Stella Mae Wright Mason: Obituary

Stella Mae Wright Mason, age 92 of Topton, passed away Friday, October 26, 2018 at a Jackson County hospital. She was a native and lifetime resident of Topton. Stella was a life long member of Red Marble Baptist Church. She loved to sing and sang for many years with the Red Marble Quartet and Trio. Stella was also a lifetime Yankees fan and also enjoyed watching Peyton Manning play.
She was the daughter of the late William Rush and Hassie Nichols Wright and the wife of the late Bob Mason, who died April 2, 1983. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Beatrice, Irene, Olive, Lorene, and Betty Lou and three brothers, Jack, John, and Clifton Wright.
Surviving are two daughters, Gaye C. Mathis and husband, Ricky of Topton and Teresa A. Mejia and husband, Chris of Olathe, Kansas; three sons, Hal Mason and wife, Nancy of Garner, North Carolina, Ronnie J. Mason and wife Jennilou of Topton, and Lanny R. Mason and wife Eloise of Topton; nine grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Evelyn Reighard and Debbie Wood for being special caregivers.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Red Marble Baptist Church with Rev. Mickey Stewart and Rev. Donald Colvard officiating. The interment was in Red Marble Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronnie Bateman, Mike Reighard, Roy, Tim, and David Wright, Ricky Postell, and Danny West. Honorary pallbearers were Gene Reighard, Alvin Wright, and Shane Laughter.
The family received friends from 1:00-2:45 p.m. Sunday, October 28th at Red Marble Baptist Church prior to the service.

Cline Hicks, 79, of Hayesville passed away Monday, October 15, 2018 at his residence. He was a native and lifetime resident of Clay County. Cline was a graduate of Hayesville High School class of 1956. He worked in Atlanta briefly before returning to the area. Cline owned and operated Hick’s Service Station for 59 years in downtown Murphy. The service station also served as a local hangout where many good times were had. Cline enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved the outdoors. He was a member of Little Brasstown Baptist Church.
He was the son of the late Harley Robert and Farris Breedlove Hicks. He was also preceded in death by a son, Scott Hicks; and a long-term companion, Debi Brendle.
Surviving are a daughter, Lynn Lowdermilk and husband, Jeff of Asheville, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Shelby Smith of Asheville; four sisters, Doris McCray, Joyce Hogan, and Judy Logan and husband, Clay, all of Hayesville, and Carolyn Dills and husband, Bernell of Duluth, Georgia; a brother, Ray Hicks and wife, Gail of Hayesville; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2018 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating. The interment will be in Fires Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike, Jamie, Luke, and Coy Logan, Roger Gibson, Mark Ritz, Jimmy Robinson, and Roger West. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Phillips, Bill Hughes, Jack Killian, Donald Coleman, Steve Crawford, L.B. Ledford, James Hogan, Ray Morrow, Rubin Blount, Danny Rich, Reggie Pendley, Ricky Cantrell, and all of his friends from Hick’s Service Station.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 Thursday evening, October 25 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

Pearl Chumbley Price: Obituary

Pearl Chumbley Price, 88, of Murphy passed away Friday, October 12, 2018 in a Murphy care facility. She was a native of Cleveland, Ohio and had lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before moving to Murphy in 1974. Pearl worked as a telephone operator for AT&T for several years. She was a member of the Murphy First United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer of the Helping Hands Program and sang in the choir. Pearl was also a member of the Joy Ringers handbell group.
She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Evelyn Cook Chumbley and the wife of the late Zack Stephen Price, who died May 13, 2013.
Surviving are her adopted children, Bob and Theresa Smith of Murphy; three sisters, Evelyn Addison and husband, Lonnie of Palm Bay, Florida, Janet Smith and husband, Robert of Tamarac, Florida, and Lorrain Kinsey and husband, Jerry of Atlantic Beach, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2018 in the Murphy First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wil Posey officiating.

She was a native of Owen County, Indiana and was the daughter of the late Virgil and Kathleen Livengood. She enjoyed playing bingo and traveling. Fay loved spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Parrish; son, Danny Parrish; sister, May Knight and brother, Morris Livengood.
She is survived by her daughter, Grace Blanton and husband David of Murphy; two sisters, Ginny Sutton of Collins, GA and Katie Bright of Guton, GA; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm, Saturday October 20, 2018 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy, NC. Pastor Ricky Lane will officiate.

Mr. John Clayton “JC” Newton, age 74 of Marble, entered his heavenly home on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at his home with his family by his side. Mr. Newton was born August 22, 1944 in Murphy, NC to the late Lester Newton and the late Mary Ann Laney Newton. A member of Tomotla Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Crayton Newton and son, John Brian Newton. In his spare time, JC enjoyed farming, hunting, and going to livestock sales. He was an animal lover and he enjoyed taking them in and caring for them.
Survivors include loving wife of 53 years, Sallie Ruth Newton, son and daughter-in-law, John Steven and Mary Newton, brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Becky Newton, brother and sister-in-law, Therman and Jody Newton, sister and brother-in-law, Verdie and Joe Patterson, sister and brother-in-law, Annie Mae and Bobby Dockery, three grandchildren, Heather Newton, Greg Newton, and Michael Newton, and one great-grandchild, Little John Newton. Also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy with the Rev. Mitchell Totherow officiating. Music provided by Regina Owens Delili and Mary Newton. Interment will follow in the Little Brasstown Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Greg Newton, Michael Newton, Jason Newton, Jack Newton, Bronson Newton, Heather Newton, Marty Cook and Terry Macky. Honorary pallbearer is Jamie Reynolds.

William A. Freeman, Sr., at the age of 84, of Murphy, NC, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, October 7, 2018, at Clay Care Care Center in Hayesville, NC. Mr. Freeman was born October 30, 1933, to the late Alvin E. Freeman and Ada Norris Freeman.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Freeman. They were blessed with a marriage of 66 years. Bill is also survived by his children; son, William Alvin Freeman, Jr., wife, Cathy Freeman, daughter, Robin Freeman McGrew and husband, Tommie McGrew, daughter, Cindy Freeman Shepherd and spouse, Steve Shepherd, Sr., son, Ronney Dale Freeman, Sr. and wife, Patricia Flanagan Freeman, and loving sister, Nadine Freeman Cloer, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Bill was in the Air Force Military for Twenty-two years as a Flight Engineer and also as an instructor for sixteen years at Emory Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was a deacon at Liberty Baptist Church in Murphy, a devoted husband, and father. Bill never met a stranger and his home was always opened to family and friends. He was deeply loved and will be missed by many. His biggest passion was flying and his family.
A celebration of his life will be conveyed to the family and friends at a later date.

She is survived by her brothers, Neal, Lane, Tommy, Robert and Terry Anderson; sister, Peggy Henson; and several nieces and nephews.

Marcella Grant Deal, age 72, of Hickory, formerly of Nantahala, passed away Friday, October 26, 2018 at her residence. She was a native of Macon County, and had lived in Hickory for over forty years. Marcella loved going to flea markets and yard sales. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was the daughter of the late Rev. Clint & Irene Grant and was the wife of the late John Adams and her second husband, Sam Deal. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Jeffrey and Dewayne Adams; and two brothers, Joseph and Jerry Grant.
Surviving are a son, Bobby Joe Adams of Hickory, North Carolina; a sister, Janice Owenby and husband, Darrell of Asheboro, North Carolina; two brothers, Marvin Grant and wife, Linda of Plant City, Florida and Rick Grant and wife, Mary of Trinity, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Pamela Adams, Mitchell Adams, and Brandon Grant; four great grandchildren and many step-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 29, 2018 at the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews with Rev. Daniel Stewart officiating. The interment was in Union Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brad and Brandon Grant, Tristan Smith, Tom Jones, Eric Accosta, and Chris Giddens.

Joe Poteat: Obituary

Joe Poteat, 78, of Murphy passed away Thursday, October 25, 2018 in an Atlanta, Georgia hospital. He was a native of Spindale, North Carolina. Joe served more than 35 years in the United States Coast Guard as a helicopter rescue pilot. He retired from the Coast Guard as a Commander and pilot. Joe moved on to work for the Florida Division of Forestry as a firefighter helicopter pilot. He graduated with a criminal justice degree from Corning Community College in Corning, New York. He was a member of the Cherokee Masonic Lodge No. 146 and the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Murphy. Joe enjoyed boating and eating at Waffle King with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Justin Walter Poteat; his mother, Euzelea “Susie” Northy Groom; his step-father, Lawrence E. Groom Jr.; a sister, Patricia Smith; and a brother, Lawrence E. Groom III.
Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Mary O’Connor Poteat; his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Margaret Cleary Poteat and the extended Cleary family; two sons, Joe Frank Poteat, and Jon Alan Poteat and wife, Denise; a daughter, Paula Marie Poteat, all of Horseheads, New York; a brother, Robert Poteat and wife, Linda of Gilmer, Texas; four granddaughters, Janaye Poteat and fiance, Cody Wall, Danielle Poteat Smith and husband, Stephen, Justine Poteat Schneider and husband, Dan, and Sara Poteat Lowe and husband, Jared; two great grandsons, Camden Joseph Crowley and Thomas Baker-Lowe and a great granddaughter, Evelyn Mare Schneider.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 1, 2018 in Oak Grove Baptist Church, Murphy with the Revs. Ronny Crisp, Randy Johnson, and Gerald Derreberry officiating. The interment was in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Murphy American Legion Post 96, Hayesville VFW Post 6812, and Hayesville American Legion Post 532, and with masonic graveside rites. Pallbearers were Reggie Pendley, Dennis Fetzer, Loye Reid, Jimmy Bailey, Keith Allen, and Jeremy Hall.
The family received friends from 6-8 Wednesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy where the body remained until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

Wynn Anthony Abernathy: Obituary

Wynn Anthony Abernathy, 52, of Murphy passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 16, 2016.
Wynn was born in Murphy, North Carolina on October 3, 1966 to Dr. F.L. (Linford) and Ginger DeWeese Abernathy. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1985. Wynn was an outgoing and friendly person with a loving heart. His most special times were spent with his family and friends. Wynn loved every holiday; planning the celebration and decorating was his fun times.
An avid outdoorsman, Wynn loved fishing, being on the lake and just hanging out with his friends. Another passion was restoring old cars. Wynn always participated in the car shows and traveled to those all over the Eastern United States.
After his graduation, Wynn worked with Steve Forrister and was later employed by Jacky Jones for 20 years in Cleveland, Georgia.
Wynn was preceded in death by his father, Dr. F.L. (Linford) Abernathy; paternal grandparents, “Frosty” and Illma Abernathy; and maternal grandparents, Ralph and Flonnie DeWeese.
Wynn is survived by one daughter, Emma Cowart and husband, Matt of Cleveland, Georgia; his mother, Ginger DeWeese Abernathy; one sister, April Harper and husband, Bill; one nephew, Matthew Harper; and one niece, Isabella Harper, all of Murphy.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 21, 2018 in Murphy First Baptist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Tanner and Fred Lunsford officiating. The inurnment will be at a later date in Moss Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brent Hoover, Richie Hughey, Bill and Matt Harper, Matt Cowart, and Cody Ramey.
The family will receive friends from 2-2:45 Sunday afternoon at the Murphy First Baptist Church prior to the services.

Mrs. Elsie Bruce, age 90, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Ervin Jones and the Late Sarah Trantham Jones. Mrs. Bruce was preceded in death by mother and father, brothers, George Jones and Sherman Jones, sisters, Nora Spurling, Ora Hembree, and Ethel Cross.
