Andrews girls, boys place third at track meet

The Andrews girls and boys track teams both placed third in a meet at Murphy on Wednesday, March 4, with the Lady Wildcats scoring 63 points and the Wildcats scoring 47.5 points.

Union Co. won the girls meet with 93 points, while Murphy won the boys meet with 151.5 points.

Andrews Lady Wildcats TrackFor the Lady Wildcats, Lindy Garrett placed first in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 2 inches and placed second in the discus with a throw of 69 feet, 11 inches.

In the 4X200 meter relay, the team of Abby Hedden, Brooke Phillips, Ravin Wright, and Juliana Aiken placed second with a time of 1 minutes, 58.4 seconds.

Kaylin Ellis took second place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.3 seconds, while Sydney Postell was third with a time of 58.8 seconds for Andrews.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Kaylin Ellis placed third with a time of 21.9 seconds, while Wright placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14 seconds.

The team of Hedden, Phillips, Wright, and Ellis placed third in the 4X100 meter relay with a time of 55.9 seconds.

Phillips also took third in the 200 with a time of 29.7 seconds.

Aiken, Ellis, Postell, and Emily Mealer teamed up to take third placed in the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 5:18.2.

Postell also added a third-place finish in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 4 inches.

For the Wildcats, the team of Tucker Holloway, Gage Gillespie, Kabe Ellis, and Angelo Scionti took first place in the 4X200 meter relay with a time of 1:35.7 and took first place in the 4X100 meter relay with a time of 46.4 seconds.

Gillespie also added a second-place finish in the 200 with a time of 24.8 seconds and a second-place finish in the 100 with a time of 12 seconds for Andrews.

In the shot put, Makhi Smith was second with a throw of 39 feet.

Kabe Ellis is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Wildcats!

Kabe Ellis is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Wildcats!

Ellis, a 5-foot-9 junior point guard, went off for 41 points in a win at Big Smoky Mountain 1-A opponent Swain Co. on Friday, Dec. 6, in a 90-69 win for Andrews (3-0, 2-0).

He also added three rebounds, five assists, and six steals in the win.

Ellis is averaging 20.3 points per game this season, which is second on the team.

Earlier in the week, Ellis had an all-around strong game at home against region-foe Rosman on Tuesday, Dec. 3. In that game, Ellis scored seven points to go with three rebounds, five assists, and three steals in the Wildcats/ 69-22 victory.

For his efforts, Ellis is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Wildcats!

 

To be considered for the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week, a player must play in all games the team plays during that week and must not have any unsportsmanlike conduct (ejections, etc.). Stats considered for Player of the Week run from Monday through Saturday, with Player of the Week being revealed Sunday each week.

The Wildcats from Andrews posted their first Big Smokey Mountain 1-A victory last night, taking down Rosman 69-22 at home.

Junior Tucker Holloway scored 23 points in the win against Rosman.

Andrews (2-0, 1-0) was led by junior Tucker Holloway, who scored 23 points and added seven rebound in the win. Holloway is scoring 20 points per game so far this season through two games.

Junior Gavin Wilson scored nine, while fellow juniors Spencer Bateman and Bryson Holloway each added eight points in the win. Bryson Holloway also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.

Junior Kabe Ellis scored seven points, while adding five assists and three steals.

Andrews is trying to improve upon a 19-8 overall record from last season. The Wildcats went 9-3 in region play to place second in the conference. The Wildcats fell in the first round of the state playoffs a year ago.

In the win against Rosman, junior Gage Gillespie scored six, while senior Landon White put up four. Seniors Jose Martinez and junior Aidan O’Dell each chipped in two points in the victory.

Up next for the Wildcats is a visit to Swain Co. for another region game. Tip-off for that match-up is set for 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6, in Bryson City.

 

Cats fall in heartbreaker at Hayesville

Landon White and Tucker Holloway rushed for a combined 222 yards but it was not enough for the Cats to defeat a determined Hayesville Yellow Jacket team Friday night in Hayesville.

With what may be the final playoff spot on the line the Jackets scored first on a 1 yard run by Blake McClure. The extra point was good and the Jackets took the lead.

The Cats responded with a long drive capped of by a 1 yard touchdown run by Tucker Holloway at the 4:51 mark.

But in a pivotal moment and what would be a foretaste of the kick blocking feast to come, the Jackets blocked the extra point making the score after the first quarter 7-6 with the Jackets on top.

Both teams moved the ball in the second quarter with each team putting up 14 points. The first half ended with Hayesville leading 21-20.

Neither team was able to score in the entire second half, but as the final minute played out the Cats drove to the Jacket 12 yard line with just 11 seconds left.

The Cats lined up for a Holloway field goal attempt that was blocked and sealed the all important conference victory for the Jackets. The Cats return to Hugh Hamilton Stadium Friday night (Oct. 25) to host Copper Basin in a Homecoming match up. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Thunder and lightning lead the Wildcats to victory in North Georgia

Landon White and Gavin Wilson rushed for a combined 333 yards as the Andrews Wildcats downed the North Georgia Falcons in Friday night action in North Georgia.

The Cats got on the board first with a 22 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tucker Holloway to the speedy Gage Gillespie. The Falcons started the scoring in the second quarter with touchdown runs of 30 and 49 yards. Gavin Wilson capped a long Wildcat drive with a one yard touchdown run to end the first half.

The Falcons scored first in the third with a 65 yard pass from Kade Harkness.  The Cats rounded out the scoring in the third with a run of 12 yards by White and a one yard run by Wilson.
In the fourth it was all Wildcats as White powered in the end zone with a one yard touchdown. Quarterback Tucker Holloway scampered for 45 yards and a Wildcat touchdown. Gavin Wilson scored on runs of 15 and 49 yards to put the game out of reach. The Wildcats won the game by a final score of 53-20.
The Cats improve to 2-1 while the Falcons fall to 1-3.  Andrews returns to Hugh Hamilton Stadium this Friday, playing host to Rabun Gap.  Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
