James Edward “Ed” Cloud Jr., 60, of Murphy passed away Thursday, August 1, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was a native of Sikeston, Missouri, but lived most of his life in New Orleans, Louisiana before moving to Murphy in 2005. Ed was in the United States Navy serving as Lee Helmsman on the USS Nimitz on her maiden voyage. Ed was currently working at Harrah’s Valley River Casino as a table games dealer. He had worked for many years as a disc jockey with WCVP and WCNG 25 and disc jockeyed for many weddings and events.

He was the son of Jean Glass Cloud and the late James Edward Cloud Sr. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Roger Alan Cloud.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his loving wife of 27 years, Terri Hill Cloud; a daughter, Denae Cloud and fiancé, Bryan Meadows of Cullowhee, North Carolina; a son, Spencer Cloud and fiancé, Hailey Hollifield of Claremont, North Carolina; a sister, Debi Witt and husband, Larry of Harrisburg, Arkansas; and a nephew, Jeremy Witt.

Beatrice Babcock Van Nostrand, 97, of Murphy, passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, after a period of declining health.

She was born in Glen Cove, NY, to the late Carl John and Anna Sjodahl Hagstrom. She was preceded in death by husbands, Eugene Babcock and George Van Nostrand, son, James (Jim) Babcock and daughter, Linda McGrady.

Beatrice loved taking care of her family and was blessed to do so for several generations. She enjoyed working with her flowers which grew beautifully under her loving care. She also worked as a Ward Secretary at both District Memorial Hospital and Murphy Medical Center.

Surviving are a son, Eugene (Chuck) Babcock and wife Barbara, 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 17, 2019, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home from 3 pm to 4:30 pm with a private graveside services following at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Rev. Rondall Brown will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Eugene Babcock, Van Babcock, Robert (Mickey) McGrady, Jason McGrady, Shawn McGrady and Keith Whitener.

Kendall Richard Adams, age 94 of Gastonia, NC passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019.

He was born in Cherokee County, NC to the late Frank and Mabel Adams. Kendall retired from the United States Air Force; he served during WWII. He co-founded VFW Chapter 7620 and was Past Adjutant from 1985 to 1986. Kendall was an active D.A.V. member. He volunteered his time to many organizations. Kendall was very active in politics and supporting campaigns.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Vincent, Edwin, Jerry, Leon, Bobby, Billy and Harry Adams.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Josephine Pendergrass Adams; one son, Kendall Adams, Jr. and wife Melinda of Gastonia, NC; one daughter, Stacey Gibby and husband Lennox of Gastonia, NC; one brother, Ray Adams and wife Imogene of Andrews, NC; seven grandchildren, Wesley Gibby and wife Lauren, Jennifer Grant and husband Mike, Amanda Britt, Jessica Adams, Dana Adams, Crystal Drawdy and Kim Laye; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Monday, August 5, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Rev. Jerry Tatham will officiate. Burial will be in the Moss Cemetery with military graveside rites being conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC.

The family will receive friends from 12-2 pm, Monday, August 5, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews.

Kathryn Winkler Rogers, age 67 of Murphy passed away unexpectedly Wednesday May 8, 2019. Kathryn was born in Guilford County, NC to the late Dennis and Virginia Eaton Winkler. Kathryn enjoyed painting and loved all pets, especially Ginger, her shitzu.

Services will be held at 4:00pm, Saturday May 11, 2019 at Shepherd of the Mountain Church in Murphy. Rev. Chris West will officiate.

She is survived by her son, William Yarborough, his wife, Kimberly and their daughter, Cassidy of Mount Pleasant, SC and sister, Denise Hall of Raleigh, NC.

Glenda Ilene Willis, age 87, long time resident of Michigan, Murphy, NC, and Fairview, NC, died Tuesday the 7th of May in Fairview, NC.

She was born 8-20-1931 in Converse, Indiana to Victor and Cora Dill DeFord. Glenda graduated high school and attended one year of nursing school. Glenda was a very hard working homemaker most of her life. First husband was Herman Baunack (deceased) with 3 children: Kathy, Jack (deceased) and Bill. Second husband was Jack Willis (deceased) who came into the marriage with 3 children: Terry, Dale and Robin. Glenda has 12 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

She volunteered for years at Fleshers Nursing Home, Fairview Food Pantry, etc.

Funeral services will be held at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel at 138 Peachtree Street, Murphy, NC on Saturday, May 11 with visitation at 1 PM and services at 2 PM. Weather permitting; there will be a short graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens after the service. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Salvation Army.

She was born in Polk County, TN. Bethany had worked most of her life in the restaurant industry.

Bethany is survived by her parents, Jimmy Morrow and wife Janet of Murphy and Connie Burt and husband John of Myrtle Beach, SC; one son, Clayton Walls; one daughter, Katherine Morrow; two brothers, Adam Hughes and Jason Morrow; step grandparents, Avarum and Kathryn Rosenberg; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The Woody family announces Celebration of Life Services for Mildred Janie Nichols Woody, age 79 of Hayesville, NC who went to be with Jesus on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Born in Hiawassee, Georgia on September 15, 1939 to her late parents Lawrence McKinley Nichols and Bessie Shook Nichols, Mildred was married to her best friend and sweetheart of 63 years Walter Woody. She was a member of Downing’s Creek Baptist Church in Hayesville and loved teaching God’s word to the little children in Vacation Bible School. She also loved sewing, gardening and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mildred, a devoted wife and loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother committed her life to serving others. She chose the profession of Homemaker so that she could give one hundred percent of herself to her family. She was always available to provide loving care 24 hours a day and through her constant sacrifice was the perfect example of unconditional love. Even as she courageously fought through the ravages of congestive heart failure, she was always more concerned about others than herself. Her strength and courage were an inspiration to all.

Mildred is survived by her devoted husband: Walter Lee Woody, and loving sons and daughters: Preston Woody and wife Debbie; Janie Carpenter and husband Rod McDonald; Lisa Phillips and husband Dwayne; Mark Woody and wife Miranda; Walt Woody and wife Tressa; and Trent Woody and wife Alicia; adoring grandchildren: Aleesha Dunham and husband Matthew; Blake Phillips and wife Julia; Spencer Woody, Hailey Woody, Jeremy Woody, Taylor Woody and wife Caitlyn; Luke Woody, Heather Woody Nichols and husband Randy and Genesis Woody. Precious great grandchildren: Kaden and Kelsey Phillips, Weston and Quinn Dunham, Jensen Nichols, Cash and Birdie Woody, and Lake Woody. She is survived by loving brothers, Ralph Nichols, sister-in-law, Ramona Nichols, Willard Nichols, sister-in-law, Toni Nichols and was blessed to have many other nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, May 8th, 2019 at 1 p.m. at First Free Will Baptist Church in Hayesville, NC. Rev. Chris Rumfelt will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the graveside service in the church fellowship hall. Pallbearers will be Blake Philllips, Luke Woody, Spencer Woody, Taylor Woody, Matthew Dunhan and Thomas Dixon. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Rogers, Larry Swanson, Heather Woody Nichols, Hailey Woody and Randy Nichols.

Anna Mae Patton, age 76, of Hayesville, NC passed away Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Murphy Rehab and Nursing Home.

She was a native of Towns County, GA but lived her entire life in Clay County. She was the daughter of the late Garten and Flo Gribble Chastain Allen. Anna was a homemaker. She loved gardening, quilting and visiting with others. Anna was a member of the Sweetwater Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Ralph Patton; one infant son, Benjamin Patton; two brothers, Jack Allen and Isaac Allen.

She is survived by one son, David Patton and wife Terry of Hayesville, NC; two daughters, Patricia Wells and Judy Gentle and husband Scott of Hayesville, NC; one sister, Susie Owens; grandchildren, McKensie Gentle and wife Amanda, Ryan Gentle, Megan Gentle, Spence Gentle and Levi Gentle; great-grandchildren, Kalab, Cristina, Amelia, Toby, Henry, and Andy Gentle; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville. Rev. Kyle Cody and Rev. Wayne Matheson will officiate. Patricia Ann McCoy, age 56 of Andrews, NC passed away Thursday, May 2, 2019 in Asheville, NC.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late James Horace Dockery and Eloise Dockery of Andrews, NC. Patricia worked for McDonald’s as a cook. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a children’s Sunday school teacher.

In addition to her father she was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Scotty Dockery.

In addition to her mother she is survived by one sister, Juanita Walsh and husband Riley.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Pastor Allen Kea will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was the son of Patrick Dean Ausburn and Patricia Marie Hall Ausburn. He was a student at Hiwassee Dam High School. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed many adventures.

Nathan was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Cynthia Diane Vickery.

In addition to his parents, Nathan is survived by 3 brothers, Joseph Hall of Plant City, FL, Juan Colunga Jr. of Irving, TX and Jacob Dean Ausburn of the home; paternal grandparents, Tommy and Abel Holland of Murphy and, baby niece, Rayann Kashmir Colunga.

Paul David Parsons, age 61 of the Nantahala community passed away from natural causes on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at his residence. He was the son of Reginald and Jean Parsons.  Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. He was of the baptist faith and a member of South Tampa Fellowship Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Marianne Parsons, daughters, Caroline and Miranda Parsons and his beloved mountain dog, Wobbegong.

Geraldine Gibson Lominac, 83, of Murphy passed away Monday, July 22, 2019 at Stonehenge Assisted Living in Blairsville, Georgia. Geraldine was born April 21, 1936 to the late Newton Gibson and Edith Anderson Gibson, fondly referred to as one of the “Gibson Girls.”

She was the wife of the late Paul F. Lominac Jr., who passed away in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, John and Herbert Gibson; sister, Christine Stovall; and sister-in-law, Marie Whitlow.

Geraldine was a 1954 graduate of Murphy High School and continued to have contact with several of her classmates who celebrated their 65th anniversary this year.

She was a gifted seamstress, artist, gardener, and jeweler with a smile to light up the room having been blessed with charm and beauty, a former Burley Tobacco Queen. Her talents were shared with many friends and family.

A lifetime member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, she sang in the choir, was active in WMU, and served as president of the cemetery committee organizing yard sales and fund raisers. She was also a member of the Andrews Garden Club.

Her professional career included owning her own boutique in Copperhill, Tennessee Gerry’s Dress Shop and Andrews Jewelers, Andrews, North Carolina until her retirement in 1991.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Barry Watson of Murphy; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Shannon Curtis Lominac of Sylva, North Carolina; sisters, Kathleen McGuire of Blairsville, Georgia, Madelyn (Curtis) Chambers of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jane (Tom) Stiles of Hiwassee Dam, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Helen Gibson, Nell Gibson, Mackie (Dale) Garland, and Irene (Jim) Carnes; grandchildren, Emily Watson, Matthew (Kayla) Watson, Lauren (Skyler) Hubbard, and Cody and Caleb Lominac; great-grandchildren, Laylan and William Watson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2019 in the Shady Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Gerald Derreberry and Richard Mashburn officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Matthew Watson, Cody and Caleb Lominac, Skyler Hubbard, Vaughn Gibson, Kurt Stiles, and Jeff Chambers.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 Thursday evening, July 25, 2019 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy where the body will be until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

Diane Moylan Crawford, 80, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2019 in an Andrews care center. She was a native of Birmingham, Alabama and also lived in Cherokee County at several times in her life. Diane worked as a hotel manager and lived in several other states while working. She enjoyed reading, also drawing and was a talented artist. Diane loved her dogs and sitting outside enjoying the mountain views. She was of the Catholic faith.

She was the daughter of the late Milton C. and Ruth Gulledge Moylan.

Surviving are a daughter, Ruth Limon and husband, Larry of Murphy; a son, James Hallmark of Birmingham, Alabama; a sister, Catherine Ledbettter of Birmingham; three grandchildren, Charles Towles and wife, Alicia, James King and wife, Jessica, and Elizabeth King; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Martha Anne “Scottie” Rogers Saltz: Obituary

Martha Anne “Scottie” Rogers Saltz, 84, of Hayesville was welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Monday, July 22, 2019 and reunited with her late daughter, Terri Saltz, who passed away on November 13, 1983.

She was a native and lifetime resident of the Tusquittee Community in Hayesville, North Carolina which she loved and cherished.

Scottie was a career educator and devoted child advocate with Clay County Schools. Scottie was much more than simply a teacher to her students. She impacted many young lives with her kind, caring heart and generosity. She was affectionately known as “angel” to many students and colleagues.

Scottie was renowned for her cooking and baking, and had virtually branded her “Scottie Cakes” and cornbread.

She was a lifelong member of Truett Memorial First Baptist Church.

Scottie was a nurturing caregiver to many friends and family. Her children and grandchildren were her heart and joy.

She was the daughter of the late William Clay Rogers and Mabel Jones Rogers Padgett. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Teresa Ann Saltz; a sister, Marilou Ginn; and a son-in-law, Tommy Cheek.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 68 years, James Russell Saltz Sr.; three daughters, Melissa Saltz Cheek of Hayesville, Cindi Saltz Simmons and husband, Si of Webster, North Carolina, and Amy Saltz Brodhage and husband, Mark of Arab, Alabama; a son, James Russell “Jim” Saltz Jr. of Hayesville; a brother, William J. “Bill” Rogers of Raleigh, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Jordan Leigh Cheek, SFC Thomas Lee Cheek II and wife, Heather, Jackson Brett Simmons and wife, Nicole, Craig Forest Brodhage, and Elizabeth Anne Brodhage; three great-grandchildren, Thomas Lee Cheek III, Taylor James Cheek, and Hailee Marie Cheek; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Truett Memorial First Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Foster officiating. The interment will be in Rogers Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Si Simmons, Mark Brodhage, SFC Thomas Cheek, Jackson Simmons, Craig Brodhage, Wayne Rogers, Jeff Ginn, and David Rogers.

David H. Miller: Obituary

David H. Miller, 75, of Murphy passed away Friday, July 19, 2019 in a Murphy hospital. He was a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. David previously lived and worked in California, where he loved to go hunting and fishing. He also loved to travel to France and Spain and went swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. He was not only a good story teller, but he was a good writer. David was devoted to his brother, Richard.

Surviving are a son, Daniel Miller of Paris, France; and a brother, Richard Miller of Andrews.
