Betty Jo Hughes Wilson, age 84 of Murphy, NC passed away Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Murphy Rehab & Nursing.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late Clingman and Hattie Bishop Hughes. Betty worked for Gold Kist Manufacturing. She was avid reader. Betty loved her grandchildren and kids. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Wilson; two brothers, Herman and Robert Hughes and one grandchild.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Wilson and wife Roseitta and Bobby Wilson; one daughter, Barbara Bell and husband Lawrence; two sisters, Anna Margaret Arrant and Stilla Louise Carter; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 pm, Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the Murphy Free Methodist Church. Ricky and Richard Wilson will conduct the service.

June 18, 1946 – January 29, 2019

Jim M. Williams, age 72 of Brasstown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at his home. Jim was born June 18, 1946 in Columbus, OH to the late Ralph and Dorothy Williams, he was Methodist in faith and served his country bravely during the Vietnam War, enlisting in the US Navy. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed working on his hot rod and he worked as a bartender at Harrah’s Valley River Casino. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jerry Allen.

Survivors include wife, Brenda Jellel Williams, one son, Brian James Williams, one daughter, Christina (Curt) Parrish, sister, Nancy Allen, brother, Dean Williams and five grandchildren.

Irvin James Chambers age 90 of Cornelia, Georgia and formerly of Murphy passed away January 23, 2019 at the Life Care Center of Copper Basin in Ducktown, TN.

He was a native of Cherokee County and the son of the late James Marion and Mattie Weeks Chambers. Irvin was a retired barber and was a US Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, Irvin was preceded in death by his wife Mary Mills Chambers who passed away December 31, 2018; two brothers, Roy Chambers and Henry; five sisters, Forrest Whitener, Georgia Mae Deal, Maddie Bryant, Lydia Bryson and Edith Carringer.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm, Sunday, January 27, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Dr. Eddis Dockery will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC. Pallbearers will be Bradley Hurlburt, Millard Hurlburt, Jason Hughes, Ethan Hughes, Justin Hedden and Tanner Creelman.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 pm, Sunday, January 27, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.

Tony Coffey, age 56 of Hayesville, NC passed away Sunday, January 6, 2018 at the Clay County Care Center.

He was born in Cherokee County, NC to the late Luther Dale and Beverly Iris Brown Coffey. Tony was a salesman.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Steve Coffey.

He is survived by two brothers, Brian Coffey and wife Kimberly and Tim Coffey; five nieces, one great-niece, five great-nephews and several Aunts and Uncles.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 pm, Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Speakers will be Ed Callais, Johnny Moore and Tim Coffey. He was born in Swain County, NC to the late Joseph Fred and Nellie Hall Jones. He had worked in auto parts and for the ABC store in Murphy, NC. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and riding his lawn mower.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Jones.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Brooks Jones; daughter, Tammy Jones of Dothan, AL; grandchildren, Matthew May and wife Skye and Jordan Hand and wife Molly; great-grandchildren, Landon May, Dakota Arrow May and Mary Ellis Hand.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Bo Phillips will officiate. Rev.  Everett Horace Morrow, age 87, of Murphy went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 2, 2018 at his home. He was a native of Cherokee County and the son of the late Simon Peter and Donnie Baker Morrow. He was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church. Preaching was Everett’s passion. He began preaching 45 years ago and pastored many different churches in the area.       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Morrow; son, Michael Scott Morrow; two brothers, Hobert and Harford Morrow and sister, Lucille Ware.       He is survived by his son, Bruce Morrow of Murphy, daughter, Sharon Brown and husband Dennis of Harrison, TN; brother Attlee Morrow and wife Barbara of Murphy; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.       Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Wednesday December 5, 2018 at  Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Maggie Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Tony Ware will officiate. LOCAL MAN SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX CRIME

Murphy, NC— On December 04th, 2018 Barry Wade Allen, of Murphy North Carolina was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of a minimum term of 17 months to a maximum term of 35 months with 427 days credit for his plea of guilty to the charge of Indecent Liberties with a Child announced Sheriff Derrick Palmer of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. The Honorable Superior Court Judge William H. Coward ordered Allen to register as a sex offender for a period of 30 years and to have no contact with the victim for a lifetime. In June of 2017 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a report of suspected sexual assault committed by Allen. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the HAVEN Child Advocacy Center.

The case was presented to the Grand Jury which met in July 2017 who returned true bills of indictment for Statutory Sex Offense with a Child greater than 13 years of age and defendant 6 years or more older, and Indecent Liberties with a Child.

Allen fled from Cherokee County prior to the true bills being issued. The United States Marshal Fugitive Apprehension Unit assisted in locating and apprehending Allen in Louisiana during the last week of September 2017. Allen waived extradition and returned to Cherokee
County.

Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “These are difficult and trying cases on all concerned. This is an excellent example of how working as a team involving HAVEN Child Advocacy Center, the District Attorney’s Office and utilizing our Federal partners helped bring this case to court.”

Helen Lois Ledford Kerrigan, age 63, of Hayesville, NC passed away Friday, March 8, 2019 in Buncombe County, NC.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, NC and the daughter of the late Ralph and Geneva Patterson Ledford. Helen’s passion was cooking. She had cooked for several restaurants and organizations.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Kendall Barnett and the love of her life, Newton Forrester.

She is survived by her children, Mendy Sanchez and Benny, Jonathan Forrester and Chris and Jason Forrester; her siblings, Virginia Monkus and Owen, Betty Ledford, Debbie Eller and Steve and David Ledford; grandchildren, Devin Conatser, Austin Conatser, Marcus Forrester and Emerson Forrester.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville. Rev. Clark Moss will officiate. It is with great sadness that the family of Jennifer Justice Raeburn, age 48, announces her passing after a long illness on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Cartersville Medical Center.

Jennifer was born October 31, 1970 in Austell, GA and grew up in Marietta, GA. She graduated with honors from Sprayberry High School in Marietta and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Georgia Tech. She later held management positions with several communications companies in Indiana, before returning to Georgia to take a position with an investment company as an Investment Analyst. Jennifer lived in Smyrna, GA for the last several years.

In her high school years, Jennifer was an all-star softball player in a competitive recreational league in Marietta. Jennifer was an avid reader from an early age, loved music, and socializing with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling and had visited 48 of 50 states.

Jennifer will be lovingly remembered by her father and stepmother, Wayne and Susie Justice of Warne, NC; mother, Carol Mann of Young Harris, GA; one brother, Matt Justice (Meredith) of Hayesville, NC; niece, Audrey Justice of Young Harris, GA; one step-sister, Bethany McClurkan (Robert) of Canton, GA and their children, Cassidy and Houston; and one step-brother, Kevin Shackelford.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville. Pastor Jerry Helton will officiate.

Sandra Beverly Taylor Dockery, age 59 of Murphy, NC passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late Basscomb and Hattie Martin Taylor. Sandra was a self-employed logger. She loved to eat, enjoyed gardening, canning, reading and lying in the sun. Sandra also enjoyed hunting bears and hogs. She loved spending time with her family. Sandra was a member of Hanging Dog Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Taylor, Leon Taylor and Alvin Taylor; and one sister, Janet Lance.

She is survived by her husband, Loren Dockery; one son, Cleaston Jeffrey Dockery of Murphy, NC; one brother, Basscomb Taylor Jr.; seven sisters, Kathryn Rogers, Rebecca Graves, Margie Taylor, Jodi Alverson, Dolly Lynetta Iles, Claudia Trotter and Madlyn Wallace; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry C. Shelton

At 7:30 pm, January 2, 2019, Larry C. Shelton of Hayesville, NC passed away peacefully in the North East Georgia Medical Center after a short illness.

He was a native of Hayesville, NC and the son of the late Grady and Beatrice York Shelton. Larry was drafted into the Army right out of high school where he served a one year tour in Vietnam. He loved his country and was proud to serve. His first job was as a hard rock driller on Franklin Mountain and his last job was the NC Department of Transportation, and many other jobs in between.

He was all about family. Larry loved fly fishing and quite time on the river. He was a guitar picker and singer of songs; he loved country and country gospel songs especially Merle Haggard. Larry was an easy-going mild manner man with an awesome sense of humor which earned him much love and respect for his family and friends. His motto was “keep on picking”.

Larry was a member of the Fires Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Roach Shelton; one daughter, Candy Kirby and husband Benny of Hayesville; one son, Clancy Shelton and wife Brinita of Murphy; one grandson, Bronson Kirby of Hayesville; one granddaughter, Fionnah Hallgren Shelton of Murphy; mother-in-law, Christine Roach of Hayesville; brother-in-law, Johnny Roach and wife Joan of the Peachtree community; sister-in-law, Gail Lands and husband Tony of Hayesville; nephew, Cordell Lands; niece, Haley Evans Jones; Aunts, Nell Norton and Wanda Shelton both of Lake Toxaway, NC; Uncle, Johnny Shelton and wife Louise of Hayesville; and many cousins and friends which he loved dearly.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 am Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the Fires Creek Baptist Church in Hayesville. Rev. Mark Laney and Rev. Dallas Crowder will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC. Pallbearers will be Jason Shelton, Warren Shelton, Timmy Shelton, B.J. Shelton, Steven R. Shelton and Dexter Shelton.

Mr. Bryant Jackson, age 75, of Andrews, NC, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018, at his home. Mr. Jackson was born August 29, 1943, in Marion, NC. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of New Life Baptist Church in Hayesville, NC, enjoyed the outdoors, yard work, sitting on his porch watching the birds, and working crossword puzzles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Nichols Jackson.
He is survived by his daughter, Lynette (Butch) Hooper, and his sons, Steve (April) Jackson, and Ronnie (Heather) Jackson, brother, Fred Jackson, sisters, Nancy Hardin, Mary Beth Killian, Trudy Moss, and Kay Jackson, grandchildren, Lee Ann Wells, Noah Jackson, and Adam Jackson, and one great-grandchild, Lyn Leigh Wells.
