NCHSAA extends dead period until June 15th

Sports, Team FYN Sports

The North Carolina High School Board of Directors held a meeting Monday night, May 25th, where the decision was made to extend the Coronavirus dead period until June 15th.

Originally the dead period was set to be over on June 1st, however the vote to extend it was unanimous. NCHSAA commissioner Que Tucker held a press conference for members of the media at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Tucker said that the NCHSAA plans to allow all sports to resume when the dead period ends, but there will be restrictions and no contact will be allowed.

When asked about fall sports Tucker said that the NCHSAA is moving forward as if fall sports will begin on August 1st. Currently the NCHSAA isn’t considering moving sports seasons.

The commissioner stated, “We don’t think it is even wise to begin talking about moving sports seasons right now, “We’re not really entertaining that.” However, the NCHSAA has come up with a plan if fall sports are unable to start on time. It could be a shortened regular season or a reduced number of playoff teams, but the change of one season does not mean

that other seasons will be altered.

Here are some key takeaways from the press conference:

  • NCHSAA plans to allow all sports to resume when the June 15th deadline hits, not just a select few. No contact will be allowed and there will be restrictions from the state level.
  • NCHSAA says that schools and athletic departments should be using this time to gather things such as gloves, masks, cleaning supplies and sanitizer in abundance in order to safely operate practices and reduce the risk of Coronavirus.
  • North Carolina schools will receive guidelines no later than one week after the dead period ends.
  • No change has been made to the realignment calendar as the by-laws require realignment to happen every four years, and this is the fourth year.
  • The NCHSAA realizes that it is impossible to stop every student-athlete from contracting the Coronavirus, but says they are being very diligent in trying to stop the spread and that is why there was no fuss in terms of moving the dead period another 2 weeks.
  • The NCHSAA has taken an 8-10% hit financially speaking because of the Coronavirus.

The NCHSAA also sent out an email to members of the association, in which it read “If pandemic conditions in NC continue to improve, summer activities could begin June 15th.”

Bulldogs fall to Swain, battle with Blue Ridge next

BRYSON CITY, NC – With several Bulldogs out due to injury and the roster already short, a strong all-around effort wasn’t enough as the Murphy High soccer team fell 4-0 at Swain County on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

The injuries forced more than a few players to play out of their normal positions, making an already difficult task that much harder, according to Justin Butler, head coach for Murphy (2-5, 1-2 Smoky Mountain 1-A).

“The guys all gave it a solid effort, despite several having to play positions they aren’t used to,” Butler said after the game.

Replacement options and substitutions aren’t much of an option for the Bulldogs, so when a player does go down, it’s not as simple as running in the next guy.

Butler said that he’s going to begin training players in different positions as the season continues to progress.

“We will continue to train and get guys more comfortable in different positions and be ready for our match against Blue Ridge on Monday,” Butler said.

The team will certainly have to be ready if they hope to pull an upset Monday, Oct. 7.

The Bulldogs are slated to welcome region-foe Blue Ridge Early College, from Cashiers, to Murphy at 6 p.m., Monday.

The Bobcats (6-4, 2-1) are the defending region champions and have been absolutely dominant against the Bulldogs in recent years.

In two wins last season, Blue Ridge outscored Murphy 7-3. Since 2015, the Bulldogs have been outscored 40-9 by the Bobcats in nine meetings.

The last time the Bulldogs took down Blue Ridge was in October 2013. Murphy won 4-3 in that game, but then lost to the Bobcats in the postseason to end the year.

This season, Blue Ridge is led by senior Colton Taylor and junior Jacob Pressler, who play in the mid-field.

Advance boil-water advisory issued by Town of Murphy

Murphy NC, WATER
Town of Murphy

MURPHY, NC – A boil-water advisory has been issued in advance for those effected by the scheduled water outage in Murphy beginning Thursday evening. Town Manager Chad Simons put out a statement Tuesday, Oct. 1, warning of the advisory.

In order to connect new taps to the system, customers of the Town of Murphy’s water system in the Peachtree area, located off of Hwy. 141 near the future location of the new nursing home, may experience “periods of low pressure and outages.”

Normal water and sewer services are expected to be restored by 7 a.m., Friday morning, Oct. 4.

Once that happens, a boil-water advisory will be in effect.

The period of low pressure increases the risk of bacteria being introduced into the water system.

Water samples will then be tested to see if the water is safe for human consumption. Results from those tests are expected back Saturday afternoon, Oct. 5, according to Simons’ statement issued Tuesday.

Simons said the all-clear would be announced as soon as was possible Saturday, both online and through the 911 Cherokee County Emergency Management text/phone alert system.

From the time water is restored Oct. 4 until the all clear is given, residents are advised to boil all water used for human consumption or to use bottled water. Keeping water at a rolling boil for one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water, according to the statement.

Junior Kenneth Parker, pictured above, scored the game-tying goal for the Murphy High Bulldogs (2-4, 1-1 Smoky Mountains 1-A) in a 2-1 victory at Highlands on Monday, Sept. 30.

HIGHLANDS, NC – A late goal proved to be the difference Monday, Sept. 30, as the Murphy High boys soccer team notched their first conference win of the season by taking down Highlands 2-1 in a big upset on the road.

Late goal earns win.

Bulldogs head coach Justin Butler.

The win is the first in seven years for Murphy against Highlands, according to head coach Justin Butler.

The Bulldogs (2-4, 1-1 Smoky Mountain 1-A) fell behind a goal in the first half, but managed to draw even in the second half before a last-minute goal led to victory.

“The guys ramped up their pressure and intensity at halftime,” Butler said. These guys played with a huge amount of heart and determination. They kept their heads in the game through the very last whistle.”

Late goal earns win

For the second-straight game, Senior Braeden Alexander, pictured above, scored for the Murphy High boys soccer team Monday, Sept. 30, at Highlands. Alexander buried a penalty kick in the closing minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory.

With the score knotted at one goal apiece and nearly a minute remaining in regulation, senior Braeden Alexander managed to bury a penalty kick in the net.

The goal put the Bulldogs up 2-1 and turned out to be the game winner as the defense held on the rest of the way.

The goal is the second on the season for Alexander, who is second on the team in goals scored.

The Bulldogs played well overall in the first half, but managed to find themselves out of position to give up the first goal.

With a much more intense defense in the second half, the Bulldogs returned to shut down the Highlanders and give the offense the opportunity to even the score at one goal each.

Junior Kenneth Parker managed a steal just inside the 18-yard box and put the ball past the keeper to tie the game at one goal each with Highlands (4-4-2, 1-1).

Parker leads the team in goals this season with three.

The Bulldogs are set to take on another conference foe in Swain County (3-6-3, 1-1) Wednesday, Oct. 2. Murphy will travel to Bryson City with the first kick scheduled for 6 p.m.

Murphy water customers to be without service

Town of Murphy

MURPHY, NC. – Water customers of the Town of Murphy located off of Hwy. 141 will be without water from 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3, until 7 a.m., Friday, Oct. 4.

Town Manager Chad Simons confirmed the times of the stoppage Tuesday, Oct. 1. He also confirmed that the stoppage is to allow for the installation of water and sewer taps for the new nursing home.

The nursing home requires one sewer tap and two water taps, accounting for the overnight time frame needed to complete the process.

The stoppage time was selected to cause the least disruption possible for residents.

Water customers located on U.S. 64 Alt. in Peachtree will not be impacted by the stoppage.

Registered sex offender arrested for continued violations of registry

News, Police & Government

MURPHY, N.C. — Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the Nov. 16, 2017, arrest of 39-year-old Jason Boyd Parker for violations of the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry.

In June 2017, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was made aware that Parker, a registered sex offender, was not living at his registered address as he was required to do. Following an investigation, which included monitoring of reported address of Parker, it was determined that he was not living at the address that he had reported and had falsified paperwork in conjunction with his failures. The case was presented to the November 2017 Grand Jury who handed down a two-count indictment for failing to notify of a change of address and falsification of forms.

Parker was arrested at his last reported address without incident and brought to the Cherokee County Detention Center where the North Carolina Magistrate set a $20,000 unsecured bond and a Dec. 11, 2017 court date.

Sheriff Palmer stated, “This is not the first issue we have had with Parker failing to follow his duties in conjunction with the sex offender registry. Ensuring the safety of our community from offenders is a task that we take very seriously and will continue to work to maintain compliance of those individuals who are required to register for sex offenses.”

Sheriff Palmer encourages anyone that has information to report it. To report crime in Cherokee County, you can call the anonymous tip line at 828-837-1344 or email a tip at [email protected] or call 911 if you observe a crime in progress.

MURPHY, N.C.- The Murphy Police Department is actively investigating after a gun and several other questionable items were found at Konehete Park Saturday morning.

In the morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, Alice Miller, a resident of Cherokee County, North Carolina, came upon five items, which included an unloaded pistol, flash light, cell phone, one boot, and a small case, found abandoned at Konehete Park.

Miller immediately called Murphy Police Department with the findings.  Issuing a statement on the incident, Assistant Chief of Police Dustin Smith said:

MPD Officers notified me of the items found in the park on Saturday. MPD Officer Wooten did attempt to locate the owners of the items and determine the reason for the items being in the park. We have not been able to determine that as of this time.  The firearm was not listed in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as a stolen firearm and does not match stolen reports as of now. We will continue to investigate this incident and try to find answers as to why these items were left unattended in the park.”

At this time, MPD does not have a person of interest and have not made any arrests in this case. However, the investigators and law enforcement officers at MPD are working diligently on this case.

“It is important to make sure people are alert and if they see something suspicious to call it in.” Miller wrote in an email regarding the incident. “People should be careful, but not fearful.”

Murphy Man Sentenced to 29 years in Prison for Child Sexual Assualt

Police & Government

The following press release has been issued by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office:

Murphy, N.C. — Timothy Russell Rung, 42, of Murphy, pled guilty to Statutory Sexual Offense in Cherokee County Superior Court presided over by the Honorable Gary Gavenus on November 13th, 2017.

In November 2015, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint that Timothy Rung had committed a sexual assault on a minor. Pursuant to that allegation an investigation was conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office which involved the Cherokee County Department of Social Services, HAVEN Child Advocacy Center, and the 30th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Gavenus sentenced Rung to a maximum of 29 years in prison, and he will serve at least 20 years before he is eligible for release. Upon his release from prison, Rung will be monitored by a satellite GPS tracking system, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, and he is prohibited from ever having contact with the victim.

“This conviction keeps a very dangerous child predator off the streets while he serves a lengthy prison sentence and sends a strong message to the community that the District Attorney’s Office places the highest priority on protecting our children. I commend all of the dedicated professionals who partner with the District Attorney’s Office to give a strong voice to our most vulnerable victims. Congratulations on a job well done,” said District Attorney Ashley Welch.

Sheriff Palmer (said), “ This is some great teamwork by some very dedicated individuals. We echo District Attorney Welch’s sentiments and will continue to fight those who attempt to rob our youth of their innocence.”

County School Board Discusses Dire Need For New, Reliable Buses

Business

MURPHY, N.C. – The Cherokee County Board of Education met Thursday night, Nov. 9, to discuss many items on the agenda. One of the biggest items of the night was introduced by board member, Winfield Clonts, for the approval to use $270,000 from the half-cent sales tax fund to purchase new activity buses for the school system.

“I can’t imagine using one of these older buses, and something happening to the brakes or something that happened that needs to be replaced. It’s been 20 years; we need to step it up and start replacing these vehicles,” said Clonts.

The Board agreed they needed five activity buses. At $88,954 per bus, the Board felt the half-cent sales tax fund could be used to purchase three and asked the County Commissioners for the other two buses, bringing a total to five new buses for the schools. Special emphasis was made that County Commissioner Cal Stiles be present for the BOE meeting, and he shared the sense of urgency to replace the buses that are currently being used every day.

The current mini-buses in use are from 1998. The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) gives a 20-year or 250,000-mile life expectancy for the county buses. It was noted that the buses are all approaching the end of their expectancies.

As of now, the county currently has 13 buses. That is five mini-buses and eight large buses. Out of the 13 buses, one is out of service.

The Board did discuss how to recycle the used buses once the new ones were purchased. One idea put forth was the possibility to use the buses at the Tri County Early College, or for the middle schools in the county. Also noted was the possibility to sell those buses depending on the condition. The DPI limits for how much a bus can sell. The minimum amount is $2,600.

The potential purchases of the activity buses will be forwarded to the Board of Commissioners for approval.

The next Board of Education meeting will take place on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Central Office at 911 Andrews Rd. Murphy, NC 28906.
