Murphy woman charged with felon child abuse

MURPHY, N.C.- Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced that on Nov. 20, 2017, Lilyaunna Helene Kiff-Hall, 17, of Murphy, North Carolina, was arrested for charges involving injuries to an infant.
On or about Nov. 15, 2017, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a physician at T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, who stated that earlier in the day an infant was flown from the Martins Creek community in Cherokee County to their hospital as the child was experiencing breathing issues. The physician further explained that after examining the infant, there were injuries that were consistent with child abuse. The information provided was given to Investigators with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Cherokee County Department of Social Services.
Upon receiving the information, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office commenced an investigation that included search warrants for the residence of the infant. During the search, items of evidence were collected, which included at least one cellular device.
Kiff-Hall was arrested at the Cherokee County Detention Center on Nov. 20, 2017, and presented to the North Carolina Magistrate who set a $50,000 secure bond for felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. Kiff-Hall is expected to be in Cherokee County District Court Dec. 5, 2017, at 9 a.m.
Sheriff Palmer stated, “This is a very sad situation, especially this time of the year. We appreciate the cooperative effort of the Cherokee County Department of Social Services who are partnering with us. Our investigation is far from over, and we expect additional charges as we progress.”

JASPER, GA- 48 seconds into the game, Murphy Bulldogs quarterback Joey Curry hits Micah Nelson for a 48-yard touchdown pass. “Miss Automatic” Katelyn Jones kicks the extra point, and that put the Bulldogs up early 7-0.
Slade McTaggert came ready to play, intercepting the Falcons on their opening drive for a 20-yard pick 6 for another Murphy Bulldogs touchdown. Jones PAT is good, to put the Bulldogs up 14-0 in the first quarter.
Still in the first quarter of play, Curry throws touchdown number two connecting with Devonte Murray on a 16-yard touchdown pass, adding to their first quarter lead. PAT is good. 21-0 with over 7 minutes to go in the first quarter.
The unstoppable force known as KJ Allen “Bulldogs” his way down the field for an impressive 49-yard touchdown run. Jones is again successful on the extra point, adding to their already impressive lead. At the end of the 1st quarter 28-0 Bulldogs.
On the other side of the ball, McTaggart showing he can play offense, breaking away for a 45-yard dash down the field for another Murphy Bulldogs touchdown. The extra point was no good, giving us a 34-0 score with plenty of time left in the second quarter.
Murray adds to his touchdown total for the night with a turbo boosted gallop into the endzone from 18 yards out. Extra point is good by Jones, Murphy Bulldogs 41, North Georgia Falcons 0 just before the half.
#48 Kyle Wright came out with an unmatched tenacity, and it showed on a 5-yard power run for the game’s final score. Jones was successful on the extra point, and that would be all folks. Final score of this one, Murphy Bulldogs 48, North Georgia Falcons 0.
What the scoreboard doesn’t show is the heart of the Falcons players, coaches, and their fans. They never gave up, they kept on fighting until the end. Late in the fourth quarter they successfully executed a 40-yard fake field goal attempt that resulted in a 1st and 10 inside the Bulldogs redzone.

LAS VEGAS, N.V. – Saturday had a consistent line-up of competitive fights, and title bouts. There were questionable knockouts and debatable referee decisions. Overall I believe it was worth the money.
The first contest between Tabiti and Cunningham resulted in a unanimous decision in favor of Tabiti. Tabiti connected with 31% of jabs thrown, and 49% of his power punches landed him the victory. Cunningham only connected on 28% of his jabs thrown, and a mere 27% of his power punches.
The WBA Light Heavyweight Championship Belt was on the line in the second fight of the PPV event. Pitting the 
Champion Nathan Clearly against top contender Badou Jack. In this fight Jack “clearly” had the upper hand, and was ready to take it to the Champ.
Beaten and bleeding, the referee stopped the fight, and Jack was awarded with a technical knockout and the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship. Clearly was not happy with the referee’s decision, and proceeded to argue his case to no prevail.
Now the third fight of the night had some weird occurrences, first the IBF Junior Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis did not make weight, and in doing so forfeit his title. Now because Davis did not make weight, the contender Francisco Fonseca, could still claim the title with a victory. However if Davis won, he would still have forfeit the title.
Now fast forward to the end of this fight, Davis ends up landing an illegal back of the head punch that sent Fonseca to the canvas. Fonseca, when down on his knees, proceeded to hold onto Davis’ legs, Davis then pushed Fonseca down to the mat. Fonseca decided to milk the illegal punch by staying down, clinching both gloves over the back of his head. All the while, the referee had already begun his 10 count.
The end result of this fight was Davis winning by knockout, and a puzzled Fonseca left to ponder his first professional loss.
The main event was nothing short of exciting. This was history in the making, a MMA fighter crossing over to fight, not only a boxer, but arguably one of the sport’s greatest boxers of all time.
McGregor obviously had a height and reach advantage over Mayweather. McGregor’s fighting style even seemed to cause Mayweather some problems at first. I have never seen Mayweather really be the aggressor before, and that might have given McGregor something to think about during the battle.
Ultimately Mayweather’s stamina and experience as a boxer is what was the deciding factor leading to the 10th round decision to stop the fight , and crown Mayweather as the victorious warrior. Mayweather declared that this was his final fight, retiring with an impressive 50-0 record.

13th Annual Scott Hogsed Youth Conservation and Education Day to be held August 26, 2017

CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C.- The Annual Scott Hogsed Youth Conservation and Education Day will be held on August 26, 2017 on Caddyshack Road in Brasstown, NC. This event is hosted by the NC Cooperative Extension 4-H Program, and is intended to educate children on outdoor activities. All youth ages 5-18 are welcome to attend this free event with a parental chaperone. Please preregister at http://www.scotthogsedyouthday.com/p/blog-page.html. Gates open at 7:30 a.m., the opening ceremony is at 8:30 a.m., and event booths open at 9 a.m.
Jeff Johnson and Gary Jones will be featured presenters this year. Jeff will present the younger children with his dogs and instruction on small game birds. Gary will present the older youth with a lesson in taxidermy. The National Guard will also offer a climbing wall and low ropes course. A free, wild game lunch will also be provided. Each child who attends will receive a free t-shirt and a goody bag and a chance to win some great prizes.
This day originated with some hunters, anglers and youth group leaders, deciding to organize an event that would get kids away from video games and television and show them the beauty and opportunities of the outdoors. The first Annual Youth Conservation and Education Day was held in 2005, to honor Scott Hogsed. Scott was an enthusiastic, energetic 14-year-old who spent as much time as he could hunting and fishing. He lost his life in a vehicle accident returning from a camping trip in 1984.
Each year, the event honors a different youth who loved the outdoors. This year’s event honors Shannon Christy, extreme kayaker and outdoor enthusiast. Shannon was from Andrews, NC, and died in 2013, at 23, doing what she loved the most, kayaking. She loved to fish and spend time with her family, but most of all she loved kayaking. She could light up a room with her smile.

The Great Andrews’ Total Solar Eclipse
Solar Eclipse, State & National July 23, 2017ANDREWS, N.C.- The Great American Solar Eclipse, also known as a Total Solar Eclipse is coming only to the United States of America August 21st 2017. Falling on a Monday, the eclipse will peak at approximately 2:35pm EST. Andrews, N.C. will see the longest duration of totality in Cherokee County, N.C. with an estimated 2 minutes and 39 seconds of totality. Totality is the moment or duration of total obscuration of the sun or moon during an eclipse.

Town of Andrews have reserved extra shuttle buses, are equipping its parking lots and Heritage Park with 100 port-a-potties, and will have all staff available to provide security for expensive equipment being brought in from 60 different domestic telescope groups from all over the country.

Cherokee County has collected its highest percentage ever of Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes for fiscal year 2016-2017

DOWNTOWN MURPHY, Cherokee Co, N.C.- Ending in June 2017, Cherokee County collected 97.49% of outstanding, current real estate and personal property taxes for the fiscal year 2016-2017. Evelyn Postell, Tax Collector Department Head, stated at the July 17, 2017, Cherokee County Board of Commissioners (BOC) meeting, “it’s the highest percentage we’ve ever had in Cherokee County.” The item was approved by the board with no one opposed.
As the 2nd new item of business at the meeting, the BOC approved (as required by law) the tax collector to collect taxes charged in the tax records. Dr. Dan Eichenbaum, Chairman of the BOC, quipped, “Go get ’em.”

Cherokee County Board of Commissioners meeting hosts Public Safety Hearing regarding solar eclipse event 2017

Murphy,Cherokee Co, N.C.- On Monday, July 17, 2017, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners hosted a Public Safety Hearing regarding the upcoming total solar eclipse happening on Aug. 21, 2017. Representatives from several agencies presented, and offered the public a lot of worthwhile information. Robin Caldwell, Emergency Management Director for the county, delivered a presentation of slides ranging from general eclipse information to how emergency management, law enforcement, and government agencies are preparing for the event. The eclipse event itself will last only about 2 1/2 minutes (during totality, when the moon will completely cover the sun from our perspective), but changes could begin to be seen as early as 10 am. Totality is expected to begin at 2:35 PM. The longest duration of totality will be visible from Andrews, but in Murphy it will only be less visible by about 4 seconds.
The county is expecting anywhere from 10,000 to 75,000 visitors beginning to enter slowly about a week before Aug. 21, but the majority of the migration in will begin Friday, peaking on the day of from surrounding metropolitan areas within 2 or 3 hours. Already, all the accommodations in the county are sold out, and residents are beginning to rent out pastures and rooms in their homes. Cherokee County Public Schools and county offices will be closed on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017.
The county is planning to need many additional resources to accommodate this influx of visitors to the county. They are in communication with outside counties in case of need of extra manpower, light up message boards for traffic, light towers, additional handheld radios for communication, etc. County Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) will be activated to coordinate local emergency personnel and resources.

Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer spoke at length regarding the event. While trying not to incite panic in local citizens, he does warn that this event would be best treated as a winter storm, where one should stock up on necessary resources way in advance to avoid possible shortages, and to stay home to view the event safely from your home where you are able to protect your property. He pointed out that many visitors may get lost trying to find designated viewing areas, or may inadvertently trespass while trying to find a good vantage point from which to view the eclipse. He urges locals to be patient with visitors/trespassers, and attempt to be neighborly and sociable, and if you do not want visitors in your pasture or driveway to kindly request for them to leave. At all costs, avoid altercations, but to make note of tag numbers or other important information to report to law enforcement. That said, he also stated that depending on traffic conditions and hierarchy of need, smaller trespassing violations may not be able to be serviced. Not to scare us, but that the event will be drawing a large number of people to public places, which invites the possibility of tragedies such as a terrorist attack or plane crash or fire. We must be cognizant of these possibilities, and be aware that response time may be longer than normal. He hopes that the real danger of the event will only be tempers flaring and the expected anger that may occur sitting in gridlock in 90 degree temperatures. Also, expect people to stop driving or walking as the totality occurs, even on the 4 lane. Parking on the shoulder (only if you are well off the roadway and not blocking traffic) will be allowed on the 4 lane. Do not park on the median.

As in any emergency situation, it is best to stay informed and Caldwell reminded the citizens of the county that there is a new reverse 911 system in place in Cherokee County and to sign up for alerts at either nixle.com or on the Cherokee county website. You choose whether you want a phone call alert or a text alert (text 888777 and type your zip code in the subject line). She stated that Codered is not the latest emergency communication system.
