Rev. Frank Hamilton: Obituary
Obituaries October 4, 2019
Rev. Frank Hamilton, age 86, of Andrews, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, October 5, 2019 at his residence. He was a native of Kearny, New Jersey and later served in the United States Army and was a Korean War Veteran. Frank had worked as a long-haul truck driver before God called him into the ministry. Frank graduated from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi where he received his Masters of Divinity. He had pastored in Mississippi and was called to Andrews Presbyterian Church in 1990 where he later retired. He then followed God’s calling to minister in Scotland for the next five years. Upon returning to the United States, he was called back into ministry to Indiana and eventually returned to Andrews Presbyterian Church in 2011, retiring for a second time in 2018.
In addition to the churches, he had worked with the Hebron Colony and Good Samaritan programs. Frank was a member of the Lion’s Club in Mississippi, North Carolina, and Scotland. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking on the Appalachian Trail. He was Chaplain and member of the VFW Post 7620 in Andrews.
He was the son of the late Frank Edward, Sr. and Jennie Alexander Hamilton. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Szalkowski and a son-in-law, Alford Kimble.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Helen Sawyer Hamilton; two daughters, Nancy Kimble of Peachtree and Elizabeth Derreberry and husband, Douglas “Doodle” of Andrews; three sons, Richard Hamilton and wife Teresa of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Russell Hamilton and wife, Cynthia of Ellijay, Georgia, and Robert Hamilton and wife, Allison of Andrews; a brother, David Hamilton of Georgetown, South Carolina; thirteen grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Andrews Presbyterian Church with Rev. Larry Wilson officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Hayesville VFW Post 6812, Hayesville American Legion Post 532, and Murphy American Legion Post 96.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:50 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the Andrews Presbyterian Church prior to the service.

Kenneth “Tanky” Thomas: Obituary

Kenneth “Tanky” Thomas, age 64 of Murphy, NC passed away Thursday, October 3, 2019 at his residence.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the son of the late William and Velma Sprinkles Thomas. Tanky was a carpenter. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
He is survived by three sons, Johnny, Brett and Brad Thomas; two daughters, Heather and Drew Thomas; one brother, Joel Thomas; one sister, Sandra Coleman; and several grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 3 pm, Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy, NC. Rev. Edward Carter will officiate. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Morris Graves, Tom Graves, Bryan Graves, Justin Byers, Brett Thomas, Brad Thomas and Joel Thomas.

Anna Mae Bates: Obituary

Anna Mae Bates, age 96 of Murphy passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019 at Murphy Rehab and Nursing. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Parks and Hattie Howard Parks. She was a homemaker. Anna was a longtime member of Ranger Baptist Church where she taught adult Sunday School for 37 years, WMU director, church treasurer and helped with Vacation Bible School, and all other church functions and activities.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Emerson Bates Sr.; daughter, Joyce Ann Bates; granddaughter, Kimberly Lee Daniels and brother, Howard Parks.
Anna is survived by her sons, Willard Emerson Bates, Jr and wife, Margie and Richard Bates and wife, Peggy; sister, Hazel Morris; grandson, Phillip Bates and 3 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2pm Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Ranger Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Jimmy Hogsed will officiate. Ranger Baptist Church deacons will serve as pallbearers.

Landfill expansion update provided by Wiggins, Ward

Cherokee County residents should be able to begin using the new cells at the county landfill by Thanksgiving, if conditions cooperate.
Two of those conditions are use and weather. Both can be unpredictable.
County Manager Randy Wiggins gave a landfill construction update to the county commission Sept. 16.
County Manager Randy Wiggins said Monday, Sept. 23, that the new cells at the landfill should begin receiving waste by Thanksgiving.
“Expect Phase 5 Cell 2 completion and permitting before (then),” Wiggins said Monday.
He said as much to the county commission board during their regular meeting Sept. 16.
That time table still holds true a week later, with the lack of rain partly to thank.
County Solid Waste Director Rob Ward said the possibility of weather delaying the project is a real one.
“Weather delays are always possible,” Ward said.
Ward added that layers of clay have to be compacted to exact specifications while running on slopes in order to construct a landfill.
“Thus, the process is vulnerable to erosion delays, if it rains,” he said.
Wiggins also mentioned to the county commission that, should a large load of trash come into the landfill at one time, the current cells could fill up.
Wiggins cited the possibility of two or three homes being demolished or remodeled at the same time, or a similar situation, that could cause the cells to fill up early.
As long as that doesn’t happen, the current cells receiving waste should do the job until Thanksgiving, according to Wiggins.
Once the new cells are able to begin receiving trash, it will still take some time to be done with the project.
“The full construction project is not expected to be complete and fully permitted until January of 2020,” Wiggins said.
The project began more than five years ago, according to Ward. The engineering, planning, and permitting was finally completed in early 2019 and construction site prep began with surveying in April.
The county has budgeted a little more than $3.5 million for the project.
“The county planned ahead for this project and we have reserved fund balance dollars over the years to build a balance of fund dedicated to this project,” Higgins said.
While the figure is high, the cells will be usable for a long time.
“Given that the projected growth rate for Cherokee County is correct, then we should have airspace for over 20 yards after the completion of Phase 5, Cells 1 and 2, in January 2020,” Ward said.
After that, there is still more room on the property to add new cells as needed.

James J. Janson: Obituary

James J. Janson, 86, of Hayesville, formerly of Murphy, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 in a Clay County care facility. He was a native of Newburgh, New York. James was a Korean War veteran, serving in the United States Navy, where he worked as a radio technician. He worked as a draftsman for General Dynamics most of his life. James owned “The Train Stop” bar in Franklin, Massachusetts for 15 years before retiring to Murphy. He later moved to Arkansas, where he had a horse farm. He had a love for horses. He returned to Hayesville in 2017. James attended the Boiling Springs Baptist Church locally. He enjoyed racing sports cars when he was younger.
He was the son of the late James Joseph and Elizabeth O’Shaunessey Janson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clare Lanartze Janson and his second wife, Olive Janson; a son, James J. Janson Jr.; a sister, Marie Marshall; and a brother, Robert Janson.
Surviving are his wife, Mary O’Dell Janson of Texas; a son, Curtis Janson and wife, Susan of Milford, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Jamie Janson, Christine Janson, Shaun Janson, and Jacqueline Presley; and two great-grandchildren.
An inurnment will be held in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton, Massachusetts at a later date.

Wayne A. Timpson: Obituary

Wayne A. Timpson, age 73, of Marietta, Georgia and formerly of Murphy, NC passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019.
Wayne was a native of Cherokee County and a son of the late Lawrence Arthur and Annie Mae Stiles Timpson.
Wayne was a US Army veteran. He went on to work for Lockheed Martin until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Timpson and brother, Calvin Timpson.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebekah Frahm, son-in-law Jonathan Frahm and three granddaughters. He is also survived by four brothers, Elbert “Tim” Timpson, Frank Timpson, Larry Timpson and Johnny Timpson; two sisters, Berniece Deuel and Kathy Parker; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be at 2 pm on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Burial to follow at the Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites being conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12 to 2 at Townson-Rose Funeral Home.

Steve Cottrell: Obituary

Steve Cottrell, 76, of Hayesville passed away Monday, September 23, 2019 in a Gainesville, Georgia hospital. He was a native of Henderson, North Carolina and went on to receive his master’s degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Steve coached college basketball at Old Dominion, Washington State University, and Southern Methodist University, ending his college coaching career at Western Carolina University. He then moved to Hayesville, where he worked as coach, athletic director, and assistant principal for Hayesville High School.
He was the son of the late Joel Stephen Cottrell Sr. and Oretha Louise Avery Cottrell.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Kathy Cottrell; a daughter, Laura Cottrell of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two sons, Todd Cottrell and wife, Kim of Flowery Branch, Georgia and Michael Cottrell and wife, Jenny of Hayesville; and five grandchildren, Rachel Cottrell, Zach Cottrell, Drew Cottrell, Josh Cottrell, and Adam Cottrell.
A private family celebration will be held.

Linda Lou Anderson, age 74 of Hayesville, passed away September 20, 2019. Linda was born in Dekalb County, GA to the late Rupert and Willie Brown Dispain. She loved to camp and spend time with her grandkids. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Dispain. She is survived by her husband, Robert Anderson; her daughter, Gina Bryson and husband David of Lilburn, GA; 3 grandchildren, Courtney Bryson and her wife Renee Ussery of Rutledge, GA, Kendra Bryson of Lawerenceville, GA, and Cameron Bryson of Lawrenceville, GA; 1 great grandson Riley, and a great grand daughter Reigna to be born in December. Robert David Anderson, age 76 of Brasstown, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at his residence.
He was born in Haywood County, NC to the late Ray and Mallie Wooten. He loved fishing, working in his yard, splitting wood, smoking his pipe and being with his family and dog, Gunner. Robert was a member of Hickory Stand Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Lee Anderson; brothers, Tommy, Lane, Ray Jr., Linwood, Neal and Kenneth Anderson and sisters, Brenda Teems and Joan Anderson.
He is survived by his two daughters, Pam Anderson and fiance, John Farmer of Murphy and Gwendolyn Queen and her husband, Chris of Whittier, grandchildren, Taylor Gibson, Bryson Ledford, Kyle Luke, Bobby Allison and Brandi Fesperman; great grandchildren, Arya Gibson, Clarissa Lavan, Cole Allison and Claire Allison; brothers, Terry Anderson and wife, Carla, and sister, Peggy Henson and husband, Red.

Kelly Luther Owens, age 50 of Warne, NC passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Union General Hospital.
He was the son of Luther Owens and the late Jerleen Owenby Owens. Kelly was a physical therapy assistant with Mountain Home Nursing. He was a Steelers fan, enjoyed collecting comic books and football cards. Kelly was a great man and was dedicated to his family, friends and patients.He loved to make people laugh and he was a very loving husband and father. Kelly will be greatly missed, although we know he is rejoicing in Heaven with his family who has gone on before.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Vicki Brooks Owens; son, Kasey Owens; daughter, Lindseyrae Cowart and grandchildren, Adalyn Vandewerker and Alex Cowart.

Timothy Scroggs: Obituary

Timothy Scroggs, 64, of Brasstown passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019 at his residence. He was a native and lifetime resident of Brasstown. Tim built a reputation over 40 years for working on German and foreign cars. He enjoyed riding the country roads locally with his family, but also traveling across the country. Tim also enjoyed trout fishing and sitting down for a good meal.
He was the son of the late Harold and Doris Parton Scroggs. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Scroggs Jr. and Scott Scroggs; and an infant sister, Lanette.
Surviving are his wife, Lea Graham Scroggs; a daughter, Annie Scroggs of Miami, Florida and Johnathan Scroggs and wife, Zoe of Hayesville; two grandchildren; an aunt, Mabel Taylor of Asheville, North Carolina; an uncle, Tommy Anderson of Hayesville; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 26, 2019 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Rev. Kenny White officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 Thursday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the services.

Donald “Todd” Fleming, age 37 of Murphy passed away September 18, 2019. Todd was born in Cherokee County to Donnie Fleming and Alice Graves Kephart. Todd enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved basketball and football. He worked as a carpenter building homes.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepfather, Jim Kephart; daughter, Khloe Grace Fleming; sister, April Fleming and ex-wife, Jennifer Fleming.
