Rev.  Everett Horace Morrow, age 87, of Murphy went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 2, 2018 at his home. He was a native of Cherokee County and the son of the late Simon Peter and Donnie Baker Morrow. He was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church. Preaching was Everett’s passion. He began preaching 45 years ago and pastored many different churches in the area.       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Morrow; son, Michael Scott Morrow; two brothers, Hobert and Harford Morrow and sister, Lucille Ware.       He is survived by his son, Bruce Morrow of Murphy, daughter, Sharon Brown and husband Dennis of Harrison, TN; brother Attlee Morrow and wife Barbara of Murphy; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.       Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Wednesday December 5, 2018 at  Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Maggie Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Tony Ware will officiate. LOCAL MAN SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX CRIME

Murphy, NC— On December 04th, 2018 Barry Wade Allen, of Murphy North Carolina was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of a minimum term of 17 months to a maximum term of 35 months with 427 days credit for his plea of guilty to the charge of Indecent Liberties with a Child announced Sheriff Derrick Palmer of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. The Honorable Superior Court Judge William H. Coward ordered Allen to register as a sex offender for a period of 30 years and to have no contact with the victim for a lifetime. In June of 2017 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a report of suspected sexual assault committed by Allen. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the HAVEN Child Advocacy Center.

The case was presented to the Grand Jury which met in July 2017 who returned true bills of indictment for Statutory Sex Offense with a Child greater than 13 years of age and defendant 6 years or more older, and Indecent Liberties with a Child.

Allen fled from Cherokee County prior to the true bills being issued. The United States Marshal Fugitive Apprehension Unit assisted in locating and apprehending Allen in Louisiana during the last week of September 2017. Allen waived extradition and returned to Cherokee
County.

Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “These are difficult and trying cases on all concerned. This is an excellent example of how working as a team involving HAVEN Child Advocacy Center, the District Attorney’s Office and utilizing our Federal partners helped bring this case to court.”

Infant Appalonn Dawn Ashe passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her infant brother Linclon Ashe.

She is survived by her parents, Dennis Carroll Ashe and Tabitha Burrell-Ashe; great-grandparents, James and Nancy Cochran and Roger Rhodes; grandparents, Danny and Lisa Cochran and Dennis and Eunice Ashe; brother Ford Ashe; sisters Lislonn Ashe, Eaveyrose Ashe, and Brennan Ashe; aunts and uncles, Matt and Ashely Cochran, Jamie and Sam, and Tasha and Chris Searcy.

Sandra Beverly Taylor Dockery, age 59 of Murphy, NC passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late Basscomb and Hattie Martin Taylor. Sandra was a self-employed logger. She loved to eat, enjoyed gardening, canning, reading and lying in the sun. Sandra also enjoyed hunting bears and hogs. She loved spending time with her family. Sandra was a member of Hanging Dog Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Taylor, Leon Taylor and Alvin Taylor; and one sister, Janet Lance.

She is survived by her husband, Loren Dockery; one son, Cleaston Jeffrey Dockery of Murphy, NC; one brother, Basscomb Taylor Jr.; seven sisters, Kathryn Rogers, Rebecca Graves, Margie Taylor, Jodi Alverson, Dolly Lynetta Iles, Claudia Trotter and Madlyn Wallace; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 2 pm, Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Burial will be held in the Hanging Dog Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason Holderfield, Wallace Sharp, Mike Roper, Doug Farmer, DJ Alverson and Deven Schnuphase.

At 7:30 pm, January 2, 2019, Larry C. Shelton of Hayesville, NC passed away peacefully in the North East Georgia Medical Center after a short illness.

He was a native of Hayesville, NC and the son of the late Grady and Beatrice York Shelton. Larry was drafted into the Army right out of high school where he served a one year tour in Vietnam. He loved his country and was proud to serve. His first job was as a hard rock driller on Franklin Mountain and his last job was the NC Department of Transportation, and many other jobs in between.

He was all about family. Larry loved fly fishing and quite time on the river. He was a guitar picker and singer of songs; he loved country and country gospel songs especially Merle Haggard. Larry was an easy-going mild manner man with an awesome sense of humor which earned him much love and respect for his family and friends. His motto was “keep on picking”.

Larry was a member of the Fires Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Roach Shelton; one daughter, Candy Kirby and husband Benny of Hayesville; one son, Clancy Shelton and wife Brinita of Murphy; one grandson, Bronson Kirby of Hayesville; one granddaughter, Fionnah Hallgren Shelton of Murphy; mother-in-law, Christine Roach of Hayesville; brother-in-law, Johnny Roach and wife Joan of the Peachtree community; sister-in-law, Gail Lands and husband Tony of Hayesville; nephew, Cordell Lands; niece, Haley Evans Jones; Aunts, Nell Norton and Wanda Shelton both of Lake Toxaway, NC; Uncle, Johnny Shelton and wife Louise of Hayesville; and many cousins and friends which he loved dearly.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 am Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the Fires Creek Baptist Church in Hayesville. Rev. Mark Laney and Rev. Dallas Crowder will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble, NC. Pallbearers will be Jason Shelton, Warren Shelton, Timmy Shelton, B.J. Shelton, Steven R. Shelton and Dexter Shelton.

Mr. Bryant Jackson, age 75, of Andrews, NC, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018, at his home. Mr. Jackson was born August 29, 1943, in Marion, NC. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of New Life Baptist Church in Hayesville, NC, enjoyed the outdoors, yard work, sitting on his porch watching the birds, and working crossword puzzles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Nichols Jackson.
He is survived by his daughter, Lynette (Butch) Hooper, and his sons, Steve (April) Jackson, and Ronnie (Heather) Jackson, brother, Fred Jackson, sisters, Nancy Hardin, Mary Beth Killian, Trudy Moss, and Kay Jackson, grandchildren, Lee Ann Wells, Noah Jackson, and Adam Jackson, and one great-grandchild, Lyn Leigh Wells.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Valley Town Cemetery with military graveside rites by Navy Honorary Guard, local veterans organizations; Murphy VFW Post 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post 96, DAV Chapter 73 and Clay County VFW Post 6812.

TEEN ARRESTED FOR MURDER

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Chief JJ Wooten of the Andrews Police Department announced the December 12th, 2018 arrest of 17 year old Jadon Luke Spivey of Andrews North Carolina for Murder.

At about 8:45 PM on December 11th, 2018 the Cherokee County E911 Communications Center received a call from an individual at a residence inside the city limits of Andrews North Carolina. According to the caller an individual had been shot at the residence. Officers with the Andrews Police Department, Deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Cherokee County Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene.

Upon arrival at the residence the initial responding officer found 27 year old Alexander Bryant in an apparent lifeless condition. Cherokee County Emergency Services personnel arrived and confirmed that Bryant was deceased.

During the investigation Investigators from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and Andrews Police Department worked together to gather information and evidence from the crime scene.

Jadon Spivey was identified as a suspect in the crime and was taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center where he is currently charged with Murder and being held under no bond.

Sheriff Palmer and Chief Wooten stated “There are a lot of questions that are being asked to help us find answers as we continue this joint investigation. We would like to thank the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Office of District Attorney Ashley Welch for their valuable assistance and advice during this very difficult time for all concerned. Because of the nature of the crime we do not anticipate any further information being released from our offices.”

Lucille Cross Abernathy

April 8, 1957 – November 22, 2018

Mrs. Lucille Cross Abernathy passed away Thursday, November 22, 2018 at her home. Lucille was a lifelong resident of Clay County and a member of Martin Hill Baptist Church. She was a loving wife and mother who was always ready to help others. She was an excellent cook and loved caring for her family. She also was an animal lover, especially her dogs.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, William Thomas Cross and Pearl Garrett Cross and her sister, Helen Maney.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Abernathy of Hayesville; son, William Craig Nicholson of Cartersville, GA; daughter, Subrina Abernathy of Hiawassee, GA; Sister, Bertha McCray of Hayesville, NC; sister, Shirley Clemons of Murphy, NC; brother, Terry Cross of Hayesville; sister, Mayme Cross of Hayesville; brother, Jessie Cross of Alpharetta, GA; brother, Ted Cross of Hayesville; and Michael Anthony Cross of Hayesville.

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy with Rev. Aud Brown officiating. Music will be provided by Teresa Gay and bagpipes will be played by Stephen Thrasher. The family will meet with friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home before the service begins.

Flowers are gratefully accepted by the family, however, if you wish, the family suggests that donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.

Harold Howard, age 70 of Murphy, NC passed away Monday, January 28, 2019 at his residence.

He was a native of the Western NC Mountains, spent his early childhood in the area of Bryson City. As a young boy his parents, Grady and Gracie Howard, relocated to the Hiwassee Dam area of Cherokee County in order for his father to continue to work with the TVA. He and his family enjoyed music and spent time singing and playing together. Harold taught himself how to play the guitar, and did so from childhood until his cancer became too much for he and his wife Doris of 11 years to travel around the area singing. Playing at churches, community centers, homeless shelters and nursing homes were part of his passion. Harold attended Moccasin Creek Baptist Church.

Harold had many jobs and trades throughout his life. After returning from a two year service with the Army in the late 1960s, he created a life for himself and his family doing things such as carpentry, masonry, driving long haul trucks and mining, operating heavy equipment, and finally retiring as a landscape specialist in the herbicide and pesticide department of NCDOT, where he worked 26 years. Harold had many hobbies and loves during his life. Mainly fishing, singing and playing his guitar with his family and friends. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and even had a race car on the Tri-County dirt track around the time of 1990. Harold liked horseback riding for many years and rode in the wagon train on occasion.

Harold leaves behind a very large extended family that he enjoyed seeing and visiting. He would usually attend family reunion gatherings twice a year, one in Bryson City, NC in June and the other in Canton, Ohio in September.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Dennis, Bill and Grady Howard, Jr.

He also had a close immediate family including his wife Doris Burrell Howard; daughter, April Howard Hines (Steve), son, Josh Howard (Stephanie Blue) and daughter, Amber Howard Patterson (Robert); grandchildren, Brittany Morrow Barbour (Brandon), Drew Morrow, Lynnex Patterson and Case Patterson; great-granddaughter, Notla Barbour and great-grandsons, Clayton Barbour, Noah and Caleb Broome; step-daughter, Pamela Sneed Payne (Dexter) and step-son, Daniel Sneed (Becky); step-grandchildren, Dakota Sneed, Seth Sneed, Gage Sneed, Justice McKay, Jarrett Sneed and Aerian McKay; brothers, Wayne Payne (Mary), Wade Howard (Linda), RL Howard (Debbie), Doug Howard (Shirley); and sister, Betty Roberson (James).

Harold was well known by the entire county and communities. He will be truly missed, but his family and friends rest in the fact that he is singing, playing and fishing in heaven with no more pain, heartache or worry in the presence of our Lord.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Friday, February 1, 2019 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Doug Howard and Rev. Chip Siller will officiate. Burial will be in the Laurel Branch Cemetery in Bryson City, NC. Pallbearers will be Steve Hines, Robert Patterson, Drew Morrow, Brandon Barbour, Daniel Sneed and David Toney. Honorary pallbearers will be Mush Davis, Tom Anderson, Sam Cole, Danny Sneed, Chip Siller, Mitchell Prince and Ronnie Ware.

Joan Paulette White, age 71 of Murphy, NC passed away Monday, January 21, 2019 at her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late Edward William and Nellie Moore McAfee. Joan was a supervisor for McAfee Election Services. She was a member of Little Brasstown Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, John Edward McAfee.

She is survived by her husband, Charles White; one daughter, Sonia Lovingood and husband Al of Murphy; one son, Bryan White and wife Pam of Murphy; four grandchildren, Danielle Williams and husband Timmy, Zack Lovingood and fiance Hayden Verner, Kelci Coker and husband Justin and Jordan Lovingood all of Murphy; three great-grandchildren, Aayden and Connor Williams and Hawkins Coker; one brother, Sam McAfee of Thonotosassa, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, January 24, 2018 at Little Brasstown Baptist Church. Rev. Aud Brown will officiate. Burial will be held in the Sunset Cemetery.

Mary Lou Mills Chambers, age 92, of Cornelia, GA and formerly of Murphy passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at Fannin Regional Hospital.

She was a native of Cherokee County, NC and the daughter of the late Dewey and Hattie Killian Mills. She was retired from Johnson and Johnson as a quality assurance controller.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth Mills and Claude Mills; sisters, Ruby Sims and Edith Mills.

She is survived by her husband, Irvin J. Chambers; nieces, Phoebe Hedden, Margaret Hurlburt, Amy Hughes, Helen Hamilton, Shirley Robinson and nephew, Vinson Sims; and many great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 4, 2019 at 12 pm at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Dr. Eddis Dockery will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Judith “Judy” Ann Crisp, age 76 of Hayesville, NC passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at her residence.

She was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Francis and Mabel Campbell. Judy moved to Hayesville in 1969 from Chicago, Illinois. She was a Cub Scout Leader and President of T-Ball in the 1970’s. Judy was an EMT, family caregiver and a caregiver to the elderly. She worked for Mountain Home Health; she made many friends. Judy was a member of Little Brasstown Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harris Gene Crisp; two brothers, Frank and Joe Campbell; and one sister, Kathryn Davis.

She is survived by three sons, Daniel Crisp, David Crisp and wife Pam and Douglas Crisp and wife Becky; adopted daughter, Tammy Henson; one sister, Nancy Fugiel of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren, Elora Skye Crisp, Jacob Liam Crisp, Joshua Silvers and Blake Mosteller; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Grace Baptist Church in Hayesville. Rev. Aud Brown and Rev. Wayne Matheson will officiate. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Jack Killian, age 79 of Murphy, passed away Monday, December 10, 2018 at Murphy Rehab and Nursing.

Jack was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC. He was a son of the late Stella Ashe Taylor and Lonnie Killian. Jack was a manager of American General Finance Company. He loved racing cars and playing golf.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, David Killian.

Surviving are his daughter, Kathy Killian; one brother, Bud Killian of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Jake and Karlee London, Cody, Cory, Gage and Noah Killian and dear friend, Becky Killian. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, December 13, 2018 Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Pastor Harold Stiles will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeff Ledford, Mike Townson, Terry Stiles, Jacky Jones, Danny Rich and Mike Hogsed.
