There was an Electrical Storm in Murphy Friday Night

As the clouds made their way towards the stadium, so did the die hard Murphy Bulldog family. An hour before the game the seats started to fill, the atmosphere started to gain more, and more power.
20 minutes before kick-off, the “Youth Dogs”, the younger Bulldogs, were on the field awaiting their champions, the clouds began to scatter, yet the Thunder remained, the thunderous 12th man were ready for a battle against the Bobcats of Gilmer. The starters were announced, and the lightning was unleashed.
The Gilmer Bobcats won the coin toss and that was all they were going to win on this glorious evening under the bright Friday Night Lights on David Gentry field. Bobcats defer, game on. The stage has been set, Gilmer kicks the ball to Murphy, and so it has begun.
“Captain” Curry, play-action fake, looks right, looks left, the electricity in his arm gathers strength, he reaches back, and fires a lighting bolt pass 30-yards down the field to his wide-receiver Travis “The Atlantic Lighting” Seabolt racing down the sideline, he catches the pass with both hands, taking it in for a 58-yard touchdown reception! “Miss Automatic” Katelyn Jones misses the extra point, shrugs it off, Dogs up 6-zip two plays in to the game.
They say lighting doesn’t strike the same spot twice, they were wrong! The thunderous 12th man exploded as “Captain” Curry found “The Atlantic Lighting” Seabolt for their second connection of the game. The atmosphere is electric, the Bulldogs are running on a fully charged mega-battery not of this world. Jones forces the pig skin through the uprights, bringing us to a 13-0 Bulldogs early 1st quarter lead. 
The Murphy Bulldogs defense was in complete control of the Gilmer offense. After forcing the Bobcats to punt the football, Murphy marches down the field into the Bobcats redzone. “It’s not marble, it’s Slade” McTaggart gets the ball, hits the hole, breaks it outside, and bolts into the endzone from 16-yards out leaving the Bobcats in a cloud of static electricity and disbelief. Bulldogs go up by 20 still in the 1st quarter of play.
The combination of a lightning fast football team, and a thunderous 12th man leads to mistakes, Gilmer fumbles, and Bulldog Cory “Mad Cow” Farmer recovers the ball for a Bulldogs, first down! Threatening from just inside the redzone, Kadrian McRae electromagnetically teleports himself into the endzone, if you blinked, you missed him. 20-yard rushing touchdown for McRae, get that man a sandwich!
They were giving out lighting bolts for lunch at Murphy High School on Friday, clearly McRae had seconds, McRae strikes again, cuts right, turns up field, holds down the turbo boost button, and he was gone. 23-yards and 1.5 seconds later he was in for 6. “Miss Automatic” Jones hits the extra point, it’s 34-0 Bulldogs and it’s not even halftime yet. Get Gilmer some electrical tape for their gloves, Bulldogs are shocking.
The offensive line was a hurricane force thunderstorm Friday night, and the Bobcats had no choice but to seek shelter. Devonte “Show me the Murray” Murray, behind #HurricaneOffensiveLine, tidal waves it in from 23-yards out with ease to put the dogs up 41-0 after the successful extra point try by Jones.
More Bulldogs defense causing all kinds of problems for the Bobcats, Bulldogs get the ball back, and “it’s not marble, it’s Slade” McTaggart rumbles his way in from 15 yards out, boarding up the last of Gilmer’s windows. We hope the Bobcats have plenty of water and canned goods for the ride home, this Bulldogs Thunderstorm was too much for the Bobcats. The Bulldogs send in the pups to wrap up the second half, and that would be the final score of the game.
Smokey Mountain Conference play starts next week with Robbinsville coming to town this Friday.
Expect more of the same intensity, if not more, out of the Bulldogs this Friday. They have been a team possessed since their heartbreaking loss in Franklin a few weeks ago.
Curry is ready to throw the football through a mountain, and McTaggart would tackle a tornado if he had to. Check the voltage meter on the field the last two games played by the Murphy Bulldogs, the reading is off the charts!

Murphy Bulldogs easily handle Greenwood Raptors

MURPHY, N.C.- On an overcast day, the Murphy Bulldogs hosted the Greenwood Raptors for a rescheduled 2 p.m. football game at Bob Hendrix stadium today.
The Bulldogs defense and offense came ready to play. There was a focus in the eyes of the Bulldogs today we didn’t see last week. After the first quarter, it was already looking like a blow out, with the Bulldogs scoring the first 27 points to the Raptors 0.
The final result would be a called game in favor of the Bulldogs, with the game ending at the end of the 3rd quarter, with the Final Score Murphy Bulldogs 55, and the Greenwood Raptors 16.
Highlight of the game was #3 Katelyn Jones kicking 7 extra points! She is my #TeamFYNSportsPlayeroftheWeek !

Cherokee County Big Sweep Planned for End of September, 2017
Outdoors August 15, 2017CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C.- The Annual Cherokee County Big Sweep will be held at Hanging Dog Campground on September 30, 2017. Each year, this event is an opportunity for residents to come together and clean up Cherokee County’s beautiful water resources. Last year, the event brought in 15,720 pounds of trash from Hiwassee Lake!
This year, there will be four boats provided by Duke’s Marina. Personal boats are welcome- please contact the organizers before the event. Trash can also be collected from the Payne Street Boat Ramp in downtown Murphy, NC, but the main event is at the campground. If you plan to participate from downtown, please check in at the campground first.

Security training provided for places of worship

MURPHY, N.C.- The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office announced via Facebook Sheriff Derrick Palmer will be providing security training to places of worship this holiday season.
The announcement on Facebook reads:
The North Carolina Sheriff’s Association (NCSA) has convened a group of sheriffs and sheriff’s personnel from across the state to develop training materials that will help places of worship create security plans to keep citizens safe during the holiday season.
The group was established by Sheriff Hubert A. Peterkin (Hoke County, N.C.), President of the NCSA, at the suggestion of Sheriff John W. Ingram V (Brunswick County, N.C.) as a result of recent attacks at community gatherings and in places of worship in the U.S. and abroad.
The group’s goal was to prepare materials to be used by sheriffs and their personnel to train places of worship to develop security plans designed to minimize harm done in the event of an active shooter.
“When you’re a sheriff, you have to be prepared for many different types of events in order to effectively protect the citizens that you serve. In light of last summer’s tragic attack in a Charleston (S.C.) church, North Carolina sheriffs from the mountains to the coast have received requests to provide training at churches and other places of worship regarding appropriate security measures,” said Peterkin.
The NCSA Church Security Group worked this fall to develop materials that all sheriff’s offices in North Carolina can use to provide training, upon request, to places of worship in their county. The training is designed to teach church personnel and members how to attempt to prevent critical incidents and how to react if a critical incident occurs during worship services.
“We have typically felt safe in our communities without much thought of danger in our places of worship. However, recent events have shown that no community is safe. From Charleston, South Carolina, to Sutherland Springs, Texas, we see that no community is exempt from tragedy. It is our duty to provide training to any place of worship that desires to be proactive and help make our communities as safe as possible,” said Sheriff Palmer.
Topics discussed in the training materials include:
– Conducting a Security Risk Assessment;
– Developing a Place of Worship Security Plan;
– What to do during the Critical Incident;
– What to do immediately after the Critical Incident; and
– The need to provide Crisis Intervention Stress Management afterward.
“The sheriff’s of North Carolina are dedicated to assisting the churches and houses of worship in their counties with security and safety training to improve public safety across our state. A place of worship should be a place of peace and a safe haven,” said Peterkin.
Sheriff Palmer will be leading this training on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at 7 p.m. The location will be at Little Brasstown Baptist Church 6120 Harshaw Rd, Brasstown, NC 28902. All citizens are invited to attend.

The annual Harshaw Rd. synchronized Christmas light display will be taking place from now until New Year’s Eve with weather permitting. Any proceeds made will go directly to Toys for Tots. Hours of the display are Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The display is located at 3351 Harshaw Rd. in Murphy.
The Polar Express began Nov. 10 and will operate through December 31.
The round-trip excursion is a little over an hour long and is set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack. Guest will enjoy warm cocoa and a treat while enjoying the train ride. Santa Claus joins riders on The Polar Express for each ride, greeting all children and presenting them with a special gift, just as in the story, along with their own silver sleigh bell. Murphy First Baptist Church will hold its 41st annual Singing Christmas Tree. This event is free to the public and all are encouraged to attend. Dec. 9 through 11. Saturday’s performance is a matinee beginning at 4 p.m. while Sunday and Monday performances are slated to start at 7 p.m. First Baptist Church is located at 517 Hiwassee St. in Murphy.
Santa Claus will be at Bojangles in Murphy from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9. Attendees bringing a toy for Toys for Tots will receive a free sausage, ham, gravy or jelly biscuit for children ages 12 and under. Murphy High School will be setting the tone for the special visit with the school chorus singing Christmas carols.

Royce Peterson, Caleb Irwin and Nathan Barolet signs letters of intent for college scholarships

Murphy High School had a impressive turnout for seniors to sign the letters of intent that were handed out on Nov. 8, 2017.
A couple weeks later, I had the privilege of sitting down with a few of Murphy Bulldogs best athletes. Royce Peterson, Caleb Irwin and Nathan Barolet were three of the scholarship recipients, who signed their letters of intent that day.
Royce Peterson love for baseball started at the age of four. He plays third baseman, which he said is his favorite position. Royce credits his success to his family and coaches, but one coach in particular is his one of his travel baseball coaches Tom Paciorek.
Paciorek was a MLB player from the 1960’s-1980’s. Paciorek has used his professional knowledge of baseball to help Peterson with his swing and form at the plate.
Peterson has maintained a 4.15 GPA while staying busy with travel baseball along with playing high school baseball. He signed a 4 yr scholarship to Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga. I asked him what he foresees his first year in college to be like, he said that he will be busy with training and his studies.
Caleb Irwin stepped on the baseball diamond at the age of four. Throughout high school, he has maintained a 3.9 GPA while staying busy with his high school and travel baseball activities.
He is a right handed pitcher for the Bulldogs varsity baseball team and his travel baseball team, with a clocked pitch speed of 88 mph. When I asked Caleb how he plans his first year at college to be, he responded with “It will take some adjusting, but I will be focusing on baseball, and my studies. That is the most important.”.
Irwin will be attending Lawson State College, in Birmingham, AL. He will major in sports management along with keeping up with his college baseball career.
Nathan Barolet is a varsity baseball player who came to Murphy High School from Hayesville High, for the possibility for more chances in his baseball career.
Having changed schools a few times, Barolet has never let it kill his passion for baseball and has kept his GPA up. He has outdone himself by standing out in new schools and proving what he has to offer.
Gardner-Webb along with quite a few other colleges including UNC reached out to Nathan with scholarship offers. However, Gardner-Webb was more appealing to Nathan because he felt it was the best fit for him.
Nathan is undeclared for right now, but he plans to focus his first year of college on prepping himself for the first season of college baseball.
After sitting down and talking with these young men about their dreams and goals in life, I have to say one of the things that stands out about all three of them is how they have their priorities in check. The fact that these young men manage to accomplish this incredible high school baseball career, which led them to college, is absolutely amazing.

Convicted felon found with semi-automatic guns and drugs in Murphy

MURPHY, N.C.- Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced that on Nov. 25, 2017, Victor Thomas Jacob Runge, 23, of Murphy, North Carolina, was arrested for charges involving illegal possession of drugs and a stolen gun.
On or about Nov. 25, 2017, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was assisting the North Carolina Highway Patrol who was operating a driver’s license checkpoint. As Runge, who came through the checkpoint, was questioned concerning his driver’s license, Runge was observed reaching for something in the center console. During a incident to arrest search of the vehicle, a stolen semi-automatic pistol was located, which later was identified as being stolen from Athens, Tennessee. Additionally in the search, a quantity of suspected methamphetamine was seized along with U.S. currency. Additional investigation revealed that Runge was previously convicted of a felony and was not allowed to have a firearm in his possession.
Runge was transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center where the North Carolina Magistrate set a $30,000 secure bond for the following charges: felon in possession of firearm. possession of stolen firearm, possession of methamphetamine, carrying concealed weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia. Runge is expected to appear in Cherokee County District Court on Dec. 5, 2017.
Sheriff Palmer stated, “This had the potential of a very bad ending. We do not know what this individual’s intentions were by reaching toward the console where the gun was found, but alert officers were able to diffuse the situation and get drugs and guns off the street. This is a great example of the teamwork we enjoy with fellow agencies in Cherokee County. We appreciate the cooperative effort of the Troopers and all the law enforcement agencies that help keep Cherokee County safe and secure.”

Murphy, N.C.- Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year! There are numerous events in the Cherokee County area to provide fun and safe Halloween festivities for you and your family. If musical’s are your thing, then you have to check out The Addams Family musical at the Valleytown Cultural Arts Center in downtown Andrews, N.C. October 27-29th. As for trick or treating, below is a list of things going on for Halloween around Cherokee County, N.C. Also, check out the Chamber of commerce for more info about all events coming up!
- Duke Street in Murphy, N.C. on the 31st from 5-7 (the town will close off the area so no traffic!)
- Downtown Murphy, N.C., businesses will be handing out candy from their store front. Usually starts around 4pm
- In Marble on the 28th, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of Cherokee County will be handing out candy at the community center.
- Lots of Trunk or Treating events at local churches.
- On Saturday, Oct. 28th from 1-4pm, bring your fur babies to Howl-O-Ween Pet Fest at Andrews Rec Park hosted by Andrews Veterinary Hospital.
- Andrews will be having their Trick or Treating on the Main, October 28th from 5-7pm

Business September 21, 2017MURPHY, N.C.- September 19, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. the Board of Commissioners held a meeting on Tuesday, discussing many of the county’s tumult topics.
Some of these topics included finances and budget, taxes, and animal control.
Representatives from many fields were present to verify budget spending and cash flow. During this portion of the meeting, the Cherokee County Detention Center requested an amount from their influx of recent funds to use towards new equipment to improve the centers operation, one element being a new transport vehicle.
Many other budgets were drawn out, this just being one of the longer topics of interest. The most considerable topic of the evening consisted of those concerned with animal control.
Sheriff Derrick Palmer spoke in terms for the proposed animal control plans for the county. His speech included animal owner responsibilities, animal control officer operation, and a budget for all of the considered expenses it entails.
Public figures also stood up and spoke on their thoughts about the plan. The meeting overall disclosed many important topics to be considered to help improve the county as a whole. Tune into the video below for more in-depth information.

Cherokee County discusses how to implement the new statute mandating gap billing for all motor vehicle registration gaps

Murphy, Cherokee Co, N.C.- At the July 17, 2017, Cherokee County Board of Commissioners meeting, Eddie Allen presented an overview of the new statute on gap billing of motor vehicle registrations. A new statute just approved by the state of NC mandates that counties must begin billing and collecting for all gaps in motor vehicle registrations. For instance, if a person’s vehicle tag expires on May 1, and the motor vehicle is unregistered until July 1, the county must now calculate and bill the owner for those two unregistered months. This process is estimated to become a billing nightmare, in the words of Allen, because it will be very labor intensive, as the bills must be calculated by hand. In the past, the county was able to selectively bill and collect based on amount, only electing to bill those vehicles that owed a tangible amount of money. This new statute mandates that ALL gaps must be billed, so it is foreseen that many very small bills, some of $0.50 or just $1.00 will need to be billed as well. Allen suggests raising the current minimum amount billed from $2 to a flat $5 to cover the expenses involved with billing. He worries that it will be a losing proposition that will generate much confusion and take an inappropriate amount of time for billing. A bill generated on Sept. 1, 2017, won’t become past due until the next year, for instance, Jan. 1, 2019. Allen plans to draft a formal resolution to be voted on for approval at an upcoming meeting.

Widespread power outages reported in Tri-State area

MURPHY, N.C.- UPDATE: Union County, Georgia, EMA in conjunction with the American Red Cross and House of Prayer has opened a temporary emergency shelter at House of Prayer Family Life Center located at 145 Bible Camp Circle in Blairsville.
If you are without power, have no alternate heat and need shelter, please travel to the shelter. Please make sure it is safe to travel before doing so as road conditions may be hazardous.
As of 12:50 p.m. Sunday, Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) reported via Facebook that there are still 338 power outages affecting 6,426 members in its coverage area.
This weekend’s winter storm left thousands without power in the Tri-State area. Many have been without power since Friday afternoon.
Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation (BRMEMC) announced via Facebook that crews are working diligently to restore power to the service area.
As of 8 a.m. Sunday, there were a reported 401 outages affecting 13,203 members. Below is a list of areas BRMEMC crews will be working in today:

BRMEMC updated their facebook at 10 a.m. letting customers know that outages are down to 370 with 8,768 customers affected. Crews are making progress in this cold weather.

Murphy Middle, Martins Creek Elementary will compete at FIRST Lego League State Championship
Cherokee County Schools December 4, 2017
CHEROKEE, N.C.- Forty-eight schools across the state competed in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League (FLL) robotics competition hosted by Cherokee High School in Cherokee, North Carolina, Saturday, Dec 2., 2017. The Lego League is the elementary and middle school version of FIRST Robotics.
In the state of North Carolina, North Carolina A&T State University (N.C. A&T) serves as the affiliate partner (AP) for FIRST Lego League and FIRST Tech Challenge.
The theme for this year’s FIRST Lego League competition is hydrodynamics. The teams had to design a robot that would show how to improve the way people find, transport, use or dispose of water.
North Carolina is a two-division championship tournament region between eastern and western North Carolina. The top 13 finalists from both the eastern and western regions, will compete at the state competition.
Only 13 schools from the western division were able to advance to the state competition, and out of those schools, Murphy Middle School and Martins Creek Elementary were two of the schools that will be advancing.
The region that wins at the state competition will then go onto the southeastern competition, which will have teams from several different states in the southeastern United States.

The state championship will be held January 20 and 21, 2018, in Greensboro, North Carolina, on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
