Cherokee County, NC- (Updated 3/20) On March 17th at 5 p.m. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper gave the order that all restaurants and bars were to be closed to sit-down services and open to curbside takeout and delivery only. Since then, many local businesses have followed suite and modified the way that they are operating on a day to day bases, in an effort to help combat the spread of the Coronavirus. Below is a list of businesses in and around Cherokee County and how they will be operating during this time.
GOVERNMENT & PUBLIC SERVICES
The Town of Murphy and The Town of Andrews have declared a State of Emergency as of Friday, March 20, 2020. Curfews have been implemented barring pedestrian traffic within the city limits from 9:00pm to 6:00 am.
Valley River Humane Society- During this time of concern please do not forget about the Animals. Valley River Humane Society Animal Shelter is still open to the public. They are very close to full capacity and have lowered some of the adoption costs hoping to place animals with new families.
John C Campbell Folk School- Suspending all classes, events, dances and concerts until April 18th. EMPTY BOWLS, our annual fundraiser for Cherokee and Clay county food banks (initially scheduled for March 21), has been postponed.
Peachtree Community Center- Grocery bingo at Peachtree Community Club canceled 3/20, 2020. Also the facility is temporarily unavailable for rental until further notice due to federal and state government recommendations.

Murphy and Andrews declare state of emergency, curfew in place
Community, Health, Lifestyle March 20, 2020MURPHY, N.C. – Murphy Mayor David Ramsey and Andrews Mayor James Reid issued a statement officially declaring states of emergencies in their respective towns and instilling curfews for pedestrians.
The Murphy curfew begins a 9 p.m. and extends until 6 a.m, starting on March 20.
The curfew doesn’t apply to employees of businesses that are open to employees or customers of open businesses who are traveling directly to the stores and back to their cars.
Additionally, the curfew order doesn’t apply to occupants in motor vehicles, just pedestrians.
Murphy Mayor David Ramsey
Anyone found in non-compliance with this order “shall be guilty of a Class Three Misdemeanor and subject to imprisonment of up to 20 days or a fine up to $100.00.”
Andrews Curfew
Mayor James Reid of Andrews, N.C. also issued a state of emergency and declared a curfew on pedestrians from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. It begins at 9 p.m. on March 20.
Any pedestrians found in a public area – street, highway, parking lot, or place – can be found in violation of the emergency order and could be “punish[ed with a] Class 2 Misdemeanor, subjecting the violater to up to 60 days imprisonment and/or a $1,000 fine.
The curfew ends with the state of emergency expires.
N.C. declared a state of emergency on March 10, 2020, and on March 17, Gov. Roy Cooper restricted the sale of food and beverages to carry out, drive-thru, and delivery only.
On March 18, Cherokee County, N.C. Health Department confirmed that an individual tested positive for COVID-19 and is isolating in the area.
The individual did attend a contra dance at John C. Campbell Folk School on March 10 and the health department asks anyone who also attended and is showing COVID-19 symptoms to call 837-7486.
Statement from Cherokee County N.C. Board of Commissioners
“During these unprecedented times of COVID-19, better known as the Novel Coronavirus, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners wants to reassure the public that it is committed to the health, welfare and safety of its citizens and visitors. Cherokee County Commissioners have been actively working closely with county administration and public health, the county attorney, public safety personnel and key community partners in an effort to reduce the risk of exposure to, and transmission of, COVID-19. Our staff has been meeting weekly to discuss what measures have been taken, are being taken, and need to be taken by various county departments and organizations, so that we can continue providing essential community services and programs. Daily meetings are occurring to stay abreast of the changes taking place at the state and federal level, and are participating in webinars and conference calls on a daily basis. We are all working toward the ultimate goal of protecting our citizens and visitors.”
Murphy Electric Power Board issues statement

The Murphy Electric Power Board issued a statement Monday, March 16, concerning changes in the way the company functions in light of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak.
“In response to the Coronavirus pandemic Murphy Power Board is taking proactive steps to be sure we are prepared for the local challenges and impacts to our community that may come,” the statement reads. “For that purpose, we must change the way we function temporarily. We will continue to respond to service calls. New electric services will continue to be installed. Outage calls will continue to be taken 24/7 and employees will work to repair lines and restore electric service.”
The statement goes on, “The most notable chance involves the face to face business we do with our customers. The office will temporarily suspend face to face transactions but will be available by telephone to assist you. Payments and business mail normally passed through the window in the office to person can be left in the weekend drop box located at the front entrance or mailed.”
“Please do not leave cash in the outside drop box. Use a money order, check or other method available to you. Recognizing that this event may cause financial hardships we will be working with those impactive to help ease the burden and to provide extra time for recovery. Late payment fees will be waived and disconnections for non-payment/cutoff are currently suspended until May,” the statement concludes.
Murphy/Andrews city halls closed to the public

As of today, Monday, March 16, city hall in both the towns of Murphy and Andrews will be closed to public access due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, according to a press release issued by both cities.
The closure is “in an effort to protect our staff and customers,” according to the statements.
“This is a precautionary measure aimed to protect the community. Please use traditional mail or the utility drop box at city hall for water and sewer payments. Customer can call city hall for inquiries about their bill(s),” the statements read.
For the Town of Murphy, customers are asked to “(p)lease call 828-837-2510, ext 1,” while Andrews customers are asked to call “828-321-5111, ext 1, for questions about your bill(s) and/or avoiding late penalties,” the statements read. Both statements say that the cities “will work with customers to ensure late fees are not imposed as a result of this change.”
The closure of the two city halls will not effect other town services.
“Town administration will continue to keep normal operating hours, and all town services … will continue to be provided to the public as we work with state and local health officials during this time,” the statements continue. “The town is encouraging everyone to call town administration, police, fire, and public works in lieu of face to face visits for all non-emergency questions/concerns during this time as well.”
Additionally, the statements say, “We want to remind folks not to put paper towels or disposable wipes in toilets if they were unable to get toilet paper. It seems silly, but if several customers do that in a short period of time, we will have sewer issues.”
Also closing is the Town of Murphy’s public library, according to a statement from Mayor Rick Ramsey issued Sunday, March 15.
“To be as cautious as possible, and in order to protect our staff and the community, the Town of Murphy will close our library until further notice,” Ramsey said in the statement.
The statement goes on, “As the most visited library in the Nantahala Region, which serves many patrons in the demographic identified by public health officials as high risk, we must act proactively.”
Ramsey stated the Town is “working with Nantahala Regional partners to implement drive-by services during this period of closure.”
The statement concludes, “We want to emphasize that the closure is for precautionary reasons only, in order to protect our staff and patrons.”

Lady Bulldogs punch ticket to state title game

The Murphy Lady Bulldogs are headed to the NCHSAA Class 1-A state title game after a narrow, 63-62, win against Mitchell in the Western Regional Championship game Saturday, March 7, in Hickory. With the win, the top-seeded Lady Bulldogs (30-0) will face off with third-seeded Weldon (27-1) for the championship Saturday, March 14, at Reynolds Coliseum at North Carolina State University. Tip-off for the game is slated for 12:05 p.m.

Despite a 40-27 lead at halftime, and pretty much dominating the whole first half of basketball, Murphy allowed Mitchell to claw their way back into the game in the third. Heading into the fourth, Mitchell cut the Bulldogs lead to 52-41.
Thanks to some very stingy defense, they were able to force three turnovers in the final 25 seconds and put senior Hannah McMahan at the line with .02 seconds left in the game, down 63-61. McMahan was able to nail the first free throw, but with the pressure mounting she missed the second and Murphy escaped with the win.
Murphy showed some signs of panic late in the Regional final game, but thanks to leaders like senior Sydni Addison they were able to compose themselves enough to walk away with another mark in the win column.
Addison finished the game leading her team with 23 points. Torin Rogers was also a vocal leader during the game and filled up the stat sheet to back it up, dropping 16 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.

Lady Bulldogs track team takes second in meet

The Murphy Lady Bulldogs track team placed second Wednesday, March 5, at home, in the first meet of the season, with 82 points.
Union Co. won the meet with 93 points, while Andrews was third (63 points), Hiwassee Dam was fourth (40 points), and Tri-County Early College was fifth with 19 points.
In the 100-meter dash, Grace Nelson took first place with a time of 13.6, while in the 4X200 meter relay, the team of Faith Ann Revis, Bianca White, Kia Guerrero, and Lauren Pendley placed first with a time of 1 minute, 57.3 seconds.
Revis, Guerrero, Olivia Payne, and Grace Nelson teamed up to take first in the 4X100 meter relay for the Lady Bulldogs with a time of 54.6 seconds.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Georjah Allen took the top spot with a time of 53.7 seconds.
The team of Allen, Revis, White, and Pendley placed first in the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 4:41.9.
In the discus, Candace Dockery placed first with a throw of 82 feet, 2 inches, while Riley Dockery was third at 64 feet, 5 inches.
In the 4X800 meter relay, the team of Allen, Dakota Hogeback, Madison Worley, and Gracey Henry placed second with a time of 11:50.2, while the team of Jennifer Hernandez, Grace Hill, Adalynn Hall, and Ashlyn Stroupe was third at 13:46.3.

In the shot put, Jersey Schwalm was second with a throw of 29 feet, 9.5 inches, while Candace Dockery was third with a toss of 29 feet, 3 inches.
Murphy Bulldogs track team takes first place

The Murphy Bulldogs track team took first place in the first meet of the season Wednesday, March 4, at home.
The Bulldogs scored 151.5 points to take the top spot against Union Co. (93 points), Andrews (47.5 points), and Tri-County Early College (5 points).
In the 4X800 meter relay, the team of Andrew Bryson, Caleb Jones, Hunter Harris, and Chase Pierce placed first with a time of 8 minutes, 50.9 seconds.
The team of Richard Ly, Caleb Rice, Clayton Laney, and Christian Tighe placed second in the event with a time of 9:57.6.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Juan Allen was first at 19.3 seconds, with Austin Woody in second at 19.6.
Chandler Wood took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.4 seconds, while Ryland Dickey was third at 12.1 seconds.
The team of Juan Allen, Justice Dorsey, Dalton Moore, and Davonte Murray placed third in the 4X200 meter relay.
In the 1,600-meter run, Andrew Bryson was first at 5:22.5, while Caleb Rice was second at 5:23.
In the 4X100-meter relay, the team of Dorsey, Murray, Wood, and Dickey placed second with a time of 46.8 seconds.
Moore placed third in the 400 with a time of 55.7 seconds, while Woody placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.6 seconds.
The Bulldogs swept the top two spots in the 800, with Chase Pierce in first at 2:14.7 and Hunter Harris in second at 2:15.9.

In the 3,200-meter run, Ly placed first with a time of 11:38.6, while Jones was second at 11:39.9.
Hodge, Moore, Pierce, and Harris combined to take second place in the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 3:52.7.
In the discus, Dallas Rayburn took first with a throw of 127 feet, 2 inches, while Colby Stalcup was third with a throw of 93 feet, 2 inches.
Rashad Davis took first place in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 4 inches, while Kyle Willard was third at 34 feet, 5.5 inches.
Hunter Laney won the high jump with a height of 5-foot-6, while Dorsey was second at the same height on more attempts for the Bulldogs.
Lady Bulldogs stay perfect, advance to semis

It was another packed house Tuesday, March 4, as the Lady Bulldogs tipped-off the state quarterfinal game against the East Surry Lady Cardinals. The same East Surry team that this time last year ended Murphy’s state championship dreams with a last second 3-pointer.
Sophomore Torin Rogers takes a free throw Tuesday night. Rogers finished the night with 27 points.
It was the Lady Bulldogs (29-0) that got the last laugh this year however, beating the Lady Cardinals 65-45 and advancing to the NCHSAA Class 1-A state semifinals.
East Surry (20-6) started the game with a strong defense, forcing Murphy into some bad shots and creating turnovers, which allowed them to take a 21-19 first-quarter lead.
Settling down in the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs were able to lock in defensively and rely on senior Sydni Addison to create some open looks on offense. The result was a three-point lead for Murphy, 31-28, at the end of the first half.

Coming out of the locker room for the second half, the Lady Bulldogs settled in and started looking more like themselves, sharing the ball and playing a much tighter brand of defense than they were able to in the first half. Murphy ended the third quarter on a five-point run, giving them a 48-39 lead to start the fourth.
Despite some turnovers on offense, the Lady Bulldogs blew the game open in the fourth using a defense that held the Lady Cardinals to just six four-quarter points to seal the 65-45 victory.
Division-I prospect, sophomore Torin Rogers, was the focal point of the offense all night for the Lady Bulldogs. She scored a game-high 27 points while going a 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
In a game where offense seemed hard to come by at times, Rogers did not shy away from the challenge when she was asked to step up and be the leader, creating open looks for herself and teammates alike.
Murphy will travel to Lenior-Rhyne University this Saturday, March 7, for the NCHSAA Class 1-A Western Regional Championship game, which will be played against the winner of Wednesday’s Mitchell vs. Alleghany game.

Saturday, Feb. 29, the Murphy Lady Bulldogs and the Cherokee Lady Braves played in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 at Murphy High School in the third round of the NCHSAA 1-A state playoffs. Sophomore forward

Torin Rogers returned to the lineup after missing the previous playoff game with an ankle injury. Rogers didn’t miss a beat, putting up 14 points in the Lady Bulldogs 63-44 route of the Lady Braves.

Murphy (28-0) started the game off hot, as senior Sarah Pullium got the team on the right track with eight first-quarter points. Pullium’s push helped the Lady Bulldogs jump out to a 20-6 lead. In the second, Rogers built onto the lead with six points in the quarter, padding Murphy’s lead to 36-14.
Senior Sydni Addison was the leading scorer for the day with 20 points, including two deep 3-pointers in the third quarter that helped the Lady Bulldogs build a 22-point lead heading into the fourth. The final quarter concluded without many fireworks from either side and the game ended just as it began, with Murphy in control.
This was the fourth time that these two rivals had the opportunity to face off this year and the Lady Bulldogs definitely got the best of the Lady Braves, walking away from all four games with a victory.
Tuesday night, March 3, at 6 p.m., Murphy will host East Surry in the quarterfinals of the NCHSAA 1-A state playoffs. Murphy will have revenge on the brain coming into this one against a Lady Cardinals team that knocked them out of the state playoffs in the semi-finals last year at Lenior-Rhyne University, on a last second 3-pointer.

Thursday night, Feb. 27, the undefeated Murphy Lady Bulldogs tipped off against the Union Academy Lady Cardinals in the second round of the Class 1-A NCHSAA state playoffs.

the opening tip of the first-round playoff game against the Pine Lake Prep Pride. However, much like the first-round game, the Lady Bulldogs were able to take this one easily from the Lady Cardinals, 61-36.
Things were tight at the end of the first quarter as the Lady Bulldogs led 17-8, but they were able to stretch the lead to 15 going in to halftime, 31-16. Murphy came out of the locker room hot and shut Union Academy down, which enabled them to pull away and close out the game with ease, saving any late game theatrics for a later date.
Murphy will face Big Smoky Mountain Conference rival Cherokee in the third round of the NCHSAA 1-A state playoffs at home Saturday, Feb. 29.
