Armed man arrested after standoff

MURPHY, N.C. — Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the Dec. 20, 2017, arrest of 41-year-old Clyde Dean Dyer, of Andrews, North Carolina, for charges stemming from an armed standoff with Cherokee County Deputies.
On Dec. 19, 2017, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Patrol Deputies of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to an Andrews, North Carolina, residence to investigate a report of a Clyde Dean Dyer, who was armed and holding a mother and two children against their will. Further information was provided that if law enforcement officers arrived at the residence, Dyer stated, he would kill the officers.
As Patrol Deputies arrived on scene, Cherokee County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was staged at a safe distance to provide further assistance, if needed. Additionally, the Cherokee Tribal Police Department SWAT team was requested to come to the scene to provide additional tactical assistance.
As the situation unfolded, the Patrol Deputies positioned themselves and were able to remove the two children from the residence. Shortly thereafter, Dyer pointed a rifle at the Patrol Deputies and discharged it.
After assuring the safety of the two children, the Patrol Deputies re-positioned themselves around the trailer, and a short time later, Dyer exited the residence and was subdued by the Patrol Deputies. It was later learned that Dyer had been wrestling with his wife, who had taken a loaded .45 caliber pistol from Dyer just prior to his exit from the trailer. The .45 caliber pistol and a .22 magnum rifle were seized from the residence.
Dyer was arrested and transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center where he was charged with three counts of kidnapping first degree, five counts of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun, and five counts of resisting an officer. Dyer is currently under a $250,000 secure bond. Dyer is expected to be in Cherokee County District Court Jan. 19, 2018.
Sheriff Palmer stated, “We thank both Cherokee County EMS and Cherokee Tribal for the assistance they provided. I want to compliment the bravery and courage of the officers who placed their safety and lives on the line in removing the children from the threat and re-engaging to subdue Dyer. This shows the caliber of officers we are blessed to have serve our community. Job well done!”

Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA) Press Release

The Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA) is seeking volunteers to help with trail maintenance for an upcoming work trip.
According to Barry Allen, Georgia work trip coordinator for the BMTA, a work trip is planned for Saturday, Nov. 25, on a section of trail within the Big Frog Wilderness Area in Tennessee. Blowovers and downed trees will be the focus of the work trip, and Allen hopes to assemble a team of six to seven sawyers to work the trail south of Forest Service Road 221. Participants in this trip can expect about a five-mile out and back hike, Allen said.
Depending on the turnout and the number of certified crosscut workers, a second team may work another section of the BMT that follows Dry Pond Lead Trail north to Kimsey Hwy. (FS 68). Allen stated this section has not been worked in over a year and will likely also need lopper work even if only a few trees are down. This section is four miles one way and is a gradual uphill climb.
All work trip participants are asked to wear sturdy shoes or boots, long sleeve pants and shirts, work gloves and, for cold-weather trips, multiple thin layers that can be easily shed one at a time. Also, a daypack for storing food, water or other items is always a good idea for work trips. Food and water are not supplied by the BMTA on work trips. The BMTA recommends workers to bring at least two quarts of water for the trip.
Those interested can meet either at The Home Depot in Blue Ridge, Georgia, at 8:30 a.m. or at Thunder Rock Campground eight miles west of Ducktown, Tennessee, off of U.S. Hwy. 64 at 9 a.m.
The Benton MacKaye Trail spans three states – Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina – and nearly 300 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Davenport Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is enjoyed by thousands of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts each year.

Dallas Dwayne Carringer pled guilty to assault with a deadly weapon

MURPHY, N.C. — Dallas Dwayne Carringer, 25, of Murphy pled guilty to assault with a
deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in Cherokee County Superior Court
presided over by the Honorable Gary Gavenus on Nov. 13, 2017.
In May 2017, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Candy
Mountain Road in the Hiwassee Dam community of Cherokee County to a report of an
individual being shot. At the culmination of the investigation, Carringer was arrested.
Judge Gavenus sentenced Carringer to not less than 67 months nor more than 93 months in
prison.
Sheriff Palmer stated, “This was some outstanding work by individuals in my office who
quickly made an arrest. We thank District Attorney Welch and her staff on teaming up with us
to present a case and bring Carringer to justice.”

Fire Closes Nantahala Gorge

A 14-mile section of U.S. 74/N.C. 19 in Swain County has been closed due to debris from nearby wildfires.
The stretch of road, which goes through the Nantahala Gorge, will be closed to all traffic until officials deem the area safe for residents and visitors.
Crews from the Department of Transportation have established a 30-mile detour around the closure, which will add longer travel time for motorists driving in Western North Carolina.
Southbound traffic is being detoured on the following route: North on N.C. 28 to Stecoah, south on N.C. 143 in Robbinsville, then south on U.S. 129 to Topton. Northbound traffic will follow that route in reverse.
Fires in the area have resulted in loose debris and rocks tumbling to the U.S. 74/N.C. 19 creating dangerous situations.
Transportation officials remind motorists that wildfires create smoke that can quickly reduce visibility. Motorists are advised to slow down, obey all posted signs and add extra time into upcoming plans.

MURPHY MAN ARRESTED FOR KIDNAPPING AND TAKING MINORS OUT OF STATE

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the March 22ND, 2016 arrest of 43 year old Jose Hector Alvarado, of Murphy North Carolina for Kidnapping.
On March 19th, 2016 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a report that two minor females were missing from home. During the investigation information was located that indicated the females had been taken to Anderson South Carolina by Alvarado without consent of the minors parents.
Working with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office the minors were located and taken into protective custody until they were returned to Cherokee County. Alvarado was arrested and held in the Anderson County Detention Facility until he was extradited back to Cherokee County.
Alvarado was charged with 2 counts of First Degree Kidnapping and 1 count of Felonious Restraint. The North Carolina Magistrate set a $200,000.00 secure bond. Alvarado is currently being held at the Cherokee County Detention Facility awaiting a March 30th, 2016 District Court date.
Sheriff Palmer stated “We are in the early stages of this investigation. We are being assisted by Federal agencies and anticipate additional charges. I want to commend the responding deputies both here and in Anderson County South Carolina as well as our communications personnel. Their dogged effort to locate these minors was outstanding and instrumental in bringing them safely home.”

Suspect Flees Police – Leaves Vehicle Behind

March One Harvest Food Program for North Carolina, North Georgia, & Eastern Tennessee

Angel Harvest Ministries is now accepting orders for the March One Harvest Food Program for North Carolina, North Georgia and Eastern Tennessee. Clay County residents can go to Samaritan’s Promise in Hayesville and make their in person orders. In person orders will also be taken at the Shepherd of the Mountains Church behind Eller and Owens Furniture store. All in person orders must be placed by Wednesday noon March 09th, 2016.
Please notice that all orders will have to be completed by Wednesday March 09th, 2016 at 11:59. There will not be any changes taken or made after that time.
Checks and money orders can be mailed to PO Box 275 Murphy NC 28906 but must be received by Noon Wednesday March 09th, 2016. Please make checks and money orders payable to Angel Harvest Ministries.
Orders will be distributed on Saturday March 19th, 2016 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Any order not picked up by 11:00 am will be considered a donation and given to the needy.

THREE ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the February 13th, 2015 arrest of 34 year old Charleston Ray Waldroup and 26 year old Mary Martha Rankin and the February 14th arrest of 54 year old Ricky Tex Waldroup, all of Murphy North Carolina for sexual assault charges involving a minor child.
Mary Rankin was arrested and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on charges of FELONY CHILD ABUSE-PROSTITUTION, FELONY CHILD ABUSE-SEXUAL ACT, DISSEMINATE OBSCENE MATERIAL TO MINOR UNDER 16. The Cherokee County Magistrate set a $750,000.00 secure bond. Rankin is expected to be in Cherokee County District Court on February 24th, 2016. Rankin is currently still incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center.
Charleston Ray Waldroup was arrested and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on Charges of FELONY INCEST, FIRST DEGREE RAPE OF A CHILD, FIRST DEGREE SEXUAL OFFENSE, and was set a $1,000.000.00 secure bond. Charleston Waldroup is also expected to appear in Cherokee County District Court February 24th, 2016. Charleston Waldroup is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center.
Ricky Tex Waldroup was arrested and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on Charges of FELONY INCEST, FIRST DEGREE RAPE OF A CHILD, 2 counts of FIRST DEGREE SEXUAL OFFENSE, and was set a $1,000.000.00 secure bond. Ricky Waldroup is also expected to appear in Cherokee County District Court February 24th, 2016. Ricky Waldroup is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee County Detention Center.
Based upon the age of the victim and the sensitive nature of the case, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office will not be releasing any additional information concerning this incident at this time.

MURPHY MAN ARRESTED FOR DRUGS

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the February 11th, 2016 arrest of 37 year old Deodrick Santrez Boykin, of Murphy North Carolina for possession of a stolen vehicle and the illegal possession of controlled substances.
On February 11th, 2016 Boykin was stopped by members of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. Boykin was arrested during the traffic stop based on warrants for possession of a stolen vehicle. During a search of the vehicle subsequent to the arrest on the warrant, Methamphetamine and Heroin along with items of paraphernalia were found.
Boykin was brought to the Cherokee County Detention Center where he was charged with POSSESS WITH INTENT TO MANUFACTURE/SELL/DELIVER HEROIN, POSSESS METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESS STOLEN AUTOMOBILE, MAINTAIN PLACE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSSESS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA, SIMPLE POSSESSION SCHEDULE II CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE. Boykin is currently being held on a $10,000.00 secure bond awaiting a February 24th, 2016 District Court date.
Sheriff Palmer stated “Whatever it takes and however many times we need to put people in jail so that they learn that we will not tolerate the illegal sale and distribution of drugs in Cherokee County we will continue doing what we are doing and encourage our community to continue to partner with us, we are making a difference.”

Joint Operation Nabs 6 in Prescription Drug Fraud including CEO of Union General Hospital

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the Union County Georgia Sheriff’s Office arrest of James Lanier Heaton, George David Gowder III, John Michael Gowder, Virginia Lou Harkins, Gail Gowder, and Jamie Harkins all who provided Blairsville Georgia addresses, for charges stemming from a joint investigation into prescription fraud.
FYN spoke with officials and the hospital confirms John Michael Gowder is the CEO of Union General.

The joint operation involved members of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Tactical Diversion Squad, the Union County Georgia Sheriff’s Office and the Cherokee County North Carolina Sheriff’s Office. Although the investigation is ongoing to date information has been discovered that would indicate that the ring was operating in Cherokee County North Carolina and may be facing charges here as well.
Sheriff Palmer stated “We enjoyed the opportunity to work with the agencies involved. Sheriff Mack Mason and his Office have been a tremendous ally as we are sending the message No longer can you deal drugs across county and state lines – We will hunt you down and prosecute you.”
