Micah Anderson

Micah Anderson is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Eagles!

Anderson consistently helped the Eagles break the full-court pressure of all three opponents from this week: Fannin Co., Gilmer, and Pickens. Hiwassee Dam played in the annual Thanksgiving tournament in Blue Ridge and Anderson was a consistant presence on defense and offense.

He tied a team-high with 10 points against Gilmer, was second on the team with 11 points against Pickens, and added five points against Fannin Co. in the team’s most lopsided tournament loss.

For his efforts, Anderson is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Eagles!

Eagles show development in tournament

The Eagles from Hiwassee Dam developed quickly in a three-day Thanksgiving tournament at Fannin Co. High in Blue Ridge, GA.

While the Eagles started the tournament with a 21-point loss to the home team Saturday, Nov. 23, they rebounded to give Class 4A’s Gilmer fits through the first three quarters in a loss Monday, Nov. 25, before playing their best game of the tournament in a 13-point loss to Pickens, also from Class 4A.

With less than 200 students and playing in the Little Smoky Mountain 1-A Conference in North Carolina, Hiwassee Dam doesn’t get many chances to play teams from higher classifications.

The Eagles took full advantage of the opportunity and played each game better than the last.

Through the first two quarters against Pickens, who won the tournament with the victory, the Eagles were proving they can play with anyone.

Four players scored in the first and the defense limited the Dragons to just 12 points.

In the second, Micah Anderson scored seven points, Conner Davis added six, and Sam Bradford scored two to keep pace with Pickens’ 15 in the quarter and head into halftime trailing by just three, 27-24.

In the second half, the Dragons (4-0) pulled away from the short-handed Eagles, using depth and height to finally overwhelm the slowing group in the third to build a 10-point lead at 46-36.

The Eagles wouldn’t go quietly as Davis and Bradford continued to attack. The team put 16 points on the board in the final quarter, but couldn’t slow the Pickens offense enough and fell, 65-52.

Davis finished the game with a team-high 17 points, followed by Anderson with 11, Radford Cheek with nine, and Bradford with seven. Jacob Dockery (4), Seth Hooper (2), and Michael Simms (2) rounded out the scoring for the Eagles.

The day before against Gilmer, Anderson and Simms each scored 10, while Cheek put up eight, Davis scored four, and Hooper added three in the 52-35 loss.

Against Fannin Co. in the first game of the tournament, Cheek scored a team-high 15 points, including going 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Cheek was just one of the seven Eagles who scored in the game: Anderson, Simms, and Bradford each scored five, Hooper and Davis each scored four, and Dockery scored three.

Hiwassee Dam fell in the game 62-41.

Anderson, Cheek, and Davis were all named to the all-tournament team for the Eagles.

Hiwassee Dam is slated to begin region play Tuesday, Dec. 3, against Nantahala at home. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

While the Hiwassee Dam girls basketball team had a tough time on the scoreboard during the three-day Thanksgiving tournament at Fannin Co. High in Blue Ridge, GA, last week, the experience is one the team needed.

Coming from the Little Smoky Mountain 1-A Conference in North Carolina, the Lady Eagles don’t play a lot of team from high classifications.

During the tournament, the team faced Fannin Co. from Georgia’s Class 3A, and Gilmer and Pickens from Class 4A.

From left, Kiara Anderson, Chloe Roe, and Katie Gibson were named to the all-tournament team for Hiwassee Dam.

Playing above their classification, against school with as many as five times the students, was a great learning experience for the players according to Hiwassee Dam Head Coach Cutshaw.

“We loved playing in the tournament,” Cutshaw said. “It’s a great experience. We are the smallest 1-A school in North Carolina. We never get to play bigger schools.”

The Lady Eagles (0-4) played their best game of the tournament Tuesday, Nov. 25, against Gilmer.

While Hiwassee Dam lost 41-35, the team was in it throughout and was a real threat to take down the Lady Bobcats (3-1), who ended up second in the tournament.

The Lady Eagles came out ready to battle on both ends of the court as defensive pressure held Gilmer to just 13 points in the period. On offense, Katie Gibson scored four and Chloe Roe hit a 3-pointer to go with a jump shot from Dezaray Adams to keep pace with Gilmer at 13-9.

The defense continued to play well into the second quarter, holding the Lady Bobcats to single-digit scoring with nine points, but the offense stalled.

Katie Raper hit a 3-pointer but the Lady Eagles scored just six points to go into the half down 22-15.

The third quarter was more of the same, with the defense holding the quick-hitting Lady Bobcats offense in check but the offense struggling to score.

Natalie Nichols hit a pair of shots and Raper hit another 3-pointer, and the Lady Eagles trailed 30-25 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, Roe scored four points, Raper hit her third 3-pointer, and Gibson scored three points but Hiwassee Dam just couldn’t close the gap and fell 41-35.

Gibson finished with a team-high 10 points. She led the team in scoring in all three tournament games.

Hiwassee Dam

Kiara Anderson, No. 10, handles the ball for the Hiwassee Dam Lady Eagles against Fannin Co. last Saturday.

Against Pickens (2-2) on the third day of the tournament Tuesday, Nov. 26, Gibson had 19 points. She was one of 10 Lady Eagles to score in the game, which had Pickens take a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never look back. The Dragonettes won 85-49.

Hiwassee Dam played Fannin Co. (4-0) in the first round Saturday, Nov. 23.

Gibson scored 14 in that game, one of nine scorers for the Lady Eagles, but she was the only one in double-digits.

Hiwassee Dam kept the game close in the first half, trailing by just nine going into halftime. But a 17-point third quarter and a 19-point fourth quarter from the Lady Rebels was too much for the Lady Eagles to weather. Fannin Co. won 70-47.

Gibson, Roe, and Kiara Anderson were named to the all-tournament team from Hiwassee Dam.

Hiwassee Dam next visits Highlands at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6 to open region play.
