Pair charged with trafficking in methamphetamine
Police & Government March 2, 2018MURPHY, N.C. — Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the March 1, 2018, arrest of 33-year-old Jennifer Renee Ploof, of Rome, Georgia, and 41-year-old Dustin Eugene Mcclure, of Marble, North Carolina, for charges involving the trafficking of methamphetamine.
On March 1, 2018, a K-9 deputy with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office while on patrol observed the vehicle Ploof and Mcclure were occupying, was speeding and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to immediately stop, at which time another deputy arrived to assist with the stop. While deputies were attempting to stop the vehicle, the passenger was observed throwing a plastic bag from the window.
Once the vehicle was stopped and upon approaching the vehicle, the deputies observed a crystalline substance on the passenger. The deputies also recovered the plastic bag thrown from the vehicle, which contained a quantity of a crystalline substance. Both the substance on the passenger and from the bag recovered were tested and produced a positive result for methamphetamine. An additional amount of crystalline substance was recovered from the floor and door of the vehicle, along with digital scales. Approximately 34 grams, or a little over 1 ounce, of methamphetamine was seized during the arrest.
Jennifer Renee Ploof was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center for TRAFFIC IN METHAMPHETAMINE, MAINTAIN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, and POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. She was released after making a $25,000 secure bond. She has a March 6, 2018, District Court date.
Dustin Eugene Mcclure was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center and remains under a $25,000 secure bond for TRAFFIC IN METHAMPHETAMINE, MAINTAIN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, and POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. Mcclure has a March 6, 2018, court date.
Sheriff Palmer stated, “Another battle won in our war on drugs in Cherokee County. What was taken off the street today potentially cost these dealers a little over $3,000, but the amount is immeasurable when looking at the potential lives that could be saved.”

Man who “sextorted” 12-year-old Girl Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence

MAN WHO “SEXTORTED” 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL RECEIVES
10-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE
ATLANTA – Gerardo Perez Uribe has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for coercing a minor girl in North Carolina to produce child pornography of herself and send it to him over the Internet.
“‘Sextortion’ is a growing problem on social media sites,” said U. S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak. “Our office along with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners encourage parents to help us target those who seek to prey on children by watching what your children are doing on the Internet, and who they are communicating with. Most children do not understand the dangers that may lurk on the Internet, and can easily fall victim to predators like Uribe.”
“Social media sites are a convenient way for young children to network with their friends and family, but unfortunately, they also make children easy targets for online predators like Uribe,” said David J. LeValley, Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta Field Office. “Our Crimes Against Children unit is dedicated to weeding out sexual predators who troll the internet for unsuspecting children. They can’t do it alone and that’s why it is so important for parents to educate their children and monitor their activities on social media sites.”
According to U.S. Attorney Pak, the charges and other information presented in court: In the summer of 2014, Perez Uribe met a 12-year-old girl on Facebook. He first told her that he was 13-years-old but later claimed to be 25-years-old. He asked the girl to send him nude images of herself, and she did. After receiving the images in August 2014, Perez Uribe took over the girl’s Facebook account, changed her password, and locked her out of the account. He then threatened to post the girl’s nude images on her Facebook page if she refused to send him more nude photos of herself. The victim believed Perez Uribe’s threat and sent him four photographs of herself that met the federal definition of child pornography. The girl’s parents discovered the crime and reported the incident to the Cabarrus County (North Carolina) Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office investigated the case and then referred the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation once Perez Uribe was located in Georgia.
Gerardo Perez Uribe, 32, of Rex, Georgia, was sentenced to 10 years in prison to be followed by 10 years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty on August 24, 2017. He was born in Mexico but was living in the United States as a permanent resident. He will be deported to Mexico after he completes his prison sentence.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Cabarrus County (North Carolina) Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul R. Jones and Mary Webb prosecuted the case.

Sex Offender Charged For Living too Close to School

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced that March 15th, 2018 arrest of 37 year old Adrian Montez Austin, of Andrews North Carolina for violations of the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry.
On March 1st of this year a complaint was made with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office that Austin had established a residence the complainant felt was too close to the High School in Andrews North Carolina.
Deputies with the Patrol Division and Investigations Division worked together and were able to obtain evidence that Austin had established a residence approximately 290 feet from the Andrews High School, as well as moving from Clay County and failing to notify of his new address.
During the investigation information was discovered that indicated that Austin was involved in the illegal sale of controlled substances and had possibly involved young teen age juvenile females.
Austin was arrested at his Andrews North Carolina residence and incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center for 2 counts of Violation of the North Carolina General Statutes pertaining to the Sex Offender Registry. He is currently under a $15,000.00 secure bond and has a March 27th, 2018 court date.
Austin’s arrest was part of Operation Southern Impact II where a total of 76 people were arrested, and 13 children were rescued or identified as victims during a mutually coordinated operation between eight southeastern states. The joint, proactive event, Operation Southern Impact II, was coordinated by nine Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces in those eight states and focused on persons who possess and distribute child pornography and those who are sexually exploiting children in other ways using technology and the internet.
Sheriff Palmer stated “As you can see this is just one of the reasons that we are so diligent in our monitoring of Sex Offenders and why we have partnered with our State and Federal Partners to keep our innocents safe.”

Murphy Lady Bulldogs await first round results

After winning the Smoky Mountain Conference and defeating Cherokee for the Region Championship Friday night at Murphy High School, the Lady Bulldogs are victims of a “hurry up and wait” situation. They’ve tip-toed the sideline of perfection this season, suffering only one loss in conference play to the Braves, whom they beat 2-out-of-3 meetings this year.
The Lady Dawgs only other loss came all the way back on November 25, 2017 when they fell by 10 to the Cougars of Mountain Heritage (Burnsville, NC) in the Coaches vs Cancer tournament. If you’re wondering where Mountain Heritage is, shift your focus to how good they are; 23-1, 11-0 at the time of this article and ranked 203rd in the United States (8th overall in the state of North Carolina regardless of classification). They’re alright. I mean, if you’re into teams that win and all that.
Which brings us to present-day basketball, where the Lady Dawgs are stuck behind the fictional chain-link fence like a kennel of Blue Ticks waiting for a full moon.

The Lady Bulldogs are one of eight teams who have earned a first-round bye as the NCHSAA State Basketball Playoffs begin on Tuesday. Pine Lake Prep (14) will host East Surry (16) for Tuesday’s first round games, with Murphy taking on the winner in round two Thursday afternoon.
Pine Lake Preparatory School of Mooresville, NC has had an impressive season thus far, boasting a 10-2 conference record while going 18-8 overall. Competing in the PAC-7 1A conference, their two conference losses came by the hands of Union Academy (23-2, 13-0) of Monroe; and both games were decided by fewer than 10 points.
East Surry (13-12, 7-3) looks to be the underdog in the first round, barely breaking .500 on the season. The Cardinals out of Pilot Mountain finished 3rd in the 1A Northwest Conference, behind Mount Airy (22-2, 10-0) and Bishop McGuinness (15-11, 7-3).

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the June 14th, 2018 arrest of 36 year old Stephen Louis Weston, a Murphy North Carolina man on numerous charges for violations of the North Carolina Controlled Substance Act.
On June 7, 2018 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit received information from the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway Drug Task Force that Weston was a target of an ongoing investigation in which Weston was suspect in the sale and delivery of controlled substances. That information provided by the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway Drug Task Force enabled members of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit and the Murphy Police Department to conduct a search of the residence of Stephen Louis Weston located at 43A Tennessee Street. During the search of the residence, over 4 ounces of Cocaine, approximately 21 grams of Methamphetamine, 5 ounces of Marijuana, Diazepam, and MDMA (Ecstacy) pills were seized. Weston, at the time, was incarcerated in Georgia on narcotic related charges.
On June 14th, 2018 members of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit received information that Weston was vacating his residence on Tennessee Street. After setting up surveillance a traffic stop on the U Haul vehicle that Weston was operating was made to make the arrest of Weston. During a search incident to arrest of Weston’s person and in the vehicle he was operating located several Hydrocodone tablets and marijuana residue.
Weston was arrested and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $105,000.00 secure bond for the following charges: POSS W/I MANUF/SELL/DEL SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, MAINTAIN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, FELONY POSSESSION MARIJUANA, TRAFFICKING IN COCAINE, POSS W/I MANUF/SELL/DEL SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSS W/I MANUF/SELL/DEL SCHEDULE VI CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, SIMPLE POSSESSION SCHEDULE IV. Weston is expected to be in Cherokee County District Court on June 26th, 2018.
Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “We appreciate the useful information from the Georgia Task Force that enabled us to get a good sized amount of drugs off the street.”

Tennessee fugitive arrested following chase

MURPHY, N.C. — Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the April 25, 2018, arrest of Mason Kelly Nykolajcuyk, a 26-year-old Bradley County, Tennessee, fugitive who was captured following a lengthy chase in and around Murphy, North Carolina, during the noon-time hour.
A little after 11:30 a.m. April 25, 2018, Lt. Wood with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division spotted a vehicle matching the description of a wanted vehicle, which had been involved in an incident in Polk County, Tennessee, the previous day during which a Polk County Deputy was stabbed. At the time, the vehicle was just west of Murphy on U.S. Hwy. 64 and headed west.
As Lt. Wood began following the vehicle to make an investigative stop, the vehicle pulled off the side of the road and then fled back east. During the chase, the vehicle reached speeds above 80 mph often times in crowded business areas as well as in residential areas, which included an elementary school. Additionally, the driver was driving erratically, which included driving in the east bound lane of U.S. Hwy. 19 near the Murphy High School into oncoming traffic, and at times almost struck pedestrians in the area as well as striking two law enforcement vehicles and attempting to strike other law enforcement vehicles.
At one point in the chase, a unit from Murphy Police Department set up and deployed stop sticks, which damaged one or two of the vehicle’s tires; however, Nykolajcuyk continued his high speed flight. Shortly after Nykolajcuyk entered a small two-lane road in the Texana Community of Cherokee County, Lt. Wood was able to utilize a pit maneuver to disable the vehicle, at which time Nykolajcuyk was captured.
Nykolajcuyk is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center. Nykolajcuyk is charged with Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest, Felony Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Possession of a Stolen Motor Vechile. Nykolajcuyk is currently under a $100,000 secure bond and has a hold placed on him for pending out of state charges.
Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated, “Outstanding work and cooperation bringing a very dangerous situation to a safe closure. We appreciate the cooperation of Murphy Police Department.”
