MURPHY MAN ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the October 30th, 2018 arrest of Harry James Verner, a 18 year old Murphy North Carolina man for charges stemming from the sexual assault of a minor.

On or about October 15th, 2018 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was notified that a young child had been sexually assault on or about October 13th, 2018 at a residence in the Hiwassee Dam Community of Cherokee County North Carolina. Pursuant to that information an investigation was conducted in which Verner was identified as the suspect which lead to his October 30th, 2018 arrest.

Harry James Verner is currently being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center for First Degree Statutory Sexual Offense with a Child and Taking Indecent Liberties with a Child. Verner’s secure bond is currently $200,000.00. Verner currently has November 08th, 2018 District Court date.

Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “We thank the Cherokee County Schools, and the District Attorney’s Office for their cooperation and assistance in this investigation. These are difficult cases for all concerned. Because of the age of the victim and the nature of the crime there will be no further press releases from this office.”

Andrews man arrested for sexual assault of a minor

MURPHY, N.C. — Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the May 25, 2018, arrest of 33-year-old Ryan Alexander Hamilton, of Andrews, North Carolina, for charges stemming from a sexual assault investigation.

Following a May 5, 2018, report of a sexual assault of a minor female child committed in the town of Andrews, North Carolina, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation, which included the assistance of the HAVEN Child Advocacy Center. From that investigation, Hamilton was identified as a suspect in the case. Information gathered during the investigation was presented to the North Carolina Magistrate, who issued warrants for the arrest of Hamilton.

Ryan Alexander Hamilton was arrested at his residence without incident. He was taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center where the magistrate set a $10,000 secure bond for the charges of sexual battery and assault on a female. Hamilton is currently incarcerated at the detention center awaiting a June 12, 2018, District Court date.

Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated, “We want to reach out and thank the staff of HAVEN for their invaluable assistance they provide, not only in this particular case, but in all the cases involving our youth!”

Murphy Man Sentenced to 29 years in Prison for Child Sexual Assualt

Murphy, N.C. — Timothy Russell Rung, 42, of Murphy, pled guilty to Statutory Sexual Offense in Cherokee County Superior Court presided over by the Honorable Gary Gavenus on November 13th, 2017.

In November 2015, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint that Timothy Rung had committed a sexual assault on a minor. Pursuant to that allegation an investigation was conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office which involved the Cherokee County Department of Social Services, HAVEN Child Advocacy Center, and the 30th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Gavenus sentenced Rung to a maximum of 29 years in prison, and he will serve at least 20 years before he is eligible for release. Upon his release from prison, Rung will be monitored by a satellite GPS tracking system, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, and he is prohibited from ever having contact with the victim.

“This conviction keeps a very dangerous child predator off the streets while he serves a lengthy prison sentence and sends a strong message to the community that the District Attorney’s Office places the highest priority on protecting our children. I commend all of the dedicated professionals who partner with the District Attorney’s Office to give a strong voice to our most vulnerable victims. Congratulations on a job well done,” said District Attorney Ashley Welch.

Sheriff Palmer (said), “ This is some great teamwork by some very dedicated individuals. We echo District Attorney Welch’s sentiments and will continue to fight those who attempt to rob our youth of their innocence.”

Dallas Dwayne Carringer pled guilty to assault with a deadly weapon

MURPHY, N.C. — Dallas Dwayne Carringer, 25, of Murphy pled guilty to assault with a
deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in Cherokee County Superior Court
presided over by the Honorable Gary Gavenus on Nov. 13, 2017.

In May 2017, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Candy
Mountain Road in the Hiwassee Dam community of Cherokee County to a report of an
individual being shot. At the culmination of the investigation, Carringer was arrested.

Judge Gavenus sentenced Carringer to not less than 67 months nor more than 93 months in
prison.

Sheriff Palmer stated, “This was some outstanding work by individuals in my office who
quickly made an arrest. We thank District Attorney Welch and her staff on teaming up with us
to present a case and bring Carringer to justice.”

GEORGIA MEN ARRESTED AFTER HOME INVASION

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the January 20, 2017 arrest of 20 year old Christian Pelicie-Mederos, 23 year old Selburn Abraham Ridley, 19 year old Monte Terrell Stewart, 19 year old Chevez Jamar Herron, and 23 year old Marquez Deshaun Hall, all who reported Atlanta Georgia addresses, for charges stemming from a home invasion in the Andrews Community on January 19th, 2017.

At about 9:45 pm January 19th, 2017 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence north of Andrews North Carolina to a report of shots fired. As the responding deputy was arriving in the area the vehicle that had been described containing the individuals that had broken into a residence was found disabled on the roadway. The vehicle was occupied by the five individuals and upon the approach of the responding deputy two of the individuals fled on foot. Two officers with the Andrews Police Department, additional deputies and investigators with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office arrived and all five of the individuals were apprehended. Among the items seized at the scene was firearms, illegal controlled substances and a large amount of U.S. currency.

Pelicie-Medros, Ridley, Stewart, Herron and Hall were all booked into the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office for ROBBERY WITH DANGEROUS WEAPON, ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON, FIRST DEGREE BURGLARY, and RESISTING PUBLIC OFFICER. All five are currently housed at the Cherokee County Detention Center under $100,000.00 secure bond. Herron has an additional $100,000.00 secure bond for charges from another incident in Clay County during 2016.

Sheriff Palmer stated “We have not completed our investigation but have some good indication why these individuals were in Cherokee County. We are continuing our investigation and are checking additional leads and information. I want to thank the officers of the Andrews Police Department for their assistance. I would like to remind the public that we appreciate any assistance they can provide but highly discourage any activities that would place them in harm’s way!”
