for Terminix for 27 years before going to work at John Boy Exterminating for the past four years. Jeff enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, and fishing with his large group of friends. He was a sports fan of all sports and enjoyed the Fantasy Football league. Jeff had coached youth basketball for many years and little league baseball for several years also. He was a member of the Baptist faith.
He was the grandson of the late Guy and Leora McNabb and Pearl and Hattie Jo Swain. He was the son of Joe Neil and Sarah Rose McNabb Swain of Murphy.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his loving wife, Becky of Murphy; three daughters, Ashley Swain of Knoxville, Tennessee, Breanne Swain of Candler, North Carolina, and Bethannie Lennox of Fenton, Michigan; a step daughter, DeEtte Bingham and husband, Thomas of Old Fort, North Carolina; a brother, Greg Swain and wife, Pam of Murphy; two step grandchildren, Michalyn Williams and husband, Bert and Garrett Bingham. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with Revs. Chris West, Aud Brown, and Greg Swain officiating. The interment was in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chad and Daniel McNabb, David and Robert Payne, and Graham and M. Joe Swain. James V. Redmond Jr: Obituary

James V. Redmond Jr., 87, of Warne, North Carolina passed away Sunday, January 5, 2020. He was a native of Indian Mills, West Virginia. He was a 1952 graduate of Peterstown High School in West Virginia. He joined the United States Air Force, working as a radio intercept operator and was a Korean War veteran. Jim worked for Pan American Airlines for 35 years in various management positions until his retirement in 1988. He then worked as an agent with Combined Insurance Company from 1990 to 2012. He was a member of the Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. Jim was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 108 where he served as coordinator.
He was the son of the late James V. Sr. and Mary Kathryn Akers Redmond. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Burke Dillon and Alma Lewis; and a brother, Merle Redmond.
Surviving are his loving wife of 25 years, Betty Jo Redmond; a step-daughter, Deborah Dowdy and Dave Kimbrell of Cumming, Georgia; a step-son, Jeffrey Cheek of Hiawassee, Georgia; a sister, Sue Fink and husband, Bob of Florida; a niece, Kathy Proper and husband, Lance of Millersburg, Ohio; and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2020 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Rev. Dennis Miles officiating. She was born in Buncombe County, NC to the late Julius and Elva Dills Morgan. Angelia was a school teacher. She sang with Voices of Praise and Gospel Harmony Trio. Angelia loved to sing.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Bateman; three brothers, Doyle, Don and Ray Morgan; and four sisters, Christine Mason, Faye Selby, Carmel Cope and Reva May.
She is survived by her brother, Andy Morgan and wife Judy; one sister, Juanita Holden; special niece, Angie Mealer and special nephew, Zach Postell.

Jessie is survived by her sons, William R Hyatt and wife Susie and Daniel M. Hyatt and wife Cindy; daughter, Cathy Stiles and husband William; grandchildren, Katrina Laxton, Kim Burrell, Johnathan Hyatt, Jeremy Hyatt and Ashley Hyatt; and five great-grandchildren.
