MURPHY, NC – The third annual Red, White, and Brew event will be held on Saturday, July 3 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tennessee Street.

The Independence Day Celebration offers something for all ages and features local food, beer, and art. Live music plays all afternoon with talent from Western North Carolina. In the middle of the event, a veteran’s presentation will take place to honor those who fought for their country.

A fireworks show will take place later that evening at 9:30 p.m. in Konehete Park.

MURPHY, N.C. – Murphy’s changing up its Independence Day event in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and extension of Phase 2 reopening plan.

Anyone attending the show is encouraged to remain in their car and pedestrian viewers should avoid gathering in groups larger than 25 people and wear a face covering that meets CDC guidelines. The fireworks show will take place closer to Murphy High School, not Konehete Park, in an effort to prevent large gatherings. The modified plan also avoids street closures.

Fireworks will be visible from Valley Village Shopping Center, Lowe’s and Ingles parking lots. The show will begin at dark. The rain date will be on Monday, July 6.

The downtown parade and day-time activities at Konehete Park are canceled, but the park will remain open.

The town of Murphy asks that everyone follow Gov. Roy Cooper’s executive orders and practice social distancing, avoid large gatherings, and wear a face mask. Please contact 828-837-2510, ext. 4 for additional questions.

While the changes might not be ideal, Murphy looks forward to continuing its tradition of celebrating the nation’s independence.

LOCAL SHERIFF OFFERS TIPS FOR A SAFE JULY 4TH

With the approach of the July 4th Holiday, Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer asks all citizens to join him in making this Fourth of July holiday period a happy and enjoyable one for all.

Traditionally during the July 4th Holiday, our highways experience one of the highest traffic flows of the year.  The Sheriff reminds all Cherokee County residents to follow these safety tips:

  • Always shift your attention every few seconds, constantly scanning the road ahead and behind you. Never blankly stare ahead nor fix your gaze on one point on the road.
  • When passing an automobile, always glance at the ground beside the front wheel of the car you intend to pass. You will know instantly if the car is about to veer – giving you an extra few seconds to respond.
  • You should pull out into the opposite lane of traffic when passing while you are still well behind the car in front. This should give you some time and space to build up speed and will enable you to pull back into your own lane should the need arise.  Never cut abruptly out of your lane into the opposite lane when passing.
  • Always signal your intentions with your brake lights, turn signals, horn and/or headlights so that other drivers will see you well before you change course.
  • Drivers should always “aim high” in steering. That is, you should glance frequently at points well ahead of you.  Not only will this help your steering, but it will also help you check the position of vehicles in front of you as well as on-coming ones.
  • Never follow too close. Remember that, as your speed increases, it takes you substantially longer to stop.  Also remember that it’s good to have an extra cushion of space in front of you if you’re being tail-gated, on a slippery road, or in low visibility conditions.

“Lastly, I would remind all motorists to practice the Golden Rule when driving.  Be courteous and tolerant of other drivers.  Please don’t get angry with bad drivers or reckless ones – just get out of their way,” Sheriff Palmer said in closing, “Let’s make this summer a safe one on the roads in Cherokee County.”

Cherokee County citizens should remember that fireworks, as enjoyable as they are to watch, can be dangerous and should only be handled by professionals.  According to the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission, there are nearly 9,000 emergency room-treated injuries associated with fireworks a year. You can enjoy a safe Fourth of July by following these safety tips:

  • Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging.
  • Keep a supply of water close-by as a precaution.
  • Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.
  • Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.”
  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
  • Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
  • Stay at least 500 feet away from professional fireworks displays.
  • Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks.

Sheriff Palmer also wants citizens to use caution when swimming at a beach or at a pool.  Sheriff Palmer said, “Sadly, most deaths from drowning occur within a few feet of safety.” The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around the water is to learn to swim. The Red Cross has swimming courses for people of any age and swimming ability. To find out where lessons are offered, or to enroll in a CPR/AED or first aid course, contact your local Red Cross chapter.

At a swimming pool, take the following precautions:

  • If no lifeguard is on duty, do not let children swim unless they are accompanied by a responsible adult who knows lifesaving techniques and first aid.
  • Post CPR instructions and directions to call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number in the pool area.
  • Look around the pool area to be certain lifesaving devices are readily available for emergency use.
  • Be sure covers are installed on all drains of a swimming pool or in a wading pool. The suction created by the pool’s circulating pumps can be very dangerous unless it is reduced by covers.
  • Take frequent breaks (about once an hour) where everyone gets out of the water, drinks water, reapplies sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) and rests.
  • If a child is missing, check the pool first. Go to the edge of the pool and scan the entire pool, bottom, and surface, as well as the surrounding pool area.
  • To reduce the risk of eye, ear, nose or throat infection from contaminated water, swim only in pools in which water quality is properly maintained. The water should appear crystal clear, be continuously circulated and be maintained at a level that allows free overflow into the gutter or skimmer. There should not be a strong odor of ammonia or chlorine.

At the beach, take the following precautions:

  • Swim in a supervised, marked area with a lifeguard present, and swim with others. Never swim alone.
  • If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Once you are free, turn and swim toward shore. If you can’t swim to the shore, float or tread water until you are free of the rip current and then head toward shore.
  • Watch out for the “dangerous too’s” – too tired, too cold, too far from safety, too much sun, too much strenuous activity.
  • Look for water that is reasonably clear and free of floating materials and odors. Avoid swimming at beaches where there are large populations of ducks, geese or gulls. The waste produced by these birds causes high bacteria levels in the water.
  • Look for movement in the water; it helps keep the water clean. Do not swim in stagnant or still water.
  • Do not swim at any beach right after a heavy rain. Runoff following a heavy rain may result in a high bacteria level.
  • When diving at a beach, exercise extreme caution. Beach water is not as clear as water in a pool, so underwater obstructions may not be visible.
  • Avoid having beach water in your mouth or nose.

Sheriff Palmer said, “Following these precautions will help the children and citizens of Cherokee County stay safe and healthy this holiday weekend and throughout the summer.”

Independence Day, Can We Keep It?

As Americans, we see that the focus of the rising tempo of incivility in our public discourse has moved from politics to issues of culture and we must ask why? Well, it’s because for America, the political arguments have already been settled although one side won’t admit it. It’s settled because of our Constitution which gives us our inalienable rights. The defense of that document has risen exponentially to the assault on it. 

The great struggle now, between constitutionalists and the marxists has morphed into the cultural arena that avoids the distasteful facts of logic, truths and law, those trivial little items that impede their move to socialism. Its tenants, protected by “political correctness,” allows PC proponents to range widely in their destructive process of changing America’s culture, if not its laws, before the people could catch on. It almost worked, then along came Trump!

Political Correctness is the hand-maiden of diversity, multiculturalism, socialism, fascism and communism. It is the vehicle used to change our cultural norms. For example, once, the  important emphasis taught in school was on the proper use of the English language. After the Civil Rights law era, It was abandoned as a requirement specifically because of diversity, inclusiveness and multiculturalism. Some couldn’t or wouldn’t understand it. Today, our language is a mishmash of Babel. That’s only one aspect of the Lefts hidden attack on Americas exceptionalism. If they can’t read or write, they’re going nowhere. That applies to all races.

Political correctness requires no authority. it survives on the precept of exclusion and fear. It exists solely on what “group think” determines to be correct and uses the power of the mob, whether its the media or the Hollywood Leftists, or the street thugs like Antifa and BLM, to challenge, almost daily, our Presidents authority. It is this fear that keeps us everyday, working class Americans in check because our side doesn’t do what they do. We are constitutionalists and expect the rule of law to function. We relay on debate and persuasion to make our choices and we are not prepared, yet, to bash heads

For the Left, political correctness denies the “free exercise clause” unless it’s for them alone. That requires disciplined adherence to group think or blind allegiance, and to disagree with them, is to invite the wrath of the Lefts public approbation like the rejection Kayne West is now experiencing for his apostasy. 

The theater of the street, now extended into the dining rooms of public restaurants, has become the stage for the Lefts threatening noisy attacks on constitutionality and civility. Screaming over the objections of others and drowning out other opinions is the Lefts only way to stay relevant. They intend to paralyze the process by division and political polarization and until Trump, they were succeeding. That being the case, how does the once successful union of American politics and culture survive in the future? Apparently it won’t. The Left is engaged in an all or nothing battle to kill our independence and move us into the common ranks of a one world government.

To be in politics is because those are paying jobs, even if it costs more to get the job then the job pays. There’s a contradiction there, surely? But, with the job however, comes the reward of legitimate authority, until the next election. Since the authority gifted by elections is essential to the Lefts agenda, they will take all steps necessary to ensure the Left does not lose those elections. So far, it’s not workings quite well as as they had hoped. It’s our Independence day, not theirs. So enjoy it. It’s Independence Day, not July 4th. Let’s try to keep it.

Remember, Freedom is the goal, the Constitution is the way. Now, go get ‘em!

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
