MURPHY, N.C. – Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating suspect  Josh Hampton.

He’s wanted on several felony charges for breaking and entering and larceny.

Andrews man arrested in connection to catalytic converter theft

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the May 19, 2021 arrest of 30-year-old, Caine Tyler Burnette, of Andrews, North Carolina for charges stemming from an investigation into the theft of catalytic converters in Murphy, North Carolina.
On May 7, 2021, The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received reports of larceny at a business. Caine Tyler Burnette was later identified as a suspect in the theft of the catalytic converters from multiple vehicles located at that business.
On May 19, Burnette was observed in the vehicle used at the time of the theft. A traffic stop was initiated and Burnette was taken into custody.
Caine Tyler Burnette was arrested for: Felony injury to property obtaining non-Ferris metal, Felony Larceny, Felony Larceny of motor vehicle parts, and First-degree trespass. Burnette is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center under a $250.00 secure bond for charges stemming from Graham County. He was given a $10,000.00 unsecure bond for the charges stemming from this arrest. He is expected in Cherokee County District Court on May 27, 2021 at 9 am.
Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “We continue to work these cases and we appreciate the help of the community and ask for their continued cooperation. As always we continue to be the Cherokee County Team.”

Murphy man arrested in rape investigation

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced on June 11, 2020 arrest of 19-year-old Nickolas Ghannon Carter of Murphy, N.C. for an alleged sexual assault.

In mid-November 2019, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a 13-year-old female had been sexually assaulted by an 18-year-old male. The report further alleged that the 18-year-old male had used methamphetamine to facilitate the sexual assault.

Detectives with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into the allegations which included the assistance of the HAVEN Child Advocacy Center in Murphy, NC. At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was presented to the grand jury which issued the bills of indictment.

Nickolas Ghannon Carter was arrested on 6/11/2020 and taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center where he was served with indictments for Second Degree Forcible Rape and Statutory Sexual Offense with a Person Less than 15 years of age. The North Carolina Magistrate set a $600,000.00 secure bond. Carter is presently in the custody of the Cherokee County Detention Center awaiting a 08/03/2020 Superior Court date.

Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “I want to commend the deputies and detectives on this arrest. They were diligent and pursued the investigation to its conclusion. As you see it takes teamwork to facilitate these investigations and we thank HAVAN CAC for their invaluable assistance. Because of the age of the victim and the nature of the assault we do not anticipate any future press releases concerning this matter.”
