MURPHY, N.C.- The Republican primary election for the new Mayor of Murphy was held on September 13, 2017, to see who would represent the Republican party in the upcoming election.
The final tally revealed Rick Ramsey as the winner of the Republican primary. Fetch Your News contacted Ramsey for a statement on his primary victory.

TWITTERVILLE USA, BABY- Saturday night we paid to see knockout punches, straight rights, jabs, and uppercuts to the body. The heavyweight punches not televised on PPV was the one between basketball hall of famer Dick Vitale and Frontier Corp.
Like most of us planning to watch the overhyped contest between 49-0 Boxer Floyd Mayweather and MMA fighter Conor McGregor, Vitale had friends and family over to watch it in the comfort of their home.
When Vitale and guests discovered there was a problem viewing the high priced special event, they immediately contacted their service provider, Frontier.
Not only was their service interupted and their party on the verge of embarrassment, they could not even get a representive on the phone. This sparked “Dicky V” to “take it to the hole baby!” on the Frontier Corp in the form of an epic Twitter rant that entertained the masses.
This is not the first time I’ve read about a customer being unsatisfied with the customer service provided by Frontier. Here in Cherokee County, N.C. there are petitions circulating calling for other high speed internet companies to “take over” local service areas.

Superintendent Conley thanks Hiwassee Dam Principal Daniel McNabb for memorializing former lifetime teacher William Grady Anderson

CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C.- Superintendent Dr. Jeana Conley publicly thanked Hiwassee Dam Schools, Hiwassee Dam High School, and specifically Hiwassee Dam High School Principal Daniel McNabb, Monday July 31st 2017, during the Cherokee County School Board meeting.
Dr. Conley thanked McNabb, who, in cooperation with alumni memorialized Mr. William Grady Anderson by installing a plaque naming the pavilion in front of the Hiwassee Dam School in his honor.
Anderson’s teaching career began in 1949 where he continued to teach until his retirement in 1995. Dr. Conley also mentioned the gathering as being a really nice event. Anderson passed at the age of 86 in 2014. His obituary, written by Ivie Funeral Home, states, “Grady lived a life of honesty and integrity and taught the same to his students.”

Local ophthalmologist Warns Public about Children’s Eye Safety During Solar Eclipse

CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C.- Local ophthalmologist Dr. Daniel Eichenbaum voiced his concerns over the instantaneous damage the sun can do to people’s maculas (oval-shaped pigmented area near the center of the retina of the human eye) during the upcoming total solar eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017. His concern is focused on children because of their natural curiosity- they WILL look up at the sun during the eclipse. Although it is safe to view the total solar eclipse during totality (only), Dr. Eichenbaum warns that it will be better to be cautious and not view the eclipse without eye protection at any point. Totality will only last about 2 1/2 minutes, so it will be very easy to make a mistake and suffer the consequences of the laser-like power of the sun. The burning damage of looking at the sun is untreatable and can cause blindness. He also points out that most animals will not be at risk because they lack a macula.
Eclipse-viewing glasses are available for purchase at many local businesses and schools for a nominal cost. Regular sunglasses are not enough eye protection during the total solar eclipse.

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners have rescheduled the August 7th board meeting to August 15th. The August 15th meeting will be held at the usual time of 6:30pm at Cherokee County Courthouse, in Downtown Murphy, N.C.
The Board of Commissioners have also canceled its August 21st meeting, in respect to the Great American Solar Eclipse event.

UPDATE: After Andrews High lock down, schools will have early dismissal

UPDATE: Cherokee County Schools made an announcement on Facebook concerning the lock down that is occurring at Andrews High School. The posted announcement reads:
“There is no impending Danger to students in the Andrews area; however, due to parent concern, Andrews area students will be released immediately. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
ANDREWS, N.C.- At about 11:30 a.m. this morning, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department announced that Andrews High School is on lockdown. At this time, it is unsure whether all of the schools in Andrews are on lockdown as well. The announcement posted on Facebook reads:
“The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is aware that Andrews High School is currently in a lock down. This protective measure was taken by the Andrews High School due to a current domestic situation where a non-custodial parent had made statements about coming to the high school and removing a student.
“There is no current information to indicate that the individual who made the statements is on the grounds of the school. Presently all students and staff are safe and secure. The lockdown has been accomplished to ensure continued safety.
“The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is working in conjunction with the Cherokee County Schools Company Police, and the Andrews Police Department continue to work with the school’s staff during this situation.”

Murphy Bulldogs takes the win against East Surry, securing their spot in the last round of the playoffs

MURPHY, N.C.- The Murphy Bulldogs won Friday’s game against the East Surry Cardinals, which secured the bulldogs place in the final regional game being held in Mount Airy this Friday Dec 1, 2017.
As the team captains took the field, the bulldogs won the coin toss, showing the coaches had great faith in their defense. The coaches would not be disappointed. After a strong defensive showing by the Bulldogs, Chase Roberts (#40) ran for 1-yard to put Murphy on the board first, with a 7-0 lead following the perfect PAT by Katelyn Jones.
A few plays follow the kickoff, Tanner Creelman (#25) picked off a pass to give the ball back to the explosive Murphy offense.
Joey Curry (#1) and Slade McTaggert (#32) took turns chopping up the Cardinals on the ground as the Bulldogs pounded the ball upfield, until Curry connected with Micah Nelson (#2) for a 54 touchdown strike. Jones aced the PAT and the Dogs were rolling, 14-0.
Roberts, who plays both sides of the ball, came away with the second interception of the night for the Bulldogs on the next series, and an unsportsmanlike conduct call against the Cardinals put the Dogs right back in scoring position, but they were unable to capitalize on this possession. As the quarter came to a close, Murphy was in control of their own destiny with a 14-0 lead.
With 11:54 remaining in the half, East Surry finally found the end zone, cutting the lead to 7.
It wouldn’t take Murphy long to answer, however, as Devonte Murray (#28) carried the ball from 5 yards out on 3rd down to put Murphy back up by 14. PAT good, 21-7.
Murphy would put another touchdown on the scoreboard before the half, completely dominating on their way to the final four in the 1AA State Championship brackets.
Bulldogs McTaggart (#32) rushed for a team-high 180 yards and two touchdowns. It was the Bulldogs #40 Chase Roberts who lead the team with three touchdowns, of which two being scored in the first half of the game.
Bulldogs senior QB #1 Joey Curry completed 6-of-12 passing attempts with one touchdown in the game. The Bulldogs once again showed their strength on the ground, with a rush-heavy offense, rushing for 437 yds, with 103 pass yds respectively.
East Surry struggled on the field with several penalty flags being thrown for unsportsmanlike behavior and personal fouls. After all was said and done, East Surry somehow managed to score four player ejections from the game for these penalties, but falling short on the win against Murphy.
In the end, the Bulldogs won the game with a final score of 49-27.
The Murphy Bulldogs will go toe to toe with the Mount Airy Granite Bears (13-0,5-0) for a spot at the state championships. If the Bulldogs defeat Mount Airy on Friday, then this will be the Bulldogs 12th time since 1972 going to the state championships. It was freezing cold last night when the Murphy Bulldogs (10-2,5-1) played against South Stanly (5-7,4-3)in the first round of playoffs. You could tell the Bulldogs were ready for a battle before the game started. The boys were pumped along with the coaches as they embarked on their journey towards the first game of the playoffs.
Murphy won the coin toss, but elected that South Stanly kick off with Murphy to receive the ball. #89 Travis Seabolt returned the ball to the Bulldogs 47 for 12 yards. With 7:50 mins left in the 1st Q, the Bulldogs scored the first touchdown and the PAT was good by #3 Katelyn Jones.
#10 Kaivon Allen scored a 21 yard touchdown. A two-point conversion was attempted and made good by #10 as well. QB #1 Joey Curry scored the third touchdown, but the two-point conversion that was attempted by #32 Slade McTaggart was unsuccessful. This bringing the score to 21-0.
In the 2nd Q, #1 Joey Curry threw a pass incomplete to #12 Hagan Newton to the Bulls 17 yard line for 0 yards . A penalty was handed to South Stanly for defense roughing the passer for 15 yards.
It wasn’t as if the Bulldogs needed any help with scoring, but the Rebel Bulls scored a safety for which brought the already embarrassing score to the 30-0, Bulldogs. It seemed as if South Stanly came back in the second half a little more charged, scoring 13 points. Unfortunately the possibility to win was long gone in the first half of the game.
The final score was 44-13, Bulldogs! Murphy will face off against North Stanly in New London, NC for the second round of playoffs, this Friday November 17th, 2017, with kick off starting at 7:30pm.

Labor Day dates back to 1882, when the very first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City, NY, sponsored by the Central Labor Union. It was introduced in municipal ordinances in 1885, then later in state legislation, and as a state bill in NY.
The first state to make it a law was Oregon in 1887, then Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York signed it into law by the end of the decade. By 1890, Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania adopted it, as well. Twenty-three other states signed it in 1894, and in that same year, Congress passed the act that it would be a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
But what was the reason behind this holiday? This holiday weekend celebrates the contribution by American workers to our country’s strength and prosperity. We still aren’t sure of who exactly thought of the idea, whether it was Peter J. McGuire of the Brotherhood of Carpenters, or Matthew Maguire of the International Association of Machinists.
Regardless of who exactly founded the holiday, what stands as important is that it celebrates the American worker. Without our workers, our country would be a very different place. Our workers are the backbone of the country, making things happen and producing the stuff on which our country is built. So, this Labor Day, enjoy your burger, but know that it’s another opportunity for us to take pause and feel gratitude for the blood, sweat, and tears of our workers. Thank you, American workers, all around the country and throughout time.

Cherokee County Sheriff offers advice for local churches during solar eclipse event

CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C.- Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer offers local churches some advice for how to proceed during the upcoming total solar eclipse event on Aug 21, 2017. Churches will need to discuss and decide for themselves how they will prepare for and weather the actual event, but he does offer some thoughts. Churches generally have large, open parking lots that people looking to get off the roads will gravitate towards so that they can park and safely view the eclipse. He states that churches and businesses with large lots should leave entrances open to help alleviate traffic and congestion, because many times people gain entrance despite chains or other blocking devices. With people comes the need to use the facilities, so churches will need to decide whether they will open their doors to the public to use restrooms and get a respite from the heat and sun. He advises that if churches do allow public access to their facilities, they should only open certain designated areas and close off the rest of the buildings. Sheriff Palmer also notes that large events like the eclipse will leave the county with “eclipse refugees,” that is, people who have become stranded through various circumstances. Churches and businesses, like homes, should be watched over to prevent the possibility of break-ins and theft if left unattended.
