Marble Man In Jail for Drugs
Press Release June 20, 2018
Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer June 16th, 2018 arrest of 46 year old Derrick William Wilson of Marble North Carolina for possessing illegal controlled substances.
On June 16th, 2018 shortly before 5:30 am, deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to investigate a traffic hazard where vehicles were parked in the travelled portion of the roadway just off Highway 64 in the Ranger Community of Cherokee County. During the investigation several individuals were found around a camp fire. Deputies also found a tent near the camp fire with an individual snoring. In the process of checking the welfare of the individual the deputies found methamphetamine, Xanax, and morphine lying in plain view next to Wilson who was the sole occupant of the tent at the time.
Wilson was arrested on scene and transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center for charges of PWIMSD SCH II CS, PWIMSD SCH IV CS, SIMPLE POSSESSION SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. Wilson is currently confined in the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $25,000.00 secure bond and is expected to be in Cherokee County District Court on June 26th, 2018.
Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “Good work by the deputies who responded to the call. We continue our fight to control the drug problem in Cherokee County.”

Two arrested on drug charges
Police & Government March 26, 2018MURPHY, N.C. — Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the March 22, 2018, arrest of Dustin Eugene Mcclure, a 41-year-old white male, of Marble, North Carolina, and 36-year-old Timothy Robert Norton, of Candler, North Carolina, for possessing a trafficking amount of methamphetamine.
On March 22, 2018, detectives with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit provided information to the North Carolina Probation and Parole that the Marble residence of Mcclure possibly had stolen property and illegally possessed controlled substances.
Upon arriving at the Marble residence, stolen property and drug paraphernalia were observed in plain view. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence and conducted a search of the property. As a result, an excess of 117 grams of methamphetamine were seized along with two bottles of suspected steroids, a bottle of suspected MDMA capsules, marijuana seeds, stolen property, and numerous items of drug paraphernalia.
Mcclure was arrested and taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center where he was charged with: TRAFFIC IN METHAMPHETAMINE, PWIMSD METHAMPHETAMINE, MAINTAIN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSSESSION OF STOLEN GOODS, POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. Mcclure is currently being held on a $110,000 secure bond and is expected in Cherokee County District Court March 27, 2018.
Norton was arrested and taken to the Cheorkee County Detention Center where he was charged with TRAFFIC IN METHAMPHETAMINE, PWIMSD METHAMPHETAMINE, , MAINTAIN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSSESSION OF STOLEN GOODS, POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. Norton is currently being held on a $110,000 secure bond and is expected in Cherokee County District Court March 27, 2018.
Sheriff Palmer stated, “This was a pretty fair amount of dope taken off the street, the little over 4 ounces or nearly a quarter pound has an approximate street value of a little over $10,000. Good working with Probation and Parole to take these two down.”

Andrews man charged with murder

MURPHY, N.C. — Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the March 4. 2018, arrest of 36-year-old James Donald Taylor Jr., of Andrews, North Carolina, for second degree murder.
On March 4, 2018, the Cherokee County 911 Communications Center received a call for service to an address in Andrews, North Carolina. The nature of the call was that a female inside the residence had been shot. While law enforcement and emergency services personnel were en route to the scene, further information became known that Taylor had fled the scene in a small unknown make and model vehicle. Additional information was later given that Taylor was still armed.
Information was broadcast concerning the make and model of the vehicle that Taylor was occupying. A short time later, a deputy with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office observed the vehicle inside the town limits of Murphy. A felony stop was initiated which included several officers of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Murphy Police Department.
During the arrest of Taylor, information was later made known that the victim was deceased. Investigators with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by agents of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation worked late into the night continuing the investigation and seizing several items of evidence from the Andrews, North Carolina, residence.
Taylor has been booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on the charge of second degree murder. Currently, Taylor has no bond.
Sheriff Palmer stated, “This investigation is in its early stages as we continue to collect information. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and the community as we all experience this loss. We appreciate the assistance that has been provided by the Murphy Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.”

Three arrested for drugs and guns
Press Release February 21, 2018MURPHY, N.C.— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the Feb. 16, 2018, arrest of 19-year-old Alicia Madison Brooks, of Blairsville, Georgia, 32-year-old Benjamin Dann Owens, of Blairsville, Georgia, and 20-year-old Jordan Taylor Hensley, also of Blairsville, Georgia, for violations of the controlled substance statute and violation of various weapon statutes.
On Feb. 16, 2018, a narcotics detective observed a vehicle make an illegal U-turn on U.S. 64 east near the town limits of Murphy. The narcotics detective followed the vehicle and made a traffic stop in which the vehicle was occupied by Brooks, Owens and Hensley. After the driver of the vehicle refused consent to search the vehicle, the narcotics K-9 was used and alerted the presence of illegal narcotics.
During the search of the occupants of the vehicle, syringes and other paraphernalia was located. Additionally, officers located a semi-automatic pistol along with a rifle that appeared to have a silencer on it in the passenger area of the vehicle. During the stop, information was located that Owens was a convicted felon.
Alicia Madison Brooks was brought to the Cherokee County Detention Center and booked for: MAINTAIN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, RESISTING PUBLIC OFFICER, SIMPLE POSSESS SCH VI CS. Brooks was later released on a unsecure bond after appearing in Cherokee County District Court Feb. 19.
Benjamin Dann Owens was brought to the Cherokee County Detention Center where a small amount of suspected methamphetamine was found secreted on him. Owens remains incarcerated on a $15,000 secure bond on the following charges: POSSESS CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE PRISON/JAIL PREMISSES, POSSESSION OF FIREARM BY FELON, PWIMSD METHAMPHETAMINE.
Jordan Taylor Hensley was arrested and charged with RESISTING PUBLIC OFFICER. Hensley posted a $1,000 secure bond. Sheriff Palmer stated, “Again good work by all concerned. The mixture of illegal drugs and firearms, especially by convicted felons, makes for a dangerous situation!”

Absconding sex offender arrested after short foot chase

MURPHY, N.C.— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the Feb. 16, 2018, arrest of 38-year-old Robert Burl Fletcher III, who listed a Gaston County, North Carolina address.
On Feb. 16, 2018, a patrol officer was dispatched to a business located on U.S. 64 west to investigate a report of individuals acting suspicious who may be involved in the illegal sale of controlled substances. The patrol officer arrived on scene and obtained identifying information from a male and female at the location. At the same time, an investigator of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist in the investigation. Fletcher then started fleeing from the scene and was apprehended a short distance later.
In a search incident to arrest, a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and narcotic paraphernalia was found. Fletcher is a convicted sex offender and had two active warrants from Clay and Gaston counties in North Carolina for failure to Notify Change of Address.
Robert Burl Fletcher III is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center on the following charges POSSESS METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA, RESISTING PUBLIC OFFICER. Fletcher’s bond for the Cherokee County charges is $15,000 secure. Clay and Gaston counties both have holds placed on Fletcher should he make bond.
Sheriff Palmer stated, “We cannot over stress the importance of the Sex Offender Registry laws and their importance in keeping registered offenders in compliance.”

Lady Bulldogs 76, Lumpkin Co 55
Murphy Bulldogs, Murphy High, Team FYN Sports December 28, 2017
The Murphy Lady Bulldogs can play, folks. They opened the Battle of the States tournament at Towns County High School against a quality opponent, the Lumpkin County Lady Indians. Lumpkin (4-4, 1-1) was coming off a big 51-24 win at home against Mt Zion, after a tough 2-pt loss at Gilmer. Lumpkin’s biggest win of the season so far was against region rival Dawson County (46-39). The fact of the matter is – Lumpkin County is no push-over.
All that being said, Murphy’s varsity girls (6-1, 1-0) may carry the most talented roster TeamFYNSports has seen step onto a basketball court.
Nine different Lady Dawgs scored in the game, as Murphy head coach Ray Gutierrez worked to spread the playing time among his elite corps of hoopsters. Murphy senior Jessica Beckner was easily the TeamFYNSports player of the game, as she scored 24 points with 9 field goals and she went 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Junior Ellie Martin, one of three Lady Dawgs to hit shots from beyond the perimeter, was the second-leading scorer with 12 points, two of her baskets coming from outside the arch.
Juniors Aubrey Clapsaddle and Bri Moore each scored 8 points in the game, followed by sophomore Sydni Addison and senior Hailey Thompson with 7 points each. Freshman Kaiya Pickens scored 6 points in the game. Senior Brittin Johnson and freshman Sarah Pulliam each scored 2 points for Murphy, respectively.
The first quarter was all Murphy – scoring 21 points and holding Lumpkin to only two points of offense, both points coming by way of free throws made by Raven Chester of the Lady Indians. With a 21-2 first quarter, most expected this game to be over before it even began.
However, the Lady Indians’ offense came alive in the 2nd quarter, ignited behind the effort by Karlee Armstrong, who hit two 3’s and a field goal to put up 8 of Lumpkin’s 18 points. Makenzie Caldwell hit a three-pointer and Clara White put up six points in the effort as Lumpkin fought to challenge Murphy’s dominant start.
Murphy’s offense was as consistent and accurate in the 2nd as it was in the 1st quarter, despite the offensive push-back by Lumpkin County. The Lady Dawgs put up 21 points (again) and led 42-20 going into the locker room at halftime.
Throughout the second half, both teams saw surges in which Murphy would increase their lead, followed by Lumpkin patiently chopping away at it. Ultimately, the margin would prove too great for the Lady Indians to overcome.
Murphy won the game by a final score of 76-55, advancing to face Union County in the second round, Thursday afternoon. Lumpkin’s varsity girls moved to the other side of the bracket, facing Darlington (GA) Thursday morning.
Murphy man sentenced in assault case

MURPHY, N.C. — William Kraig Moran, 53, of Murphy pled guilty to statutory rape in
Cherokee County Superior Court presided over by the Honorable Gary Gavenus on Nov.
13, 2017.
In July 2017, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s received a complaint alleging that Moran
had sexually assaulted a minor child. The joint investigation was conducted involving the Cherokee
County Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee County Department of Social Services, HAVEN Child
Advocacy Center, and the 30th District Attorney’s Office. The joint investigation culminated in the arrest of Moran.
Judge Gavenus sentenced Moran to a maximum of 21 years and 8 months in prison, and
he will serve at least 13 years and 10 months before he is eligible for release. Upon his release
from prison, Moran will be monitored by a GPS satellite tracking system, and he will be required
to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
“This conviction keeps a very dangerous child predator off the streets while he serves a
lengthy prison sentence and sends a strong message to the community that the District Attorney’s
office places the highest priority on protecting our children. I commend all of the dedicated
professionals who partner with the District Attorney’s office to give a strong voice to our most
vulnerable victims. Congratulations on a job well done,” said District Attorney Ashley Welch.
Sheriff Palmer said, “Again, (this was) great team work by some very dedicated individuals. We echo
District Attorney Welch’s sentiments and will continue to fight those who attempt to rob our
youth of their innocence.”

CITIZEN TIP LEADS TO ARRESTS FOR DRUGS AND FUGITIVES
Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the November 09th, 2018 arrest of 31 year old Matthew Wondra of Andrews North Carolina and 20 year old Katelyn Helmick of Sylvania Georgia for controlled substance violations and being fugitives from justice. During the evening hours of November 09th, 2018 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received information that a female was selling controlled substances at a local convenience store. Deputies went to the area and were able to locate the vehicle that Helmick and Wondra were occupying at the time. During the investigation a search of the vehicle and persons of Helmick and Wondra recovered controlled substances, paraphernalia and US currency. Additionally, a wants and warrant check of both Helmick and Wondra revealed they were wanted in Georgia in connection with a major theft investigation.

William “Billy” Mark Burnette, age 88 of Southside, AL passed away Thursday, October 25, 2018 at his residence.
He was born in Union County, GA to the late Monroe and Dessie Collins Burnett. Billy worked as a federal poultry inspector. He was very creative and enjoyed woodworking. Billy was a musician.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Burnette; she passed away April 19, 2018. Billy and Frankie were married 63 years; two brothers, Durane Burnett and Monroe Burnett, Jr.; and one sister, Corrine Beaver.
He is survived by his daughter, Letricia McDaniel; two grandchildren, Charles “Mike” Roland McDaniel III and Jordan Elizabeth McDaniel.
Funeral Service will be held at 3 pm, Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Aud Brown will officiate. Special music will be provided by Vivian Brown. Burial will be in the Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery in Blairsville, GA. Pallbearers will be Charles McDaniel III, Robert Truett, Cody Truett, Jonah Truett, Ronald Harris and Brady Harris.

Mary Lou Stiles, age 95 of Murphy, NC passed away Saturday October 20, 2018 at Murphy Rehab & Nursing.
She was the daughter of Robert Taylor Kelly and Rosetta Leatherwood. She was a homemaker and although she did not have any children of her own, she helped raise dozens of children in the Bear Paw Community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Stiles and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her brother, William T. Kelly and wife Lorine and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Tuesday October 23, 2018 at Bear Paw Baptist Church. Rev. Steve Ware and Rev. Tommy Hayes and Rev. Eddie Hardin will officiate. Burial will follow in Bear Paw Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1-2pm, Tuesday October 23, 2018 at Bear Paw Baptist Church prior to the service.

Jean Ruth Jarrell Parrish: Obituary

She was born October 13, 1928 in Temple, Texas to A.J. and Ruth Cox Jarrell. She grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana and Rome, Georgia. After graduating from Shorter College in Rome, she moved to Atlanta, where she worked as a medical technician at Fort McPherson. Jean studied voice for many years and sang in Atlanta’s Theater Under the Stars and Atlanta Opera Arts, where she met her husband, Jack Parrish. They were married in 1956. She was a devoted wife and mother, a gifted homemaker, a strong and gracious Southern lady in the very best sense the words. She was fun-loving and an excellent hostess. Her talents included singing, all kinds of sewing and needlework, gardening, painting, and cooking. Jean always looked for opportunities to serve. She was especially mindful of those less fortunate, and she was a lifelong supporter of ministries which provide for children. She led both of her daughters’ Girl Scout troops for many years and started a troop in an underserved neighborhood near their home. She was active in the Shorter College Alumni Association. She earned appreciation awards from both of those organizations for her commitment, leadership, and service. In 1994, she and Jack moved from Stone Mountain to Hayesville, NC where they shared their new home as a bed and breakfast for several years. She enjoyed painting and tending their flower gardens. She was always active in a local church, most recently Hayesville UMC. Her family is blessed by her legacy of graciousness, strength, good manners, sweet tea, chocolate chip cookies, and trust in the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, ten months ago; she is survived by their two daughters, Patty Parrish Chaney (Bill), and Paula Parrish Bosarge (David), grandchildren Daniel (Hayley), Michael (Anna), and Catherine Chaney; and great-grandson, Logan Gray Chaney.
Visitation will be from 2-3pm on Monday, October 22, 2018 at the Townson-Rose Chapel of Hayesville. A funeral service will be held at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 3pm. Rev. Kirk Hatherly will officiate.

Virginia, better known as “Ginny” was loved by all who knew her and brought much joy into everyone’s life. Her smile and humor are best described by the verse “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine” (Proverbs 17:22). Ginny retired from the public-school system serving the special needs children of Royal Oaks, MI in 1989. She served on the Board of Elections for many years. She was an active member and faithful servant at New Life Church in Hayesville, NC. The love of her life was serving God’s people with food, fellowship, and friendship.
She was reunited in heaven with: her husband, Lorne Walsh; her son, David J. Walsh; her sister, Dorothy DeLong, her brother, Edmund Fields; her sister, Patsy Satterfield, and many more precious loved ones.
She is survived by her sons, Michael Walsh and Daniel Walsh; her grandchildren, with whom she shared many a treasured moment: Matt (Maleita), Amy (Dan), Mark, and Adam; Jason (Jess), John (Jenn), Sara (Ted), R.J. (Jenna), and Katie (Edward); and Nikki (Tim), Amanda (Rick), and Jeremiah. Ginny counted it a blessing to witness the birth and lives of 21 great-grandchildren. She lived her life in a way that culminated with a testimony “Her children arise and call her blessed.” (Proverbs 31:28a)
Visitation will be held from 6:00p to 8:00p at New Life Church in Hayesville, NC. The funeral service will be on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 11:00a at New Life Church, 34 Sunrise Place, Hayesville, NC 28904, officiated by Pastor Greg Carroll.

Pat Taylor, 83, of Asheville, formerly of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at her residence. She was a native of Summit County, Ohio, but lived in Murphy for three years before moving to Asheville in 1976. She was owner of Fairview Tax Service.
She was the daughter of the late Wanda J. Kelley and the wife of the late Halsey J. Taylor, who died November 8, 2002. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Pilleggi; and a son, Ronnie Pilleggi.
Surviving are three daughters, Laura Lee Brady and husband, Jesse of Asheville, North Carolina, Ramona Taylor and husband, Ray Green of Marion, North Carolina, and Cindy Chastain and husband, Bruce of Murphy; a son, Halsey Jack Taylor Jr. and wife, Becky of Fairview, North Carolina; a sister, Janet Bassett of Murphy; 13 grandchildren, Nick, Johnny, Jennifer, Amanda, Michelle, Sharon, Candace, David, Justin, Hayley, Brittany, Devon, and Steven; and 14 great grandchildren, Madison, Joey, Jackson, Hayden, Hunter, Hannah, Abby, Alex, Sammy, Joshua, Christopher, Mason, Lilah, and Alexandria.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2018 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with Pastor Darrell McClaren officiating. The interment will be in Old Martins Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steven, David, and Justin Taylor, Joe Kime, Justin Sigmon, and Mike Pressley.
The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:45 Saturday morning at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the services.
