Roy Dale Long, age 88, of Hayesville, NC passed away Saturday, October 26, 2019 surrounded by family.
Dale, most commonly known as Daddy, Pa Pa, and Pappy, spent his entire life focused on spreading love to all that met him. He was at complete piece when producing magic through his woodworking talents. Dale made sure to pass down his love for family and God’s wondrous creations to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The world is a little darker now that he is no longer with us so it is up to all of us to carry on in his absence and represent him as he would expect.
Dale was born to the late Buford and Donnie Maney Long on April 19, 1931 in Rainbow Springs, NC. He proudly served in the Army and was a Korean War era veteran.
In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by brothers, Paul B, James, Billy and R.L. Long; and sister, Eula Mae Long.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Willa Mae Long; brother, Robert Long; three children, Roger (Peggy) Long, Arlene (Mike) Hall and Richard (Linda) Long; seven grandchildren, Phillip “Barney” (Vanity) Hall, Kelly (Jamie) Davis, Connie (Lamar) Schandera, Karla (Roger) Miller, Jennifer (Scott) Baugh, Joseph (Rosa) Potts and Anita (Jake) Sieg. 19 great-grandchildren; Zakaree Evans, Kala Schandera, Taylor Hall, Joshua VanLandingham, Trey Hall, Jay Baugh, Maggie Schandera, Trae Miller, Levi Miller, Cody Baugh, Brady Hall, Riley Baugh, Tyler Hilton, Andrew Miller, Delaney Hilton, Wayne Davis, Olivia Potts, Hailey Ratliff and Gabby Ratliff; two great-great-grandchildren, Karen Hester and Adalynn Ratiff; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Friday, November 1, 2019 at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Hayesville. Rev. Clark Moss will officiate. Full military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC.
The family will receive friends from 12- 2 pm at the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Brenda Cherylene Nichols, age 71 of Lilburn, GA passed away Sunday, October 27, 2019.
She was born in Andrews, NC to the late Richard and Artie Moss Wilson. Brenda was a homemaker. She was a member of Marble Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Garrett.
She is survived by her husband, Ray Nichols; one son, Doug Nichols and wife Allison of Loganville, GA; one sister, Christine Parker; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Elizabeth Nichols.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Aud Brown will officiate. Burial will be in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery # 2 in Mineral Bluff, GA.

Barbara “Bobbie” Pachy: Obituary

Barbara “Bobbie” Pachy, 79, of Hayesville passed away Friday, October 25, 2019 in Clay County Care Center. She was a native of Unionville, Michigan and graduated from Unionville High School. She had worked most of her life as a real estate agent and was licensed in both Michigan and Florida. She moved to Naples Florida in 1987 and finally retiring to Hayesville in 2004. Bobbie was a member of Oak Forest United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Women’s Methodist Union. Bobbie was a 42year member and past Madam President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Harrison, Michigan. She enjoyed arts and crafts as well as working in the yard and caring for animals. Barbara was an avid senior softball player, while living in Florida.
She was the daughter of the late Lester and Alyee Hovey Bosley. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Curtis Frazier; and several sisters.
Surviving are her husband of 31 years, Julius Pachy of Hayesville; a daughter, Quinn Betts and husband, Craig; three sons, Shannon Frazier, Brian Pachy, and Julis Pachy, III; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
No services are planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in loving memory of Barbara Pachy to the Oak Forest United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 295, Hayesville, NC 28904.
The family wishes to thank the staff of both Clay County Care Center and Good Shepherd Hospice for the care they gave to Bobbie.

Grace Elaine Skojac: Obituary

Grace Elaine Skojac, age 81, of Murphy, passed away Friday, October 25, 2019 at her residence. She was born in Sample, Kentucky to the late Alberta and John Corley. She was a long-time employee of RCA record company in Indianapolis, Indiana where she worked from 1956 to 1985. Grace re-located and resided in Asheville, North Carolina in 1985 with her family until 1995. In 1995, Grace and her husband Dan, retired and re-located to Murphy where they owned and operated Mountain View Marina in Bear Paw until 2000. She was an avid reader of God’s word and active member of St. Williams Catholic Church.
Grace’s life was marked by sacrifice and giving of herself, her faith, and devotion to God, and lovingly serving her family. She will be sorely missed and never forgotten.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Anthony Absher, who died in 1985, and her Aunt Grace, who died in 1991.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Dan Skojac of Murphy; a daughter, Christy Russell and her husband, Andy; a son, Danny Skojac and wife, Stephanie; two step-daughters, Debbie Skojac- Hagewood and her husband, Steve and Joni Williams and her husband, Steve; a beloved sister, Barbara Corley Burns; ten grandchildren, Nathan, Ben, Kayla, Hannah, Madeline, Jesse, Daniel, Ethan, Anthony, and Sadie and two great grandchildren, Knox and Miles.
A memorial service will be held at St. Williams Catholic Church and announced at a later date.

Betty Coffey: Obituary
Obituaries October 27, 2019Betty Coffey, age 83 of Marble passed away Friday, October 25, 2019 at Valley View Care Center in Andrews.
She was the daughter of the late Henry and Griffie Truett. Betty enjoyed cooking and canning and worked as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Andrews First Baptist Church.
Betty is survived by her husband, Giles Coffey; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Lori Coffey; brother, Goldie Truett; grandchildren, Dan Coffey and wife Stephanie and Beth Kinzly and husband Chad; and great-grandchildren, Truett and Loc Coffey.
Funeral services will be held at 3 pm, Sunday, October 27, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Rev. Al Hood and Pastor Harold Stiles will officiate. Music will be provided by Harry and Katie Gilbert. Burial will be in Maltby Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Keith Wood, Eddie Wood, Eddie Hoilman, Jeff Mashburn, John Kilpatrick and Micthell Arrowwood.

CONCERNING THE TOWN OF MURPHY, FROM RICK RAMSEY, MAYOR OF THE TOWN OF MURPHY, N.C., ISSUED OCTOBER 14:
“The Welcome to Murphy sign at McDonalds has served our town with dignity and class for many years. As planned, the sign must come down as part of the new highway project.
Our intent is to replace the sign with a new design that is dignified but also is as noticeable and inviting as possible to persuade visitors to make the turn and explore Murphy.
While there are several ways to enter downtown Murphy from the bypass, it is Hiwassee Street that is the gateway into our amazing town. We have a vision of the end results.
We have received rave review on the “ground up lighting” into the Bradford Pear trees from the Baptist Church to the historic L&N Depot.
We have cleared the brush along the boat ramp, which provides a beautiful view of the Hiwassee River as you enter town.
We have upgraded the trash receptacles at the boat ramp, and we really appreciate everyone who is supporting this by not littering or attempting to leave household garbage at this location.
We have night lighting that highlights the Depot.
We have more cost-effective initiatives that hopefully will complete or be well underway by the 2020 highway construction target completion date.
By the way, plans to make cost-effective improvements in other areas of town are in our vision. These investments must be balanced with critical and continuous infrastructure upgrades.
The goal is to ensure our town is prosperous, inspirational, and safe, without changing the rhythm that makes us proud of where we live, work, and play.”
Mayor Ramsey and the Murphy Town Council are next scheduled to meet beginning at 5 p.m, Monday, Nov. 4, at City Hall.

Christy Peters Campbell: Obituary
Obituaries October 21, 2019
Christy Peters Campbell was born July 2, 1928 and died on October 19, 2019. Christy was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina and lived much of her life there before moving to Andrews in 2003.
Christy spent many happy years in Andrews, where her mother grew up, and she attended to her aunt, Jean Christy with devotion until Jean’s death in 2016. Christy enjoyed especially her good friend, Ruth Cochran, who was a devoted friend, and they always enjoyed a weekly trip to Murphy to go to thrift stores and eat dinner.
The family would like to thank Lucas and Heather Luther for being so kind to her and helping her in many ways for the past number of months.
She was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth Peters and Cornelia Christy Peters, as well as her husband, Glen Campbell. Christy was also predeceased by her first cousins, Eb Jordan and John Christy.
Surviving are her other first cousins, Robert H. Christy, William R. Christy and Thomas G. Christy, as well as many other cousins and their families.
A private burial will occur in the near future.

Paula Jean Benner Reilly, 58, of Murphy passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at her residence. She was a native of Farmingville, New York, where she worked as a medical transcriptionist for more than 20 years. Paula retired to Cherokee County in 2000 with her family. Paula was an avid bowler and huge Grateful Dead fan. She loved laying out on the beach and vacationing on cruises. Paula was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother to her children and grandchildren.
She was the daughter of Wanda Mae Benner of Indianapolis, Indiana and the late Neal Benner. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kyra Marie Reilly; and a sister, Pamela Benner.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband of more than 40 years, Daniel Thomas Reilly Sr.; four daughters, Melanie Hand and husband, Al of Riverhead, New York, Desiree Reilly and Shannan Crapse and husband, Tommy, all of Murphy, and Erin Cable and husband, Clint of Andrews; a son, Danny Reilly of Murphy; a sister, Jackie Calaway of Nashville, Tennessee; a brother, Steven Benner and wife, Cherry of Indianapolis, Indiana; 14 grandchildren, Rebecca, Jojo, Elizabeth, DeSean, Tyler, Dakoda, Joseph, Kyra, Thomas, Rhiannon, James, Jerry, Jonathan, and Aurora; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Murphy Town Council votes to rename downtown street

MURPHY, NC – Konehete Street in downtown Murphy may soon be renamed Veterans Memorial Lane.
The Murphy Town Council agreed at their regular meeting Oct. 7 to approve the change. Now the county’s commission board must do the same.
Should the commissioners approve the change, there is still a two-week period that follows for property owners on the road to register complaints.
“Only the portion entering Konehete Park will be impacted,” Town Manager Chad Simons said Friday, Oct. 11. “The entrance to the park (covering all of the ball fields), all the way past the power station, is the only portion that will be impacted.”

If there is no opposition, the town will change the name. Should anyone oppose, the decision goes back to the commission board for a final decision.
“This is something that’s been discussed with the veterans; something they would appreciate if the town and county would do,” Mayor Rick Ramsey said during the meeting. “It’s a way of honoring our veterans while not doing anything to the Eastern Band Cherokee Indian name of Connahetta, which we all know means ‘village by the water,’ and they are very proud of that.”
The motion to approve the change was made by Councilman Barry McClure, with a second from Councilwoman Gail Walker Stansell. The vote was unanimous.
SCHOOL BANDS WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS PARADE
The Murphy Town Council is looking for school bands to participate in the annual Christmas parade scheduled for the first Saturday in December.
The council agreed to pay each band $150 with a maximum of 10 bands wanted.
The decision came after Wayne Peacock with the Murphy Business Association spoke with the council to discuss plans for the upcoming event.
The possibility of adding more bands was brought up by Councilman Frank Dickey.
Peacock asked for a received approval to close a portion of Tennessee Avenue for the parade, which is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
The rain date for the parade is the following day, Sunday, Dec. 9, also at 4 p.m.
The lighting of the downtown Christmas tree is slated to follow the parade.

COUNCIL BUYS GARBAGE TRUCK
Also during the Oct. 7 meeting, the Murphy Town Council voted to purchase a used garbage truck from Bryson City at a cost of $10,000.
“We’ve had a time with our garbage truck. Each council member’s well aware of that,” Town Manager Chad Simons said
He added that the current truck has went down three times in the past few months, leaving the town sanitation department scrambling to collect trash.
The new truck is a 20-yard truck compared to the older 4-yard truck. The size difference will cut down on trips to the landfill, Simons said.
Councilwoman Gail Walker Stansell said she believed the town would make up the cost of the truck on the gas and time saved alone.
The decision to purchase the truck was unanimous.
