He was a native of Jackson County, NC and the son of the late Walter Lee and Ophia Louise McLaughin Roper. He was a member of Valleytown Baptist Church and a past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Andrews, NC. He loved spending time with his family and the Andrews Senior Center.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother R.L. Roper; and sisters, Joyce Pauline Cook, Mary June Smith and Bernice Ramsey.
He is survived by his wife, of 35 years, Maybell Dockery Roper; two sons, Dr. Gary Wayne Roper and wife, Dawn of Andrews, NC and Alan Roy Roper and wife Susan of Sevierville, TN; sisters Barbara Creasman of Andrews, NC, Velva Bateman and Pamela Bryson both of the Nantahala Community; grandchildren, Wayne, Walker and Emily Roper and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at Valleytown Baptist Church in Andrews. Rev. Eric Byrd and Rev. Joel Creasman will officiate. Music will be provided by Cindy Davis and the church choir. Burial will be in the Aquone Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Doug Hampton, Chuck Davis, David Cook, Scott Ramsey, Nick Bryson, Brian Creasman, Steven Hampton and Ray Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Masonic Lodge #529 in Andrews, NC.

He is survived by his parents, Erica Locust and Jordan Elkins as well as 5 siblings; Serenity, Benson and Wylder Elkins, Damiah and Kohen Locust; his maternal grandparents, Margo And Ken Locust and Maria Flores and Daryl Colon; paternal grandparents, Misty Murrin and Jason Elkins; great grandmother, Clydine Rodgers; Aunts, Bethany Locust, Brianna Elkins, Alyssa Messer; and Uncles, Jermiah And Damien Raymond and Emmanuel Locust.
Baby Elliot was only with us for a short 13 hours, but he proved such strength and courage and accomplished so much during his time here.

Jessie Mae Martin, age 98 of Candler, NC passed away Thursday January 24, 2019.
She was a native of Clay County and the daughter of the late Benjamin and Elizabeth Passmore Martin. Jessie worked for Gerber as an inspector. She was a simple, hardworking, single Mom who loved her son and family. She loved animals, the outdoors and enjoyed sitting in the sunshine. Jessie was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed attending Sweetwater Methodist Church in Hayesville.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Harrison, Vernon, Guy and Neal Martin and sisters, Frankie Campbell, Lucy and Willie Martin.
She is survived by her son, Danny Martin and wife Joyce of Candler, NC; granddaughter, Christie Martin (James Parlato) of FL; step-grandson, Rob Heaton of Arden; great-grandchildren, Aydyn, Axelle and Amity; step-great-grandchildren, Cody, Tyler and Cayden and several cousins and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Hayesville. Rev. Jackie Sellers will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny, Edwin, Ronnie and Ben Martin, Brad Bandiver, Rob Heaton and Freddie Henson. Burial will be in Sweetwater Methodist Church Cemetery.

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the December 19th, 2018 arrest of 21 year old John Mckinley Hogan of Marble North Carolina for thefts.
During the early morning hours of December 19th, 2018 the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint that the fenced in area of a local business had been entered and a military type fuel truck had been stolen along with damaging the fence.
As deputies of the Patrol and Investigations Division were continuing the investigation additional information was made known of a four wheeler that had been stolen some distance from the original breaking and entering. Additionally, information was made know to the deputies that Hogan had previously been suspect into other thefts.
The Patrol Deputy went to the area where Hogan lived. Upon spotting the deputy Hogan gave a short chase before being arrested by the deputy.
During the investigation the truck and the four wheeler have been recovered.
John Mckinley Hogan was charged with 2 counts LARCENY OF MOTOR VEHICLE, RESISTING PUBLIC OFFICER, 2 counts INJURY TO REAL PROPERTY, FIRST DEGREE TRESPASS, FAILURE TO APPEAR ON MISDEMEANOR. Hogan is currently being held in the Cherokee County Detention Center under a $26,500.00 secure bond.
Sheriff Palmer stated “Excellent team work between Investigations and Patrol in clearing this case so quickly.”

She was a native of Jefferson County, IL and the daughter of the late Harold and Edna Alexander Miller. Patricia was a hair dresser. She was a member of the Cornerstone Community Church. She was a strong christian lady, loved her family and church family.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Betty Jane Martin.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Anderson of Robbinsville, NC; grandchildren, Melissa Blevins and David Blevins; great grandson, Hudson Blevins.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the Cornerstone Community Church, 253 Robbins Road, Andrews, NC 28901. Pastor Marcus Larey will officiate.

Meshele “Missy” Ann Ladd: Obituary

She was born in Roanoke, VA to the late Glenn “Bob” and Wesena Ladd. Missy was a graduate of Rutledge High School in 1985; she was most popular in high school; and graduated from Tusculum University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business. Missy attended Hyatts Creek Baptist Church; she loved the Lord and going to church was a very important part of her life. She enjoyed singing solos. Missy enjoyed giving to people at the church at all holidays; she would have a little present for her church family on the pews as they came in. She recently enjoyed attending some services at Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church. Missy has many nieces and nephews that she loved. She enjoyed her four fur babies.
She is survived by her brothers, Jeffery Ladd, Alan Ladd, Tony Ladd, Mark Flippin, Thomas Flippin and David Flippin and special friends, Ruth and the late Rev. Parker Burgess and their son Joshua who loved Missy unconditionally.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Rev. LB Adams will officiate. Music will be provided by Mike Moore. Burial will be in the Valleytown Cemetery where she will be laid to rest by her parents.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the son of the late William and Millie Rider Phillips. Don was a superintendent for building apartments.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sons, Scott Sewell and Jeremy Phillips; brothers, Mack, James and Jr. Phillips; sisters, Juanita Gibson, Mary Haygood, Ida Mae Ratcliff and Eunice Phillips.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Phillips; one son, David Phillips; five daughters, Shaye Duvall, Stacy Wayne, Heather Gibb, Haven Phillips and Jamie Graves; one sister, Wanda Murphy; sister-in-law, Frankie Mae Phillips; 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Harold Clayton; son, Bobby Clayton and daughter, Charlene Henderson.
She is survived by four grandchildren, Danny and Barry Clayton, Dwayne and Jessica Henderson and their families; one daughter-in-law, Sandy Ashe; a very special nephew, Jason Mann; brother, Walter Stiles; four sisters, Stella Mann, Jeanette Ray, Geraldine Wray and Rosa Mae Green and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Richard was born on July 6, 1955 in Andrews, NC and the son of the late Rev. Ralph Dee and Juanita Hicks Postell. He was a loving and caring son, husband, father, brother and friend. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by brothers Morris Postell, Norris Postell and Mike Postell and a sister, Marilyn Amos.
Richard was a member and deacon of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Murphy, NC. He had previously served as deacon at Ranger Baptist Church. Richard had a true servant heart. He constantly looked for ways to help other people and would give you the shirt off his back. He was affectionately known as the “Candy Man” because he gave away candy everywhere he went. He was a hardworking man who spent his life doing mostly telephone construction. He had been owner/operator of Postell Telephone Construction until retiring in 2008. He loved working with his hands and could do just about anything. He also loved hunting, fishing and riding his Harley.
Survivors include: mother, Juanita Hicks Postell of Andrews, NC; wife of 45 years, Evelyn Potts Postell; son, Travis Richard Postell; sisters, Barbara Baine (Wayne) of Murphy and Rebecca Campbell (Vader) of Robbinsville, NC; brothers, Alan Postell (Rosalee) and Jim Postell (Cyndi) of Andrews, NC; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at the Red Marble Baptist Church in Andrews. Rev. Gerald Derreberry and Rev. Zach Orton will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews and great-nephews.

Obituaries December 27, 2018Mary Pendergrass Hartness Wright, age 91, of Murphy went to be with Jesus on Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at Murphy Rehab and Nursing.
She was the daughter of the late Floyd Pendergrass and Mary W. Pendergrass. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Vernie Long Hartness, Jr. and second husband, Tom Wright; brothers; Howard (Pete) Pendergrass, Hubert Pendergrass and Charles Pendergrass and her sister, Martha Julia Pendergrass.
Mary was a homemaker and a member of Snow Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by her three children, Tex Hartness and wife Cheryl, Louise Gunter and Mike Hartness of the home; five grandchildren, Tiffany Hickson, Trisha Hartness, Jeremy Gunter, Tia Ayers and Joe Gunter and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the Aquone Cemetery in the Nantahala community.

Murphy, NC— Sheriff Derrick announced the December 19th, 2018 arrest of 39 year old Nathon Wesley Barnett of Murphy North Carolina on charges alleging he assaulted a man with a firearm.
Shortly before 9pm, December 19th, 2018 the Cherokee County Emergency Communications Center received a call stating a person had been shot and was in need of emergency assistance. As deputies were responding to the scene additional information was being provided by the caller who later was identified as the victim, 34 year old Jared Hawkins, that Barnett had shot him in the head. First responders and Life Force Air Ambulance staged and awaited the arrival of law enforcement.
Upon arriving to the scene deputies made entry into the residence and located the victim and the assailant. Nathon Wesley Barnett was detained and subsequently arrested and taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center for the assault of Hawkins.
Jared Hawkins was airlifted by Life Force to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga TN where he remains in stable condition at the time of this release.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation in processing the crime scene.
Nathon Wesley Barnett is currently incarcerated in the Cherokee Detention Center for Assault With A Deadly Weapon With Intent To Kill Inflicting Serious Injury and has a $150,000.00 secure bond. Barnett is expected to be in the Cherokee County District Court on January 03rd, 2019 at 9 am.
Sheriff Palmer stated “We appreciate the assistance of our local first responders who provide invaluable assistance in these situations. We are glad to be able to partner with the North Carolina SBI who are a super resource in these cases. Our prayers go out to both families during this time. There are many questions that still have to be answered as we continue our investigation.”

Alvin “Cider” Alden Adams: Obituary

He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the son of the late Alnie Alvin and WillaBelle Birchfield Adams. Cider was a consultant for Adams Construction and he was retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a Master Mason in Andrews Masonic Lodge #529; he was also involved in the Oasis Shriners. Cider was a member of the Valleytown Rural Fire Department and Andrews Rescue Squad for 30 years and refereed for the NC High School Athletic Association for over 30 years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and golfing. Cider adored his children and grandchildren. He was a member of Andrews First Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his grandsons Will Adams and Andy Adams, twin sisters, Martha and Margaret Adams and brother, Charles David Adams.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Lee Guffey Adams; two sons, Tim Adams and wife Wendy of Andrews, NC; Anthony “Tony” and wife Kelly of Conover, NC and one daughter, Angel Adams Massey and husband Jake of Sarasota, FL; brother, Stanley Adams and wife Kae of Andrews, NC; grandchildren, Lillian Massey, Ellie Belle Adams, T.J. Massey; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
