Accumulating snowfall expected on Friday across Southwest North Carolina and the mountains of Eastern Tennessee…

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST

SATURDAY…

Light to moderate snow occurring. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute.

Additional snow accumulations of one to three inches are expected.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions are occurring. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511.

 

Ways to prepare and stay safe:

  • Stay indoors during the storm.
    Prolonged exposure to cold can cause hypothermia.
  • Walk and drive carefully on icy sidewalks and roads.                                                                                           Many injuries and accidents are caused by slippery conditions.
  •  Before driving, let someone know your destination, route and expected time of arrival.
     If your car gets stuck, it’ll be easier to find you. 
  •  If you lose feeling and color in your nose, ears, hands or feet, cover the exposed area, avoid         rubbing your skin and seek medical help immediately.                                                                                             You may have frostbite.                                                                                                                                                         
  • When shoveling snow, take breaks and lift lighter loads.                                                                                 Working too hard can lead to heart attacks.                                                                                                                      
  •  Stay Dry.                                                                                                                                                                       Wet clothes makes you lose body heat, increasing your risk for hypothermia.

UPDATE: All Cherokee County Schools’ athletic events scheduled for this evening are cancelled.

The Murphy versus Hiawassee Dam high school basketball game will be played Monday. The Andrews versus Robbinsville high school game will be rescheduled for a later time.

All wrestling matches are cancelled as well.

We are now under a winter weather warning, so please use caution and judgement when traveling.

 

MURPHY, N.C.- A winter weather advisory for Cherokee County, North Carolina, is in effect until Saturday, December 8. One to three inches of snow accumulation in the lower elevations with more in the higher elevations are expected, and roads will be treacherous, so please use caution.

Deal Issues State of Emergency Ahead of New Winter Storm

Ahead of a second winter storm this week, Gov. Nathan Deal issued a new state of emergency for 21 counties beginning Thursday evening and lasting through Sunday, Jan. 24, at midnight. The emergency declaration extends to 21 counties under a winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service. They include Banks, Catoosa, Dade, Dawson, Fannin, Franklin, Gilmer, Gordon, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, Walker, White and Whitfield Counties. Deal continues to monitor an additional 24 counties, including those in metro Atlanta, under a winter storm advisory.

“In order to prepare for the second round of storms, I’ve directed state agency heads to encourage employees to telecommute where appropriate,” Deal said. “Capitol Hill agencies and other state government offices will close at 12:00 p.m. on Friday to allow time for roads and bridges to be treated in advance of possible freezing rain and snow. I encourage municipal governments and private businesses in metro Atlanta and other affected areas to follow suit. I will continue to monitor those counties under a winter storm advisory and revise my executive order as needed.”

The National Weather Service has issued the advisory for Barrow, Bartow, Carroll, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Elbert, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Haralson, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Polk, Rockdale and Walton Counties.

GEMA/HS and Emergency Operations Command will continue coordinating response efforts between the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Natural Resources.

Strong winter storm to impact the region tonight through early Sunday.

A strong winter storm is expected to bring a wintry mix of precipitation to the region tonight through Saturday night. The Heaviest snowfall will likely occur along Southwest Virginia, the Southern Appalachian Mountains, and the Cumberland Plateau. With the highest amounts occurring along the highest terrain. In addition, ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch are possible in areas mainly north of Interstate 40.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1 PM EST /noon cst/ Friday to 7 PM EST /6 PM cst/ Saturday.

  • Event: rain will move into the area on and transition to snow Friday afternoon and evening. During this transition places could experience a wintry mix of rain, sleet, freezing rain. And snow. By Friday evening snow will become the dominant precipitation type. Snowfall amounts between 3 to 5 inches will be possible, with a few locally higher amounts.
  • Timing: Friday afternoon through Saturday evening.
  • Impacts: The heavy snow will cause dangerous driving conditions. Especially on secondary roads. During the peak of the storm, many these roads will likely become extremely treacherous. Travel is strongly discouraged, unless it is absolutely Necessary!.

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. In addition. Snowfall intensities will be heavy enough to substantially reduce visibilities at times. Travel is discouraged. If travel is unavoidable, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
